Three Free Patterns, Orange in the Garden and in Reds, Pigeon's Rare Visit

Day lilies are all in bloom. So many striking colours it's hard to choose one to show you. But this orange is so bright it's like a blinding orange is what I'm calling it. Reminiscent of the poppies I shared last month.
Here is a visitor we had for one day last week. Have never seen a Rock Dove (Pigeon) here before. It was of interest to see he was sporting bands on both legs and they were different. Wouldn't it be interesting to know this fellow's history!
Ned enjoyed keeping a close eye on him.

LeeAnna's at Not Afraid of Color prompt this week was to name a food we especially enjoy in the summer time. I do love all the summer fruits and this one immediately came to my mind. Fresh cherries. When they become available I eat quite a few.  Below is my goat cheese with red chili jelly topping on rye bread little lunch. Do you share my love of cherries?

And do you have an Idea Notebook?  I've mentioned before I love notebooks and always have one at hand to jot down things/ideas/writing, etc. to remember.  I haven't cottoned on to doing that on my computer though I do use my phone to take pictures of things I want noted.

This week I took a little break from the dogs each day while Hubby kept an eye on them. That gave me a chance to spend some time at the machine and finish a number of these four patch blocks for the redworked Flight of Fancy project.  The colours are very warm and give me a cosy and good feeling whenever I'm in the room. I did a little research and found out that the warm reds are the ones biased towards orange. So that is a thing and these must be warm reds. Someone asked so I'm going to see if I can get some close up photos of the embroideries.

Thursday's Three Free

Becky Goldsmith and the crew at Piece O' Cake have put together a  group of very cute free e patterns found at that link.  For instance, there you will find the pattern for the Tisket Tasket Basket that a lot of folks are making and also the wonderful Searching for Beauty project.  In the video below, Becky chats about background fabrics. Speaking of backgrounds, that is a gorgeous winter/Christmas quilt behind her.

All People Quilt I was struck by a particular quilt designed by Avis Shirer.  A simple fruit outline to applique using pretty spring/summery fabrics. You'll find the pear pattern and tutorial there at that link.

I Love Quilting Forever has this gorgeous free pattern, Abundance
And here is the link to their Free pattern cache to explore.

And for my embroidering friends, generous Amina at Stitch Floral has many free patterns to download. At that link you will find three patterns for pretty potted plants.

I've made note of her Tulip pattern.

I thank you all for your visit here today and I hope you found something that will encourage you to visit me again.

  1. what a pretty dove. I don't think I have ever seen one that had a band on it. Cherries are ok, but I'm not a fan of a tiny fruit that I have to remove pits or seeds from - like I eat grapes but I chose seedless. I think all of our day lilies quit about 2 weeks ago

  2. Summer is wonderful with all the wonderful fresh fruits! I'm tied between apricots and peaches for my favorite summer fruits. Neither one lasts that long. There is nothing like a fresh peach to snack on. Those things that are shipped into grocery stores are pathetic! I buy my fruit at one of the many produce stands in my area. Thanks for the free pattern links, I'm off to check them out now. Happy stitching!

  3. I have a love of cherries! Right now I have a bowl of pits soaking to clean to make a pit pack for booboos. I keep them in the freezer for injuries.

Ned... so quietly watching. Not flinging himself against the window. We have way, WAY too many pigeons/doves here. messy guys! Not easily startled either. I wonder what this one is doing with those bands... did it escape the work life? Yea!

I wonder if one can somehow find out, by some tech method to read the bands. I wonder what the other doves think of him, with his goth jewelry on.

  4. Your Flight of Fance project looks charming! I love all the assorted reds. But it's your quail I adore! Did you stitch him? Thanks for sharing the freebies! :)

  5. Hi Jocelyn,
I like your header, do you make them yourself? Your Day Lilies are gorgeous! I have some pretty red and yellow ones. No Pigeons, but lots of sparrows, black birds, Robins and once in a while I see a humming bird flying around. They really like the the Lillie's lots. I have several notebooks I keep my ongoing quilt project info. I also have one for my embroidery and crochet projects. I like you Flight of Fancy quilt, very pretty. Thanks for sharing all the free patterns...I've already went and took a peek. I'll be going back later to get the patterns. Your scrappy pyramids are looking good. Have a great day!

  6. Love your orange day lily - such a happy vibrant colour! Apricots, I love apricots.....apricot jam, fresh apricots, any way they come.

  7. I LOVE fresh cherries, and certainly eat my share in the short summer season. Luckily Robin is not so keen on them, so I have those luscious cherries all to myself.
Thanks for the weekly links you provide, it's always nice to check up on these things.

  8. Our day lilies are pretty much done. So nice that I wish they would last a bit longer.

Thanks for the free embroidery patterns. I have bookmarked them and am thinking on plans on how I could use them... Napkins perhaps.

    God bless.

  9. I love cherries, but I am a cherry snob. I don't like the ones from Michigan I love the Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia bing cherries. I love day lilies I think is that hot bright orange which brings a smile.

  11. I love cherries! Haven't had any in awhile - I should look for some the next time I'm at the grocery store. The 4 patches are pretty around your Flight of Flight are so pretty! Oranges and reds also give me a cozy feeling. I'm enjoying orange as the RSC color of the month!

  12. Beautiful day lily, I do love them. I also love cherries, the larger and darker the better! I have tried zooming in on your picture to read the numbers on your pigeons band, I think the left hand one might read 1922 or 1822. Anyway, you should be able to find a birdwatchers website where you can find out about your pigeon if you can read the numbers - well at least we can for birds rung in the UK! xx

  13. Your day lily is gorgeous! My day lillies grew very well this year but they didn't last long this year. I don't keep an idea journal, but I may start one. I download ideas to my computer but then they get lost in the shuffle. I do keep a crafting journal. I got the idea from a blog post a couple years ago and have been keeping it for the last two years. I do enjoy paging through and seeing the progress I've made. Mostly crocheting and quilting. But I want to try embroydery and knitting.

  15. Lovely post, Jocelyn. Pigeons are a nuisance here. But yours is pretty. We have lots of Eurasian Doves. I like their “coo”!
Yes, I keep notebooks too. I tend to forget where I jotted down a specific pattern or idea. So sometimes it’s a puzzle to find it again. I think it’s my aged brain! Yours is lovely! I’m really interested in your red chili jelly! Do you make it yourself? Looks and sounds yummy! Now I’m off to check out the pattern links!

  16. We had a racing pigeon like that land in our yard, parked under the thistle feeder. We were concerned enough we captured it and contacted the guild based on the bands. Cherries! They're always a nice treat.

  17. Good morning Jocelyn! It’s always a pleasure to begin my day with your blog. Cherries are my favorite fruit and I gobble them up all summer. I keep idea books in a drawer beside my living room chair and by my sewing machine and jot down quotes, ideas for blog posts, quilt ideas, “to do” lists, books to read, etc. The warm colors - reds and golds - in your Flight of Fancy blocks are my favorites. The way Beckie G. Is using backgrounds in that video is much like the way I’m varying backgrounds in my basket blocks and adds so much more visual interest than just the plain muslin. Hope you have a great weekend!

  18. I always gets sidetracked by all the lovely free patterns you direct us too! I love your flight of fancy quilt! So pretty and such a happy warm quilt! The embroidery is beautiful! Can't believe Ned didn't go for the bird. Scout's very used to doves and pigeions here, she doesn't even try! Have a lovely weekend and as always, thank you for the inspiration!

  19. What a gorgeous day lily! My dad loved cherries! He would always look forward to that time in the summer when they'd be available. Love those free patterns! Love the Flight of Fancy project. The colors are so vibrant! It's so interesting to see the bands on the dove.

  20. I love fresh cherries - had some from Washington that were on sale at the store a few weeks ago, and I just ate and ate. I don't mind the pits. I also love canned tart cherries for pie, but that's another story!
Those bands on the dove look quite interesting. I love doves and welcome them with our feeder, but haven't seen any this summer.
I used to have an idea notebook but got out of practice. Yours is the third reminder/nudge I've seen this week to start it up again.
    Love the warm reds!

  21. I always have a notepad close by, if I don't jot down the ideas as they happen I just might forget them later :) My orange daylilies are all finished, the garden is so dry due to lack of rain.

  22. We have a pair of mourning doves that frequent our feeder. Never seen a rock dove- so pretty! Thank you for the great list of free patterns.

  23. I love fresh cherries too! When I was a kid, we had cherry pit spitting contests on the Fourth of July. I could never get my seeds as far as my cousins could though! I also like pepper jelly very much! The gradations in the orange lily are beautiful! Your redwork project is progressing so nicely!

  26. I'm on my second bag of cherries... and I think I am the only one in the house eating them! So yummy. What a sight that pigeon is. Love the colors. The only day lilies I have are yellow. I miss the orange ones I had when I lived up north. Enjoy your week.

  31. It's nice to meet you. I am so sorry to be late visiting. I'd like to explain. I spent all of Friday getting things finished and ready for my neighborhood cleanup. Then I worked the cleanup from 7:30 am to 2 pm, at which point I got very sick and spent most of the weekend sick. Between the chills and the sweating, I was sick to my stomach. Hope you understand.

Your day lilies are beautiful. So much more colorful than mine.

That's a pretty dove. Had no idea they could be double banded.

I love fresh cherries, too. They are usually gone by now because they produce their best fruit in spring.

Yes, warm reds are in the orange family and cool reds are in the blue family. That's why having a good full spectrum light is sometimes your best friend.

I hope you had a great weekend and will join us at Annie's in the future.

  32. We have a neighbor who has a pigeon coop. I am not a big fan of these birds. We have had to stop using our bird feeder, because they edge out all of the other birds. I love your bright orange lily. My favorite summertime food is watermelon. I do like cherries though. I have a big bag of them in my fridge right now. Have a great week!

  33. I am adding cherries to the grocery list. If Paul goes grocery shopping, he will return with a fried chicken, even when it wasn't on the list. "It was on sale", he responds. "Was broccoli on sale", I ask, which is what jumps into my cart :-D
Love the warmth of reds and oranges. They also remind me of fall. I am ready for fall. Have a fun rest of the week.

  34. We definitely love cherries here, so that lunch looks tasty to me! I'd love to know where that rock pigeon has been, and where he/she is going!

My favourite thing about having a blog is hearing from you. I appreciate it so much and I will definitely check out your blog too. Thanks!
