Quilting and Cross Stitch Projects, Thrift Find and Bonita's Raisin Buns

It is always a treat to open the kitchen curtain in the morning. I never know what I might see. One morning recently -back when the sun was shining- this fellow was sleeping in the driveway. I watched him idly glance about, yawn and tuck his head back down for a few more zees. I wondered how long he'd been there; overnight would be unlikely as I know foxes have dens. I'm always surprised by how long and thin their snouts are and their bodies too. And what colour! Note: taken from a great distance and this is not the first time a fox has chosen the big garage driveway for a nap.

This week's treat with a cup of tea...Bonita's Kitchen Raisin Tea Buns
Two things... #1, I didn't brush them with egg or milk and they were very pale on top but golden on the bottom. If I could just serve them upside down...
#2, I used the amount of sugar as called for in the recipe and these were too sweet for me. But you know who loved them. I will use this recipe again but I will cut the sugar by a third.

That plate is a thrift find. I love it when I spy pink plates which are rare and especially ones with the pretty dense double edge of leaves like this one had. Unique. It is Mason's "Vista" featuring a typical English scene. And what shade would you call that deep red?

I haven't yet shared my hand stitching on this colourful quilt below. This is the scrappy blocks project I'd layered and readied for quilting back in ???
I decided to use a star design for the middle of each of the black blocks. I cut out a cardboard template and used my erasable pencil to outline a wonky star.
I used different colours of Perle cotton to outline each one.
Though I have the stars all stitched now, I quickly realized summer time is maybe not the best time to be working on a quilt in your lap. But I do hope to add more quilting lines outlining the blocks and finish it this summer to have as my very own lap quilt for the fall.

It was too wet to do much in the garden work or sit outside stitching this weekend but the best excuse ever to sit and stitch inside.
In particular, enjoyable cross stitching moved along my Pileated Woodpecker. I had a stitchy dilemma about that grey. Somehow the called for DMC 646 had been swapped for a Simply Shaker Aged Pewter. Because it wasn't quite as dark grey as the photo showed, I worried about it. As more stitches got laid I realized it shades darker depending how you look at it. It is more closely resembling the picture than can be seen here so I'm okay with it.
I have had to dress like a mariner to venture outside. Rainfall warnings every single day. Huge downpours, the kind that bring down weak branches and bend over my tall plants. Photos of the mariner and her brown dog next time.
Hope there is something sweet and wonderful in your week!

  1. Your fox, what a lovely sight. and the plate, without resorting to Google, I would call it Magenta. The threads look beautiful, and hopefully the weather plays nicely for your plants, gentle rain is so good, that heavy downpour can wreck tall stems so quickly.

  2. That fox is beautiful, Jocelyn! I'm surprised he would be relaxed and sleeping right out in the open like that. You have me craving something baked, and a pretty plate to put it on,too! I always admire what you find at thrift shop. I have a soup tureen that was my grandmother's that has the pink/red designs on it. I have to admit I don't ever get it out and use it, but maybe I should! The scrappy blocks quilt is really pretty - stars are the perfect thing to quilt in those bigger squares. Glad you're making progress on the woodpecker, too!

  3. so cool to see a fox - in all the time we have been here I have only seen one run through the yard - I see more when we travel out west. Love that plate and the tea buns. They are more what we call biscuits here - same things different names! I always like them fresh with butter and sometimes jam - I don't like them next day they always seem to dry unless you pop them in the microwave.

  4. What a wonderful treat to see the fox and get a photo of it. She is a beauty. The tea buns look so yummy and I love the transferware plate- what a great find. Your quilt is looking amazing. Love the star quilting design. I have been working on my strawberry quilt. Like you said it gets hot to work on hand quilting , but it is so relaxing. Your woodpecker stitch is looking fabulous, Jocelyn. Have a lovely week. Hugs.

  6. What a lovely photo of the fox, we usually only see them running through a field, never close enough to zoom in for a picture.

Those stars are awesome in the quilt. Your stitching is getting pretty close to being completed.

    God bless.

  7. I was away the end of last week and kept watching our weather since rain was predicted every day, including the possibility of severe storms. I returned home late yesterday and discovered there wasn't a drop of water in the rain gauge. Fortunately a neighbor was watering the hanging baskets on the porch and the potted plants on the deck. That heat was too much.
I think the substitute gray thread will be fine. After all, no one will have the pattern to compare, so they'll never know you made a switch. Sometimes we get too hung up on following a pattern.
I hope you are drying out by now. Interesting that the fox was snoozing right out in the open. I see fox occasionally, but never up close and personal.

  8. Neat fox. Yup - I've had buns/scones come out paler on top than the bottom for the same reason. Those stars are really cool!

  9. The stars look amazing - I love them! Your kitchen buns seem like a cross between a Welsh griddle cake and a scone, yum. Great fox picture. xx

  10. Beautiful fox! We had a couple of foxes running through our neighbourhood last year…we saw them when we were out for a walk. Your woodpecker is looking more realistic all the time! Lots of downpours here recently too. I prefer a gentle rain that lasts a little longer. The stars are perfect for the black squares in your scrappy quilt. Have a good week. Gail at the Cozy Quilter

  12. Bet I'd love those biscuits! Boy, do I have a sweet tooth! Lol! We used to get foxes in our backyard with the woods. Haven't seen any in a long time. The neighbor who used to let her dogs out in the woods has moved so I'm hoping the foxes return one day. Their kits were so adorable romping down our hill! Good idea to put the quilt up during the heat of summer. It'll be a great companion once the cooler weather returns.

  13. Awww that little fox looks so sweet. Your tea buns look delicious - are they scone-ish? I love vintage plates with that type of pattern. If you thrifted it, you got a good deal! Your star quilt is beautiful! The hand stitching is just so cute, especially with the different thread colors. LOL on dressing like a mariner! :D

  16. I love seeing that fox relaxing in your driveway. The plate you found is so pretty. You find the best stuff when you go thrifting. The woodpecker is coming along nicely. The colors look great. I love the star you're quilting on your quilt. Great choice!

  17. What a beautiful fox :-)) We have a hedgehog in the garden :-))
It's always nice to have visitors :-))))
Your tea rolls look good, I usually use less sugar when baking - and it tastes much better... especially since I like to sweeten with honey or jam... you know, the newly cooked strawberry jam.
Your quilted stars are beautiful. When I see these little squares, I know - I don't have enough choice of fabric for my work. It looks so good.
Just like your embroidery... a hug for you.
I wish you a lot of fun. Viola

  21. Your fox is beautiful - lucky you to get a great photo. And your pileated is coming along beautifully too. We have them here but I have yet to see one. We often hear them but they manage to hide themselves quite well.

  22. Your hands have been so busy doing a variety of things. Love the plate and loved reading about how rare they are.

  23. Wow, a fox and in your driveway! Surprised he chilled for so long. Thanks for the recipe link, I really want to try that one. Nice hand quilting, that looks like it's going to be a comfy quilt! As a relatively newbie CS-er (2 yrs), I often find it challenging to navigate the difference between a pattern picture and the "called for" threads. I've changed some and like you found some affected by what light you view them in or how I feel about it once everything has been stitched in. Always afraid I'll put in a lot of work only and then feel like it needs to be ripped and re-done if I don't like it.

  24. Great picture of the fox. You are lucky to even see one as they are very timid usually. The plate is amazing. Mmm, I would call it Raspberry Red from what I get on my monitor. Love your quilt with its dancing stars. Great scrap buster too. Your cross-stitch project is coming along beautifully. Enjoy! ;^)

  25. The fox is a beaut. We see them here, from time to time, but they look a bit more scraggly than yours. I like your quilt and cross stitch. I have been thinking about trying to cross stitch. Yours looks wonderful. Thank you for linking up and stay dry!

  26. Such a great photo of the fox, and I do remember your stars quilt! Doing the stars with different colors is a great idea and sure fits the scrappy theme. I would call that red deep cranberry! Your woodpecker is really coming along, and I agree about the “snow” being too light.

  27. I adore the big stitching you are doing on the Star quilt but I can see how it might just be too hot right now to be working on it. Luckily you have that lovely woodpecker cross stitch! Love that designer. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.
