September Sewing, Sites To Visit, Tasty Stew Too

From CoziNest Vintage Collective who enjoys whimsy as much as I do and Michele at 3P&N. I must admit I can't get my head around the fact that it is past the middle of September. The days are flying now and there doesn't seem to be enough time in the day to get all the things done that I want to.

This is the first rabbit I've seen in quite a while here and it is also the biggest.

This pretty flower below is a wild Allium, perhaps Wild Leek. If you can confirm, I'd appreciate it.
I've been watching the wonderful Susan Standley, Stitch In Time, on Youtube. She has been providing tutorials on how to hand stitch a four piece block the exact way they would have done so in the 1840's with what would have been available at the time. I enjoyed seeing how she handled beginning and ending stitching, in particular. You can follow her detailed, wonderful tutorials/SAL to create a doll quilt/table mat.
I finished all the hand quilting lines on Tony's bureau mat. Here it is with his family photos- he was an only child. Himself as a baby there and others with his mom and dad. These fabric prints really suit the time of these pictures.
What a big move it was for them to emigrate to Canada from England. His story makes me think how we are all travelers in our way. We all have a story to tell of other places.
I chose a backing fabric for the Propeller quilt from my stash...I think it matches the happy, colourful vibe of the blocks.

I have no idea what batting that is but I prefer thin so I can hand stitch through it easily. I have this sandwiched now and will start laying stitches soon. I'd love to get this finished before starting the autumn project I have in mind. The first of which will include a turkey, I think...stay tuned.

I came across this easy recipe for a chicken and beans stew. I've never used cannellini beans (though I love saying that name) in my life and couldn't find them at the store. So I used pinto beans and lentils. And I liked the addition of a little cinnamon and cumin.( I've been using cumin more for it's health benefits). All you need for two is one chicken breast. And it's one of those recipes you could throw in extras like peppers, etc. I added a few aging cherry tomatoes and spinach too. The recipe is still up HERE at Lillian's Cupboard, a site I adored. Lillian passed away in 2018 at age 86 and I miss her. I am so happy her family decided to keep her blog online.

Thank you all for the concern about Tony and asking how he's doing these days. All the testing has not turned up anything to worry about which is still frustrating for him. However, he is finally accepting there is nothing "wrong" as such and is definitely more at ease with this new version of himself...he would joke he's just stopped complaining about it. This version, though with physical limits and things he can't do, has a great mind still and can still find enjoyment in lots of things. So be it!

Hope your week is going well and your stitching fingers are flying!

  2. Tony's bureau topper is beautiful, Jocelyn! It definitely does fit those photos perfectly. I love the dog figurines, too. Did he have a dalmatian at one time? We did - and I bought a dalmatian figurine for us, too. Love the backing for the propeller top - enjoy that quilting!

  4. it is frustrating when you feel something is wrong with your health but the doctor can find nothing wrong. Yes at his age I guess just live with what you have and try to function as well as you can. It is hard to believe it is the middle of September already - the years fly by the older we get I have found.

  5. Photos, frames and a dresser topper, perfect. 1940, that was a vintage year for those of us aged 85 now !!!! I guess I am fortunate that our Dr has sorted out meds for both of us, slowing down is quite okay now, even if not one of us is happy about not having the energy or staying power to do what we did just a few years ago. 6. The bureau mat turned out great. I love the way you have it displayed. The backing you have picked out is delightful. It will be fun to quilt. We are all travelers. . . our last move was only 5 hours away but it was a big jump from small town to big city and all the hustle and bustle that goes with it. I'm not sorry we moved because we are closer to our children but I miss the slower lifestyle.

  7. You've done a great job with Tony's bureau mat, and it looks great with the photos and dogs. And now you are ready to quilt your propeller quilt, you are on a roll. Looking forward to the promised turkey to come soon.

  12. Tony's bureau mat is quite lovely with the colors and pretty fabrics. That autumn stew looks delicious! We have some cooler weather at night, but still in the high 80s to low 90s during the day. But I know that fall is coming, so I am content and so grateful to be here in far north Texas and not still living in south Texas, where not much in the way of seasonal change takes place. Yay for Tony, glad the tests revealed nothing!

  13. I enjoy your needlework. I really have something I need to finish, but I am procrastinating...
I have to keep reminding my hubby that being 75 brings changes, especially when you are being treated for cancer! It's been a challenge.

  17. It's crazy how fast September is going! I can totally relate to not having enough time in the day to get everything done. Your quilts are looking so good, and the backing fabric for the Propeller quilt is a perfect match! I love how you're using sewing to honor Tony's family history. That stew also sounds so warm and comforting for the fall. It's so sweet that Lillian's family kept her blog up—what a nice tribute. I'm also really happy to hear that Tony is doing better!

  20. Jocelyn Tony’s dresser scarf is perfect with his phot collection. Your propeller quilt is beautiful and that rabbit is just too cute. I’m glad to hear Tony is adjusting to his new normal. Thank you for sharing on To Do Tuesday. Hope you have had another good week enjoying the beginning of fall. 😁

  21. I am so glad that you and Tony are there for each other and that he has such a wonderful attitude. Every day is truly a gift. Your stew sounds delicious. Funny story -- years ago one of Bernie's work colleagues was coming to dinner and we knew he was a VERY picky eater who liked his food as plain and boring as possible. I promised I wasn't making anything weird or fancy, just a hot dish with some cumin, and his eyes bugged out of his head: "You're making HOG DISH with HUMANS?!! Hahaha! Poor boy would have been happier eating hot dogs wrapped in Wonder Bread buns!

  22. Look at that rabbit! He is glorious... our dog (and possibly the fence) has cut down on bunny visits. Tony's family pictures look so nice. I would be interested in why they immigrated from England. My family did too but probably 100+ years earlier. And, I have no idea why either. Cute propeller block. I'm sure you'll enjoy all the colors while quilting.

  24. Tony's dresser scarf (wonder where that name originated from) is perfect with his family photos. I suspect he's quite pleased with it. It's good that all the testing hasn't shown a concern but I'm sure you both wanted an 'answer' and a fix. My RC (83) is slowing down and has fallen a few times so it limits where we can go.

  25. Great job on Tony's bureau scarf. I know he must love it. I'm glad he has made peace with his new version. It's not easy to do. I am glad he can still find enjoyment in the activities he can do. Thanks for sharing with us at Monday Musings.

My favourite thing about having a blog is hearing from you. I appreciate it so much and I will definitely check out your blog too. Thanks!
