YouTube Videos, Hand Quilting, Feelings

Richard Scarry books were a favourite of my children and then the grandsons. So many things on every page to point to and talk about. We had to make a rule with younger daughter, Beth, that she couldn't choose one of Richard's books for a night time read in bed book. She was the one so reluctant to give up on the day and she still makes the most of her busy days starting with a very early morning run.

We had geese flying overhead yesterday and turkeys trotting through though not in a cute little red car.

It was so sad that our little pond completely dried up with the summer droughts. The well we used to top it up also dried up. Both firsts for here. It will be interesting to see if winter snows can bring them back.
I collected a few little shells from the bottom. A surprise as I never knew there were crustaceans in our pond.
I enjoyed this video of Megan explaining what it was like to wear dresses for a year. She is Mormon but it wasn't for religious reasons and it was interesting to hear what her final thoughts were. I wear dresses in summer time and do like it...I've also noted the convenience of not having to worry about tops and bottoms and also just how comfy it feels. Megan gives links to where she bought her dresses, some on Amazon.
BTW, Megan is now recording and sharing her journey with breast cancer. It's so awful how rates of that dreadful disease keep rising. It's so frustrating that all the substantial funds thrown at research can't seem to further our knowledge of how to beat this for good.

With Tony's help, I moved the smaller television into the sewing room. So here's my hand quilting set up now. That's Kate there from The Last Homely House that I'm watching.
I decided that quilting circles would be appropriate for the Propeller quilt and, for the first time, I'm using chalk to mark the lines. It's okay so far.
So there I am, stitching and watching Kate show how she hand quilts at her table half a country and the Atlantic Ocean away. These are amazing times to live in!

I had a tiny epiphany while searching for the slippers I'd stowed away last spring. While searching I found two things I'd forgotten about and was happy to come across them. So I realized it isn't such a complete waste of time to have to look for something after all. Sadly still have not found the slippers.

This post has been my usual mishmash of topics. I started with a children's book, the idea for which was so cleverly devised by Richard over 50 years ago and still lives on though he has been gone over twenty years. I'll finish with a line I have written in a notebook. It's meaningful because we all know what loss feels like and I've said at times I'm the queen of losses. But even when suffering, luckily I knew what I hadn't lost...my life, my health, a limb, my mind- though in private inside my head, very sad woe is me mode for quite a while, and with a little more time I felt fortunate to not lose my family and my history. So I often repeat to myself in my sternest inside voice...you be thankful you.

And here's the line- How shall the heart be reconciled/ to its feast of losses? Kunitz

Change, he decides. Learn to embrace the new version of yourself, scarred yes, and without whatever it is you know/feel you've lost. It's so good when you figure out what works for you to achieve that...whatever it is that can move you forward past it all.
Well that's enough chatter. Hope you are calm and peaceful and enjoying these September days whether it's warming up or cooling down where you are.

  1. sorry your pond dried up that is so different to look at isn't it but with the pond drying up the animals and birds that use it leave too. Hopefully you will get a lot of rain this fall and winter and it will fill back up soon

  2. The drought must have been severe to dry completely the pond and your well. The little shells are pretty on the quilt! Your studio looks great, what a cozy place to hand quilt the Propeler quilt! Love the circles!
Thank you for sharing your projects and thoughts and linking up.

  3. The circles are the perfect quilting pattern to add to your propeller quilt! We read Richard Scary books to our daughter when she was little. Robert Munch was also a favourite along with I spy books. Hope your pond fills back up soon. It was a very dry summer. Gail at the Cozy quilter

  4. My favourite authors were Arthur Ransome ( Swallows and Amazons) and naturally Enid Blyton. Books have always been a huge part of my life and still are. Somewhere I had found a saying " The Polar bear, can I become acclimated to pain" as he walked the frozen snow I guess. Yours is so apt, and to accept loss although hard might make it easier to accept, and focus on what we have.As our GP told Hugh, " Every morning you can put your feet on the floor is good". ( After his heart attack) Hope the snow or rain fills the dry pond.

  5. We loved Richard Scarry books at our house, too. I went on to use them in my preschool classroom for many years! I just love your propeller quilt, Jocelyn. Are you quilting it on the table like Kate does in her videos? I'd really like to try making some of those blocks - what is your method for cutting the parts to them? Enjoy your stitching today!

  7. Such a shame your pond dried up, as you say maybe the winter snows will replenish it and the well. Richard Scary my younger sister had some of his books.

  8. What a shame about your pond drying up for the first time ever, it must have been such a shock to see that gradually happen. I'm a fan of Kate's too, and love her You Tube shows, guess I like her sensible down to earth English approach. She really makes you feel like she is your friend. Do you also watch Helen from Mousiemakes? She is English too, quite a different personality, such a lovely gentle lady who could also be your friend, that's how it feels.

  9. Look at all those shells. You sure found a great many different kinds of snail. I love how you have your room set up now.

    God bless.

  10. Richard Scarry is always fun. Wow - that dried up lake is crazy. Love the little fish dish you put the shells in. Love the little circles on your propellers.

Always grateful for what I have. I sometimes fear the losses I'm going to have in the future, but that's the price for the love I have. And I like who I am (which includes all the bumps and bruises from the past). Hugs and love to you.

  11. Oh, I do love to wear a pretty dress and yes, each day is a gift for which there is much to be thankful for. Alas, getting older brings the reality of many losses and sickness edging closer. I love Kate of The Last Lonely House. Her videos are calming. I love the whimsy of your Propeller quilt. Such a sweet pattern and pretty fabrics.

  13. I didn't realize how dry your summer had been as well. Not fun. I do take comfort that you are finding things while searching for other things (same here). I am in love with your propeller quilt and like the quilting you are doing! Love Kate's videos as well! Take care!

  14. Wow on the pond, but how cool to be able to walk "in" it and find shells! The circles are perfect for your propeller quilt - love it. Thank you for sharing every thing you share, you have no idea how much we all look forward to your posts! I love the "you be thankful, you" - something I needed this week!

  15. I parted with a lot of the children's books I had but not Richard Scarry's books! They could capture the attention of my wiggleworm son and that was amazing! lol I'm sorry for the drought, hard to lose the pond for now and the well! About loss; I am trying to embrace the new me but I still feel fractured.

  16. Our pond also dried up this year. We had a mother duck and her babies swimming across it in the spring. It's sad to see it gone. My son loved the Richard Scarry books! His name brought back memories. I think life is all about losses. Sometimes they're small while other times, they're soul crushing. Nothing stay the same.

  17. I'm one who cannot stand sweaty skin against sweaty skin, so no dresses for me! What to wear is easy a pair of pants or shorts and a colored T-shirt... I wear the men's ones with the breast pocket; it is a great place for my scissors! Very little thought goes into my simple wardrobe.

  18. How sad about your pond AND the well! I sure hope you get them both back. I look forward to following your hand quilting project. That is on my bucket list to learn. I also watch Kate at The Last Homely House. She is so easy to listen to and is full of wonderful ideas.

  19. We are in a severe drought too. The pond is deep enough to survive, but the river near me is barely flowing. Praying for a wet winter and spring! Life is bittersweet - full of losses and gains, sorrows and joys. I think we handle all of it best when we accept that reality and try to be grateful for the positive as much as we can. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  20. I couldn't agree more about the Richard Scary books. So much time could be spent on any page!

  21. You know, I never think of turning on the TV when I'm sewing. One of my hand stitching chairs is perfectly placed for watching. Machie sewing, not so much. I'm a fan of contemporary jazz so I listen to that most of the time, if I have any sound at all.

  22. I wear dresses most of the time in the summer and find them much cooler. My mother wore nothing but dresses her entire life. Her only concession to winter was to add a short pair of longjohns beneath. Hope your slippers surface before it gets too cold!

My favourite thing about having a blog is hearing from you. I appreciate it so much and I will definitely check out your blog too. Thanks!
