Stitching Slowly, Food and Flowers, Fall Blooms and Birds

Hello again and thanks so much for stopping by. I heard the Barred Owls hooting early morning around 4 am and stayed awake till they finished about half an hour later. Then I slept in till 9, so late for me that Tony woke up enough to ask if I was alright.

Last fall I watched a wonderful moment...an adult male Cardinal was feeding two young ones in the big fir in the back yard. It took a long time to get this photo and I never did capture a good photo of the three. But here are the new Cardinals patiently waiting for his return. I'm thinking they would have been from a second or possibly third brood.

I had the patio door open for the dogs one day and a baby Chickadee flew in. I didn't notice till I saw  Ned excitedly at the side window and realized at the same moment, Petey was pacing nervously. I easily captured the tiny thing in my hands and it flew off no problem. I hope it had been there so briefly as to not notice at all. I still remember the surprising warmth of its tiny body in my hands.

Fading blooms but still so pretty in the September sun ...
I've had a busy week though I've not left the property. In the garden, I've been dead heading and using my Gorilla cart to carry it away to my various piles in the woods. These piles are getting bigger (but they collapse some too with the weight of snow) and in the winter I will see prints of critters using them for a little warmth or even a home maybe.
As soon as that heat left us, I was back in the pool for a daily swim which, with the much cooler water, is so invigorating. We will be getting it closed at the end of the month so I have to make the most of it.

Inside I used my Bread machine to make a Sweet Bread for Tony. He loves bread so much he was happy enough with egg salad sandwiches and a salad for dinner the night I baked it. I like doing this because I can add my own ingredients like an egg for a little extra nutrition. This Kitchenarm is working out very well.
I also made a meat loaf one day and covered the top with a little catsup/honey mixture like Mom used to do. Do you do that?
I found that oval pyrex dish at a thrift store and it is just the right size for a one pound meat loaf.
I always bake potatoes and sweet potatoes too when I have the oven on.
Another night I made tacos and that seems to be as adventurous in the kitchen I get these days.

I read this book When Madeline Was Young by Jane Hamilton. I'm pretty sure I read it before but long ago. Just the odd line here and there was twigging with me but I very much enjoyed the reread if that was what it was. I've loved all Jane's books.
Slow Stitching This Week
I finished the hand quilting lines on Tony's bureau scarf and have it ready for finishing completely. Someone is pretty much always there reminding me to put the needle down and get moving.
And look what the Best Grandma has taken out for September very slow stitching.
Autumn Quakers is almost at the finish line so my goal is to enjoy these last few motifs and any extra stitches that may need to be added. I'd forgotten how wonderful and truly Autumn like the colours are.

One more thing...I almost forgot to show you this. In my wonky Propeller quilt top, I'd made one block stars and stripes just for fun as a little nod to my American blogging friends who have been so kind to me and this blog.
LeeAnna at Not Afraid of Color's prompt this week was did we get new clothes for going back to school in September. Though we wore school uniforms, I always got a new cardigan, coat and shoes which were usually bought for me. I do remember the first time Mom took me out to West Street to Goodyear and House Department Store in Corner Brook to help pick them out. It was a huge treat. That store had a section in the basement just for Boy Scout and Girl Guide uniforms so I went there to get my uniform later on. Dad's best jacket, a Harris tweed, came from that store. He wore it for decades. I guess a lot of towns had a wonderful general retail store like that. What about you? New duds for a new school year?

Memory is tricky isn't it...I can remember that stuff but be fuzzy about some very recent things. For example... currently I'm on the hunt for my slippers I stored away somewhere last May. Very annoying!

I hope you are remembering where you tucked away all your belongings and your Sunday is going well. We are going to a couple of Open Houses. Wish us luck!

  1. I LOVED your post, and your answer about school clothes. The fave part for me was your final comment about finding your carefully stored slippers, yep... I can relate to putting something (usually jewelry) some place safe. There are some things I've looked for for years now!

  2. My Nanny used to make the most delicious meatloaf. She would slather the top of it with ketchup and sliced green peppers. I bet yours was delicious. Your Autumn Quakers stitch is looking beautiful- love the colors. Have a blessed day. Hugs

  3. I recently read where someone kept a list on her journal entitled "Where I put it." 😂 I think I'm going to start a similarly named list

  4. It's cooler here in northern Indiana, I wore shoes yesterday when I mowed the yard. I wear sandals all summer so shoes felt very different! Autumn quakers is so pretty, you are doing a good job. I hope the cardinals stay close to you so you can have color all winter, blessings!

  5. New school clothes were a huge treat, I still remember the one year that I was allowed to buy 2 new skirts, costing $2.00 each. Can't recall any other back to school shopping ever so I guess this one memory stuck with me. Please tell me the size squares or rectangle you cut to make your wonky propeller blocks - I love that quilt top you just completed. Good luck with your open house visits.

  6. Almost 5.30 a.m. and the Lunar Eclipse is well on its way to being total. I always had a school uniform, gym tunic with 3 box pleats, and then a black one for one year, then at High School, a grey one, lighter fabric with a white blouse under, and heavier for winter. No pleats. I cannot remember going shopping for clothes, my Mum made everything. And for years I also made everything. Bread machine, there is nothing like your own home made bread, and so easy.

  7. Yes, school clothes bring back memories! Like Nancy J’s Mum, my mother made all the school dresses for my sister and me. We didn’t wear uniforms. And when we got to high school, we helped her make the navy blue skirts that were required. We did buy the sweaters, any color, that we wore with them. Dot in NC

  9. I love meat loaf and make it shaped like a loaf on a baking pan and also bake potatoes with it. My grandchildren always wanted mashed potatoes with it so keep them happy if they were visiting I would make what they wanted but with just us it is baked potatoes. The birds and flowers are lovely

  11. Mmm, meatloaf, havent made one of those for ages. I cook mine in a metal loaf tin. Now I'm cooking for one things have changed a bit in the kitchen. Although I often cook the same sized meals for two, and freeze the extra meal. We used to enjoy a lot of stit fries, usually pork or chicken, satay or sweet chili with rice. I'm still cooking the same quantities and freezing the second meal, makes it fun when I'm looking in the freezer for something quick to defrost heat and eat.

    1. I have a recipe for meatloaf made with ground turkey and apples. I have a silicone mini loaf pan that I use …less time in the oven and easy to freeze the extras for another day. Your cross stitch is a lovely fall project. I just started a fall cross stitch picture…it doesn’t look like much yet. My husband and I often misplace something…annoying! Gail at the cozy quilter

  12. Little birds are so cool! How lucky you caught that little chickadee. I always used to put catsup on my meatloaf! Enjoy your slow stitching - it looks great.

  13. Your Autumn Quakers is looking gorgeous!! I put a ketchup mixture on meatloaf but not with honey in it! Those smaller local department stores were great - that’s where I shopped for fabric for making clothes back in the ‘60’s - no such thing as fabric or quilting shops back then. And, yes, new clothes every fall!

  14. Those cardinals are so precious. That bread has a wonderful texture! I do a sweet sauce on my meatloaf made with brown sugar mixed with ketchup. Then I place bacon strips across - yum! Autumn Quakers is very pretty, love the fall colors. Mom and I used to go to a little store down from the drugstore when my Daddy was pharmacist. It was called Ellard's, and you could find a little bit of everything. We bought fabric for my clothes there. I have no remembrance of buying clothes, although I know we did. I bet you'd love to have that jacket of your Dad's.

  15. What a great post. Very cool picture of the cardinals. So amazing that you got such a wonderful picture. I am in total awe of your autumn cross stitch. It is remarkable. Truth told -- I get totally turned around/mis-count on cross stitch that is bigger than 3 or 4". I don't do it often. As for school clothes shopping I assume we did that -- no uniforms were required. I can vividly remember a blue dress my mom made for me on her trusted, used Heavy Weight singer. I don't know the number but compared to the Featherweight -- it weighed a ton! I finally donated it last year to a group that teaches women how to sew. It still worked fine despite sitting around for years. Swimming in a cold pool just makes me shiver! Enjoy your week.

  17. I just love your Autumn cross stitch. So nice that you were able to grab that little bird and send it back outdoors. I would have been scared! It's definitely getting cooler here in Massachusetts. It feels as though Fall came early this year.

  18. Your runner and Autumn Quakers are both beautiful, and perfect slow stitching projects! Cute propeler too. Thank you for sharing your happy place and linking up! I hope you find your slippers before it gets cold ;)

  19. Your slow stitching is just beautiful. Love the overall Autumnal colours in it. Glad you got the chickadee back outside. As far as back to school clothing we always got an outfit or two, and a new coat every third winter.

    God bless.

  20. Hearing the owls must be so nice. I've never heard them here so they mustn't be around.
And yes, ketchup was pretty much always on top of meatloaf when I was growing up.
I don't really remember much about getting new clothes for school but I don't think it happened very often. Any 'new' (at least new to me) clothes were always at least two sizes too big so I could grow into them. Couple that with the fact that I was really skinny on top of being super tall so you can imagine how I swam in them.

  21. Great post, Jocelyn! I really enjoyed it. Love the RWB block you made. Your cross stitch is absolutely stunning and that sweet pup looking up at you from the quilt - precious! As for school clothes, I did get a few at the beginning of the school year, with new shoes. We had a couple of neat places growing up to get goodies and it was always a treat for me to go into town. Many of my clothes were handmade though, which was fine with me! Thanks for the good memories and thanks for sharing with us at Monday Musings.

  22. What a lovely post Jocelyn. I always enjoy reading to see what is going on in another part of our gorgeous country. My mom’s meatloaf topping was ketchup and brown sugar. I still make it occasionally if I’m not putting a layer of salsa and then cheese and onion biscuits. My DH likes it because then I don’t make potatoes 😁. Your fall stitchery is beautiful and congrats on almost finishing Tony's dresser scarf. Thank you for sharing on To Do Tuesday
