Free Patterns, Christmas /Winter Stitching, Orphan Blocks

Below are a few early winter photos while the snow is a novelty. While walking the dogs, I'm finding the air so wonderful and bracing. But I am a little shocked with just how cold it is already in the season. It was minus 12 with strong wind gusts that took my breath away one day, but it's back to mild and kind of damp feeling today.

Here is my usual kitchen window photo; it was dark enough very early for the big garage light to stay on. That's another thing; here in the Northern Hemisphere we are now tilting further away from the sun and our daylight is noticably and suddently it seems to me, shortened. It's dark earlier in the evenings and I'm getting up in darkness already.

And here's a sewing room window shot.
Yes, winter has arrived.

"Little by little, the bird builds its' nest." I've watched them build nests, twig by twig, grass blade by grass blade, even in the rain, and their perseverance is amazing. A lesson is in that for me/us that something significant can be achieved by doing even just the tiniest of steps. I'm trying to keep this thought in mind with my stitching these days. Even a few stitches here and there count.
And in the sewing room I'm building my house too. I have the windows constructed and am ready to applique them down. These were small but fiddly.
There is not a good photo of this table runner in the book and I couldn't find one online. The book again is Blackbird Designs, Tending the Garden.
In an effort to put old orphan blocks to use, I pulled out these in reds and put them up on the back hallway wall. I must have been trying out star blocks. Isn't it funny how you can forget you made things. I wonder if this is enough for a Christmasy hanging. Potential maybe? I know some of these were stitched for past So Scrappy RSC parties when red came around.
I've added the Christmas embroideries I stitched along with Nanette, A Passionate Quilter, at the time, I think in 2020. I still miss her and wish her blog was still available so I could visit and look at her wonderful quilting. The free patterns are still available at this link- Holiday Stitch-a-Long, Moda. Anyway, perhaps there is a way to cobble these together that would make pretty sense. I have lots of red fabrics for borders, etc. which I'd love to use up. Any ideas??

That mention of embroidering reminds me- our pal, Melisa, at Pinker n Pumpkin Quilting, is posting sets of Country Christmas Doodles, very cute little free patterns for Christmas. Thank you, Melisa, for sharing your talent with us!

And the stars reminded me I watched Rachel on her YouTube channel, Stitch With Rachel, share step by step instrucitons on how to sew a beautiful Christmas quilt using a Tilda panel. There are lots of beautiful panels that could suit this star treatment.
For Cross Stitching friends, below is Liz Matthews' free download called Winter Celebration which is appropriate for us folks here in Ontario right now. Isn't it sweet! Love Cardinals and Houses. Link to Liz's lovely free patterns page is HERE.

We are surrounded by inspiration, wonderful ideas, and beautiful images.
Ok, back to reality. The first thing I have to do today after clicking publish is take the last of the  summer stuff down to the basement closet and bring up our heavier coats and boots. Then we will be fully prepared.
I have a lot more to talk about so next time then. Hope you are feeling content and keeping busy whether it is winter or summer where you are.
So thankful for linky parties; thank you all for hosting! Quilting Patchwork AppliqueCreations Art QuiltsKathy's QuiltsQuilting is More Fun Than HouseworkMelva Loves Scraps and Days Filled With Joy.

  3. The early snows are always beautiful because they are new to us. We haven't had any here yet, and that is actually kind of strange for mid-November. Your red house is so fun, and so are the red stars and embroideries on the design wall. I've just been thinking about making a red and white quilt myself! Thanks for sharing all the pretty things you find to sew and stitch!

  4. We had snow starting Sunday morning then for several days. Now the temp has warmed up and we're back to moving leaves. You have the potential for a lovely Christmas quilt. I also enjoy watching Rachel on YouTube. Happy stitching!

  6. Here I am way further south than home, such long twilight hours, and 4C this morning.Funny, I longed for a frost on the grass but not quite cold enough. The stitchery blocks with the others will be so lovely with sashing, not too bright, maybe green? And the view from your windows is perfect.

  7. Beautiful winter shots. I really like the red and white blocks with the embroidery. I have not worked a lot with different sized orphan blocks, so I don't have any layout help. I like your idea to sash with more reds. Stay warm!

  10. Winter came here for a brief visit earlier this week. The snow has all melted now and we got the front leaves raked and gardens cleaned out yesterday. Still a bit to do in the back yard. So fun to see your orphan blocks on the design wall. I’m sure you will be able to make a wall hanging or two with them. Your house is looking great. I like the way you are doing the windows. 11. Hi Jocelyn, Nanette's blog is still open: https://doitrightquilter.com/
I miss her too! I still have a few of those pretty embroideries too and think I'll try to work on them again. I love your snow photos. "Bracing" is a great word, and icy cold is my favorite air to breathe!

  12. I too like your house and fiddly is right about those tiny pieces! Yes, those RSC stars will pair nicely with your embroidered blocks. Play with them until you find an arrangement that you like. Then fill in the spaces with some small scale Christmas prints. I also could envision some embroidered words like Peace, Joy, or whatever speaks to you as a filler too! Have fun. That is a great idea you have!

  14. I love the snow! Probably because we hardloop have any Here in the Netherlands. Just rain and that is so boring, snow is so much prettier. Lovely blocks, winter is perfect for patching and quilten.

  15. You already have snow! Well, it seems like the right time to put away summer clothes and get out winter ones! I will do the same later, temperatures are still ok here in South France, we had 17°C this morning but it's supposed to go down next week. I love your cute house and pretty red stars. Thank you for sharing and linking up!

  18. I had another thought. . .maybe use checkerboard sashing to set the blocks. Red and white fabrics would look great around those blocks!

  19. Thanks for the beautiful winter photos. Snow always makes the house feel cozy. I love how your lovely embroidery blocks look with the red pieced stars. I am sure there is a wonderful quilt waiting there for you to discover. Have a good week!

  20. Beautiful winter photos. I'm also stuck in snow but I don't mind. It the time of the year when I can sit back and enjoy life more. The little applique house is coming along beautifully. I love the red stars with the embroideries. May I suggest some green sashing to bring out the green in the embroidery blocks? Whatever you decide, I'm sure it will turn out spectacular. Enjoy and stay warm. ;^)

  21. Your area looks like the middle of winter! No snow for us yet here in Massachusetts but I'm sure it will show up one of these days. I like your blocks all together. I'm not sure how to work them all into a quilt. I'm sure you'll find a way!

  22. Good Morning - Melisa from Pinker Punkin shared your site - now following! Here in FL, we get the darkness but not the snow. We're getting used to it - just wish my dog and cat would! Have a lovely day. Blessings.

  23. All our snow is gone, but we could end up with freezing rain on Wednesday. Not what I like to read or hear about. Pretty sure you could get a lovely Christmassy type wall hanging from those blocks.

    God bless.

  25. The photos of your outdoors is so pretty! You red house looks like a fun project. It would take me forever to stitch down all those pieces. The red quilt blocks will make a pretty quilt. 26. We had snow here in Indiana that covered the ground. Then it warmed up for a couple days and now it's back to being chilly. I followed the link to those Moda embroideries. I can go down the rabbit hole so easily, and I love hand work. I like the layout you have with the stars alternating. Your cross stitch pillow is adorable. I guess I didn't realize Liz Matthews has a free page. Your post is just full of inspiration.

  29. Your house is looking great so far. Not being able to find a good photo of the completed project means you're creating a mystery for us to enjoy!
As for the stars/embroideries, could you add borders to each block to make them uniform in size and then put them together into a small quilt?

  30. Those red and white blocks with the Christmas embroidery would be wonderful as a wall hanging. I miss Nanette too, such a sweet friend and so generous with her time and talents. We have had only a sparkle of snow so far, but I hear winter will be here on Friday!
