Great Thrift Store Find, Sixty Courthouse Steps, Flowers Flowering, Winter Boots

The daily rain finally stopped and we had sun yesterday that felt glorious. I spent as much time outside as I could. It was a quiet kind of day and I noticed for the first time, leaves gently letting go and falling from the trees. Our little pond has been fully restored and the burgundy Sedum was beautiful in the sunlight.

I need to show you what I bought at the Value Village that I liked and thought was a bargain.  Here she is, Girl With Blue Ball.  She is porcelain and was fashioned between 1924 and 1974 by Nao so considered vintage.

She cost me $7.99 and I did think twice even with seeing the marking and registration number on the bottom. I've been frustrated with not being able to find her online but did find a similar boy with blue ball on Ebay. The asking price was $75.  She reminds me of the story that was in one of my school readers, The Frog Prince.  In that story, the ball was a golden one. I can still remember how sorry I felt for the frog when she rejected him.

She is beside my Madagascar Jasmine plant. It continues to survive so I must be doing something right.  It keeps sending out more vines and had two flowerings during the summer. Here was July's blooming of the very white, sort of hanging flowers.

I'm looking to buy a new pair of winter casual boots. Any suggestions?? I've been eyeing these by Ymombest.

I especially like the emphasis on anti-slip soles.  I looked at them Here at Amazon but maybe I'd rather more of a higher ankle boot so I'm going to check if this same one comes in another style. I seem to be spending more time considering shoes and boots than ever, and mostly with an eye to ones that will keep me upright!

During our gray days, I spent a couple of sessions on the machine. I'd made 60 blocks for the scrappy Courthouse Steps project and then ran out of the heritage French General red fabric (while there seems to be no end to the scrappy bits!)

I debated ordering more but then thought I could make up in borders what might be missing in blocks. I'd like this to be a single sized quilt which is like 35 x 75 or so. Next step will be taking out the papers and sewing the blocks together. Here on my queen size bed.

I know many of you love pumpkins like I do.  I watched this video by the wonderful Jan Patek who I love for the laid back attitude and sense of fun she brings to her stitching. She offers a free PDF of this small quilt too HERE

I spent ages one day making a new music cd for the car. Navigating Windows Media on my Acer (which I had to use a YouTube video to find !), a converter on the net and locating some of the free music I liked on YouTube taxed my brain. But I got through it and got it done. Here is the list of what is on this one. Anything here you would like?

Heavy on the old days and some before my time even and some what I think of as since my time. One of these days I'll have to buy a new fangled phone where I've heard you can download your music without all this hassle.
Ok that's enough from me today. I've got veggies boiling to make a curry for supper. I have roast chicken leftovers to add some protein to the pot.  I want most of it together before heading outside to do some chores.  What's in your cooking pot today? I can always use suggestions.
Take care all!

Nice find with the figurine. Such nice soft colors. Your plant looks hearty, you much be doing something right. I love that shade of red. French General makes some delightful fabrics. There's a blue I particularly like that I'm hoarding-ha! I'll have to give in and make something out of it eventually. Your song list is great. So many memories came to mind as I read your list.

Curry sounds yummy! I pulled some carnitas from the freezer for dinner tonight but still need to figure out some sides for it. When I lived up north, I had Yak Tracks to put on the bottom of my boots for walking on slippery/icy areas. I miss the changing colors of the leaves up north in the fall - thankfully my sister has been taking lots of photo's and posting them on Facebook for me to enjoy.

Love those boots, I like ones with a zipper either side, and definitely a n on slip sole. Real leather is a must for me, and a wide fit, so I can wear the real wool socks that come almost to me knees. I remember hemming a pair of trousers for a friend, he was Swiss, and they had a 3/4 lining, and a curved hem.

I love your courthouse steps! I thought about getting those boots last year and then didn't - I don't really need warm boots very often here and most times get by with sneakers and wool socks - the couple days of the winter that we get snow I have a pair of leather ankle boots that are for rough wear (not fancy) that usually work - let me know if you like those that you show if you order them. Love your flowers

jasmine and statues of grace. Songs I know and love, (CCR story, a church friend got her mom to agree to their concert because she said it was a "revival" concert) (her mom was pretty mad when she found out)

You picked a lot of my favorites for your play list.

I read your play list, and must say mine would be slanted more towards the 50s and 60s, songs we grew up with my favourite radio station often says. Elvis, Beach Boys, Hollies and the like. But music is so personal, isnt it.
What's in my cooking pot, you ask. I've got some rhubarb chopped and ready to cook for tomorrow's breakfast, and I'm making a saucy chicken pasta dish for tonight.
Your red blocks look great, havent you been busy running up and down all those courthouse steps!

If you want something sublime in the car try the slow movement from Beethoven's 9th Symphony. You will be the calmest driver on the road, and the beauty of it all will last the whole day. Then listen to the rest of the symphony!

I must say I'm in like with those boots! They're red so therefore what's not to like!!! I have a 'thing' for red shoes (my middle name should be Dorothy!).
I would add 'I Can Only Imagine' by Mercy Me to your play list but otherwise I'm on board with all your choices.
As for the cooking pot - tonight it was cabbage rolls and fried butternut squash.

Girl with a Blue Ball is a lovely figurine, and it sounds like she was an amazing bargain! I love your Courthouse Steps blocks - it looks like you've got a good size there. Your playlist has a lot of my favorites on it. I'm impressed you figured out how to make it!

What a great find and an excellent bargain on the "Girl with a blue ball".

Love the quilt so far. It is going to be beautiful.

God bless.

That girl with the blue ball sure is pretty and so is the quilt! I really liked your play list, we knew all of those tunes.

Good stuff. The Sedum is pretty. We have some here. Look at all those blocks!

A lovely newsy post. We have a very similar sedum in our garden, but it is just waking up from the winter. Your figurine is very elegant. I love the red accent fabric on your blocks. I’m sure you will make the borders work. We no longer have a CD player in our car and aren’t real tech savvy with music on our phones, so need to work something out for music when we travel. I keep putting it off. Your dinner sounds good. We are making a chicken casserole and peach cobbler for dinner tonight. Both in camp ovens. We are enjoying playing with them.

The courthouse steps is looking really great - the red is so vibrant! What an eclectic song list! I prefer to listen to classical music in the car and pay for Sirius XM satellite radio so have access to it (as well as lots of other channels) anywhere I am. At home there’s a great classical music radio station when I need music in the background. Dinner tonight? - chicken Marsala, rice, and string beans with shallots! Have a great weekend!

Your courthouse steps are gorgeous. I bet that jasmine smells good. Yay on the beautiful thrift find! She reminds me of Willow Tree figurines, of which I have a couple. I love those boots but have no luck buying shoes online. I recently bought a pair of cowboy boots to celebrate my recovery from bunion surgery - lol! The nice lady that helped me told me I had been wearing shoes that are too large, most likely because of my bunion, so I was glad she was there to assist me with sizes.
Have a great weekend Jocelyn!

Hello,

I always enjoy reading your blog. The playlist is right up my alley! You may want to check out Keen boots if you are looking for a sturdy tread for the snow.
Take good care.

I love the songs on your playlist. They're all very familiar to me! Love your courthouse steps. The porcelain piece was a great find. I used to know someone who collected pieces by Nao.

Hi Jocelyn! Oh, that burgundy sedum is just gorgeous. What a lovely time of year it is! What an eclectic playlist of music! I am a huge fan of your first song - Perfect. I find myself humming that all the time and wake during the night with it on my mind. Happy Thursday to you. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

Awesome find. The oldest grandson decided he wanted to go to homecoming, and we found a nice suit jacket and then some pants at Goodwill. Your courthouse steps are so lovely. I adore the red you are using. Great music. I love Ed Sheeran's song Perfect. Fabulous playlist.

Jocelyn - our maple was gloriously red, and just in the last couple of days, with the deep frosts, they have all but fallen! Those boots look comfy, but I would go with something a little taller ... no specific recommendation other than Keens! I like many of your music selections, such as Adele, John Denver, Lady Gaga, and Creedence! Tonight I cooked up a huge batch of Swiss Chard, a gift from a neighbor. Yummy!

Oh my goodness, I haven't thought about that Skeeter Davis song in years! I loved it when I was a teen. Now I'm going to have to find it on youtube and listen again.
Your log cabins looks great. It's always hard when we run out of fabric when it's one of the focus fabrics. I'm sure you'll come up with the best choice for the quilt.

Hello Jocelyn,
The yarns on your banner are brilliant & beautiful. The vintage girl is a great find and I envy your green thumb with the Stephanotis!

Wow Jocelyn, your figurine is such a great find and a GREAT price! She's lovely! I liked your playlist :) Some of the newer music I don't know but it is a neat list! Your courthouse quilt is FANTASTIC! I remember decades ago, Alex Anderson had a quilt show on hgtv and she said one day that she considered red a neutral in most quilts and yours is a perfect example! It's a great size and will make a wonderful quilt! Have a wonderful day and a great weekend!

I love your courthouse steps blocks! Hope you don't mind if I borrow your idea of a solid color with scraps, it is just so striking. Your playlist had me singing this morning, lots of good songs there. As far as cooking, I made chicken broth this week and we had chicken vegetable noodle soup with homemade parmesan cheese rolls. I love soup and bread meals in fall and winter.

That's a lot of work on the quilt. My sister is a quilt master, I haven't tried. Not sure I have the patience and sewing skill for it. I like small crafty projects that I can complete in a relatively short period of time. I got two large rocks painted last summer for the cabin deck. - Margy

I've been eyeing up those boots too. I want something I can just slip on for running out in the car. It's hard to drive with knee high SNOWBOOTS.

Love the Court House Steps quilt. What am I putting in the pot? 2 cups of dry black beans with 2 cups of spicy hot tomato juice, then add 5 more cups of water in the crock pot, chopped minced garlic and add 3 bay leaves. Let cook on high overnight. Wake up to delicious odors. In the morning add your choice of seasonings and enjoy! This is a favorite of ours. Great with blue corn chips and salsa and a little cheese too.

Hi Jocelyn - my favorite posts always contain bits of life and this is perfect! Quilting, cooking, thrifting, and even some music and shopping. It is rich with your life. Love your playlist and I would totally enjoy hearing that selection of music. The Nao figurine is adorable and a steal! As for removing all of the papers.... that doesn't sound fun to me at all. What if you used muslin or an old sheet for the foundation and just left it - would that work? Taking the papers off always seems miserable to me!! Have a wonderful Sunday. PS - I have the same sedum plan in my yard. This year a deer came through and ate the tops off of each stem - but then it bloomed a second time just beautifully! Lucky me.

That boot looks to be perfect for my foot during winter LOL There are no snow here but my foot stay cold as an ice block. I like your playlist.
Have fun and happy new stitching/quilting week.
