Just like that, our world outside is a million shades of green.
Tony and Ned on the side lawn |
I put a mirror up and saw the robin's eggs have hatched. It is a good spot well protected by the house roof which is also under the veranda roof. I got a quick shot of her. We can now sneak in and out the door without disturbing her.
As promised here are three of my latest thrifted summer tops. Below is the one I'm most concerned about...such a bright colour with such large blooms. I'm not sure it's really me (whoever the heck I am these days) but I was swayed by the brand. "They will see you coming" as my father used to say about wearing something colourful. But then, I guess summer is when we do go bigger with prints and colours. What do you think?
I've already worn this below a few times...light material and super comfortable. I have a silver necklace that perfectly suited this one. And I love the pockets. Here is another Northern Reflections made of a linen/cotton blend, also light weight for summer. Love it.
So, more fabric saved from the landfill! At that thrift store, I also spent time in the book section where they have a collection of very old books, ones bound in special ways that would have been expensive. I wished I could bring home a few I held as I hate to think of their fate. But it was nice to spend some time with them too.
Bramble Blooms I -My top is a flimsie. Improv is seriously not my thing so this gave me pause many times along the little journey. But in the end, as is true with all my stitching projects, this one too was a labour of love in its own way. Those turquoises are taking on a glow in the sunlight. I like how I used all scrap fabric in this project. So also way out of my comfort zone with these colours which are showing brighter than they really are.
And Audrey at Quilty Folk has challenged us to use a pieced center for Bramble Blooms II. I chose a dark teal/blue element from BBI and tested this pieced block. The design really appealed to me. More about this and the free pattern for it in another post. This is also not the true colour...it is very dark in real life as I want to move away from the BBI brights. Frustrating!
The topic of Birds Custard Powder mentioned in THIS POST stirred a lot of interest.
And jogged our memories for some of us older folks. Any one else remember your Mom setting tinned fruit in Jell-o for a dessert? A couple of people mentioned it and of course, I remember Mom doing this too for a week night dessert. I can't remember the last time I had Jell-o. But it is a great summer time dessert and I found this at the Pioneer Woman site... 26 Easy Jell-o Recipes to Whip Up Anytime For the Retro Desserts of Your Dreams. And that also made me think of Nigella Lawson who elevated gelatin desserts when she used it to make a fancy dessert served in individual glass bowls at a dinner party.
.
I do hope your week is off to a wonderful and perhaps even delicious start! Please stop by and share it with us! Sharing with Songbird Designs, Inquiring Quilter, A Quiltery, My Quilt Infatuation, Good Random Fun, Alycia Quilts and Quilt Fabrication.
Love the red top--I think it is very pretty...all nice tops...
ReplyDeleteBB came out beautifully--happy that you ended up liking it...
I am not so happy with mine and am considering taking it apart and using
the parts for something else!! But it was a learning experience just like
my recent Kawandi experiment...I think it's time to return to my "tried and true" sewing...;)))hugs, Julierose
Bramble Blooms turned out really good! so nice, bright and colorful and you are making a second one! Your shirts are nice looking for summer. I don't wear patterns usually just solids for some reason
ReplyDeleteI think your red floral shirt will be lovely for summer. Red looks very nice with silver hair. Happy stitching!
ReplyDeleteJelly made in bowl and served with fruit was always a very popular dessert, easy peasy but always so popular with the kids. We occasionally have it over summer, and jelly is on the list for pre-colonoscopy diets, lemon and lime only!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely spot you have!
ReplyDeleteWell done with the thrifted tops. They look fun, especially pockets.
Such a sweet quilt.
How fun to be able to watch the mama robin and her babies! I like your new tops - all of them. You say they are thrifted, but they look brand new to me! You have a knack for finding fun things at the thrift shop, Jocelyn. Bramble Blooms 1 is lovely! Those are great colors together - turquoise and pink and red. I think the final border looks great! We grew up as a Jello family, too. A favorite birthday treat was angel food cake slices topped with a combination of raspberry Jello, raspberries, and whipped cream. Haven't had that in a long time!
ReplyDeletelove your bramble blooms...so very pretty and spring-y...and yes, fruit in jello was a dessert at my childhood home as well as at pot luck suppers...
ReplyDeleteI loved Northern Reflections and still have several sweatshirts that are probably more than 20 years old. I was sad when they left our mall.
ReplyDeleteI really like your Bramble Bloom quilt, although, you're right, it's not your usual colors.
We always had jello salads as part of Sunday dinner and holiday meals. Someone occasionally brings some to potluck dinners.
Pat
I think I have a few shirts from Northern Reflections. There used to be a store at the mall but it closed years ago. I love your Bramble Blooms. Improv is not easy but you did a great job! My mother used to make Jell-o with fruit cocktail in it. It was so popular years ago!
ReplyDeleteI love all those thrifted tops. I am a red person (well black as well) so I would definitely be wearing that one.
ReplyDeleteThe flimsy is gorgeous!!! You are so very talented.
God bless.
Ahhh... all the greens. Sometimes birds pick the darnedest places to nest sometimes! I like your shirts, and your Bramble Blooms. Good stuff all around.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, Mom used to always put fruit in jello when we were youngsters. We loved it. Your summer tops are lovely, Jocelyn . I love the red one, but I am partial to red. Bramble Blooms is gorgeous . Woo Hoo on finishing into a flimsy! Have an awesome week. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteI love the red top! Go for it Jocelyn!!!!! As a red headed child I was not allowed to wear red except where it would not be in public, so I had red houseshoes, red pajamas, etc. As an adult I had my colors ‘done’ years ago and found that there are shades of red that are perfect for me! So I love finding red things that suit me, and I’m older than you are!!!! My mother was shy about wearing red because her father used to say it was a sign women were getting old! Amazing what our parents’ attitudes do to the way we think! She loved blue most of all, so I wore a lot of blue growing up, only to find it is not a good color for me at all!!!! And I’m not fond of blue…..I’m a lover of green and yellow and red! Your thrift shopping was very productive!
ReplyDeleteGood morning Jocelyn! I'm trying to catch up with your blog posts! I love teh shirts you got at the Thrift Store! I must say the thing I love the most is your Bramble Blooms. The colors are great and it's such a cheerful piece!!! As a kid, I ate Jello/Gelatin but I never really liked it. Now I appreciate it more because it is so refreshing during the hot summer. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteThat is a wonderful photo of Ned and Tony, and oh your landscape is just beautiful! Is your property fenced, can Ned go outside alone? Or is he always on the leash? What fun seeing Bramble Blooms as a quilt!! It turned out so pretty. I love all your thrifted tops, you chose well. Yes I like the red and white blooms, I can picture you in it in my mind's eye. I saw a Hawaiian print button up blouse at Walmart, shunned it, then went back and bought it - lol! I normally just buy stretchy tees, so this was different for me.
ReplyDeleteI laughed at your "whoever the heck I am these days" - lol!! I am going through that myself. I had to cut my hair short again after growing it past my shoulders since 2021. It was in damaged condition from highlighting and not getting much cut, so at least it is healthier now. But it's depressing me - sheesh!
Those thrifted tops are fun, enjoy them! Your flimsy is gorgeous! Love it!
ReplyDeletePersonally I think that red top would look lovely on you. Sometimes it's good to step outside our comfort zone.
ReplyDeleteTurquoise was the perfect addition to your quilt and I like all the movement you created. Well done! Now I see you're doing a second one...good for you!
Yes, I remember those jello desserts but haven't had one for years.
Bramble Blooms is so pretty! What a lovely top. Can't wait to see the finish. That new center block you pieced up is pretty. What a lovely start to another quilt! Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

The bright colored top is my favorite. Go for it! BE bold!
ReplyDeleteBramble Blooms continues to make me smile as it grows - so lovely! I look forward to seeing everything you add to it.
Oh to have the lovely yard in your photos. Green and luscious!
That is a beautiful top!! The colors are so vibrant - and just fit together so well!!
ReplyDeleteLove your BB, a delightful mix of colours! (only just stumbled across this post, late to the party!)
