Squirrely Temptations, Stitchy Purchases, Special Summer Guest

We had a terrific rain, thunder and lightening storm on Wednesday, breaking the drought. It didn't rain nearly enough though. And the heat remained steady throughout, no cool down at all. But then on Thursday, it dropped down to the mid 20's and it felt heavenly outside.

Late season perennial flowers are in bloom...the pink and white hardy Phlox...If I had my time back, I would have planted many more of these to have more bright flowers to enjoy after all the lilies die off.

I found an unusual little creature on the veranda one morning...sadly dead. I wanted to show you and Tony thought it might be upsetting to some, but I think you can handle it. It is a Star Nosed Mole and I'd never seen one before and was fascinated. I took the time to study its very special front claws and, of course, those tentacles. Other than mussed up fur, it didn't have a mark on it so may have died of fright like the groundhogs do. Yes, that is a real thing for certain prey animals...fatal stress response to extreme fear. Poor things!
Okay forget about that now and look at this. Grandson Robbie, the bass fisherman. He stayed most of the week with us which was awesome. What a wonderful energy kids bring to a house!
Having an almost 12 year old here certainly livened us up, a much needed thing, let me tell you. While the heat slowed us down, he and I got some outside chores done. He also took over the ball throwing for the dogs and helped me move some boxes/furniture around. We worked around his 2 hour a day hockey camp. He was off to the links to play golf with his dad (he did a golf camp earlier this summer and loved it) the day he went home. He's a busy guy so we were very happy he could fit us in!

On the summer stitching front...Baskets Love is a flimsy. I'll show a photo next time. I've sewn another row of Propeller blocks...would like one more row to finish that project. I've finished the alphabet on G. Leger 1898 and have the recommended threads for the pear all ready to go. This photo was taken outside with sun dappling through the trees which is nice but sorry it remains unpressed. I don't like doing that till the end as it squashes the threads.
Okay now to new squirrely temptations I mentioned in the title... Did you see the Bonnie Hunter QAL shared by Frederique in her Stitch Along Section? Bonnie's QAL is called Leaders and Enders QAL and her special 4 patch version features pinks and golds. Oh my, I think I fell in love a little bit.

And another quilt I've ogled and loved for a few years and appears to continue my love of blades/moving things these days is Cordelia's Spinning Wheel Quilt from Bridgit Giblin. I finally was able to purchase a PDF pattern from Bridgit's site. I'm tired of working through the scrap bins and wonder what fabrics I would have in the stash to pull this one off...seems like a lot of low volume prints. More research is needed and a deep dive into the cupboards too. This photo doesn't do the quilt justice.

And this marvelous third thing turned my head too. I know many of you share my love of embroidery, especially redwork, and have stitched Kathy Schmidt's sweet designs too. Kathy is offering a Merry Minis Workshop where she has a joint offering of PDF's of 100 new designs plus access to many video tutorials for a year for one very reasonable price. These are little and would stitch up fast and I love the novel ways to finish them in this particular program. A Link is there to check it out.

And I gave in to one temptation...There have been wonderful sales online and I did order a cross stitch pattern from 123Stitch.  It is Lila's Studio Peace on Earth, a winter quaker sampler. Yes, I can't seem to get enough of quakers! I love how the letters of winter are scattered about as well as the woodland animals that are also here and there. I started eyeing this pattern back during the pandemic and decided I would buy it now to mark my upcoming birthday.

I had to use their excellent personal service to help me figure out which of the many, many 32 count fabrics in the right size would work for this project. I have a fear of stitching away and then realizing the fabric isn't big enough for the design. Dylan responded right away and within a minute or so returned with that information as well as fabric suggestions for this pattern...very helpful. And per Dylan's suggestion I bought the 32 count light Mocha Belfast Linen which is very close to the  soft camel colour of Lila's finished project.
I sincerely believe we, who have many hobbies in older age, are blessed!

But I've also got the mundane to do... notably laundry which means up and down a few flights of stairs which I don't mind...keeps the legs moving. Especially since I haven't been swimming as much lately...the pool water was actually hot, not at all refreshing and breathing deeply of humid air is not something I want to be doing. (Though I do wonder if such is good for the sinuses.) And I'm also missing getting out on some of the wonderful trails in this area. I'm not exaggerating when I say most of this summer has been unpleasant outside and not at all good exercise weather. And like the horrible dreadful forest fires still raging around the world, there continues to be a warning in place for Ontario. It's a genuine concern for us here smack dab in the middle of our woods and is why the original builders put the metal roofs on all the buildings.

Okay enough meandering. I've got to get on with the day. Two dogs here wanting a walk about but I'll put the laundry in first so it can swish away while I do that. Always have loved double dutying...do you? Oh and Tony tried his best to get a photo of me with the two dogs one day. I'll show you the result next time.

Just lovely pink flowers--happy to hear you got rain--fingers crossed here for a decent rainfall overnight tonight...everything is so dry and dusty outside!!
Love the pink/yellow BH leader-ender blocks--I would rather take that and make it as a main project (only a lot smaller as big quilts no longer are in my wheelhouse!!).
I did see the Kathy S. redwork--oh oh so tempting. I just finished her "Daily Blessings" piece --which i thoroughly enjoyed--and need to quilt it--but how?? Through the stitching or around??? I've never quilted an embroidered piece before. Any hints??? ;)?))
Hugs for a great Sunday Julierose

I love the photo in your header this morning. So lovely and fresh. I should get some of those flowers too because it is very sad looking after the lilies are gone. I've never seen a star nosed mole. They are a very shy species. Interesting that it ended up on your veranda. The young fisherman caught a big fish. Bravo to him. You found some lovely project to keep yourself busy during this winter. Oh, yes, winter will come around again and this heat will leave us. Take care. Stay cool! ;^)

Your grandson looks so happy with his catch! Good for him. I wasn't turned off by seeing the mole but have to say that you don't want those fellows tunneling through your lawn.
All your projects look like such a joy to work on and I must admit I'm intrigued by the Merry Minis but I know I'd fall off the wagon long before I got through them all. I'm just finishing a tiny little cross stitch and have realized that if I plan on doing many more I am going to have to invest in some better lighting. Thank you for the link to 123Stitch - I'm in quest of some pearl cotton for a new fusion quilt and I had forgotten that they carry lots of options.

Gosh, those minis are super cute. . .I'm trying to pull Gertie away from looking any closer. . .What fun to have the energy of your grandson for more than an overnight! He is quite the fisherman? Does he clean his catch and did you cook it for dinner?

Lovely new header on your blog. Looks like Robbie had great fun and also helped his Nana. We’ve been thankful more than once this summer for our grandkid’s help. Of course they are adults, but have the added help of their kids, our great grands. Our Bella loves to help me dust, or clean mirrors and windows, and babysit Grandpa..( playing games with him for a couple of hours!) LOL. Oh my that Quaker is stunning.

Lots going on up your way, despite the heat. That's a handsome fish caught by a handsome grandson. The Peace on Earth cross stitch sampler is a beauty, but it would take me years (decades?) to finish a piece like that, especially since I haven't cross stitched in probably 20 years. We're due for a cooler week, so hopefully that will also come your way.

The book in your header photo caught my attention right away. My book club read it recently and I really liked it. A sad story, but Bill, the main character had such moral courage to help those girls, like someone helped him and his mother. Love seeing your flowers and projects. I have always loved Kathy Schmitz's designs, so that Merry Minis membership is calling to me! Glad you got to enjoy some time with Robbie recently, too.

Love the new header! Since it's been dry there, he might have had a no water issue as well. It is an interesting looking creature. I'm glad the heat broke and hope you get a little more rain in your area. Wildfires while living in the woods must be a scary thought. Such pretty projects you have planned. They will be fun to watch you stitch up. Enjoy your week.

Hi Jocelyn, your cross stitch alphabet piece is coming along so well. And I know all about star nose moles, belive it or not. I discovered a picture in a book when i was a schoolgirl and was fascinated with such an unusual creature. I had a baby sister 11 years younger than me, and when she was a toddler used to show her the picture and say "Mr Twentynoses is after you". I havent thought about Mr Twentynoses in decades!

Wow, your grandson caught one large bass. One of our cats years ago delivered one of those moles to our doorstep. I was not pleased in the least. I love the new cross stich you purchased.

God bless.

Your phlox are in bloom too! So pretty. Love your new cross stitch pattern. It looks like it will keep you occupied for a while. Have you thought about changing the word “men” to “all” to be more inclusive? Looks like you had fun with your grandson. That’s a big fish he caught! Take care. Gail

What a treasure of photos to tempt me... I love having flowers but hate gardening. So, I'm thinking perennials would work for me... if I can find them as plants.... Thanks for the phlox suggestion. And, the info about Bonnie's leader/ender challenge. Never heard of fatal stress response nor the star nosed mole... You are doing a great job of educating me! You've got a lot of wonderful plans for the future. I think stitching/quilting/knitting whatever keeps our brains engaged and definitely helps to keep us going. We actually work out at a local gym -- I only walk but I definitely get it done!

Definitely enough to keep you busy! A few friends of mine have been tempted by the Kathy S project too. I am trying not to start new things....not sure that will work!

That poor little mole, wonder what scared him. :( I'm glad you had a break from the heat, it gives us hope, right? Robbie sure is a cute kid and sounds like such a neat guy. Is Petey living with you now? Seems like he has been there awhile, and I'm sure you explained it but I forgot. Love all the projects, especially your sampler, so pretty.

Jocelyn, I love your new blog photo! The alphabet is lovely. Who would ever think there are so many quilt alongs!!!!!! My goodness! Tell Tony that I was not alarmed at the photo of the little creature. Do you see many of those little animals at your house? Heat is always the name of the game here in central Texas in August. We’ve been blessed that it has not been a hot as it usually is! We even might have rain later in the week! I love the Peace On Earth pattern! I have looked longingly at it several times. I do like 123 Stitch. I order from them a lot. I like their charts of floss conversions and linen needs. Carol in Texas

Your phlox is so pretty! We've been having a cool stretch of weather and it feels so good! What lovely projects you have on your blog. I like the leader and ender as well as the spinning wheel quilt. Your alphabet looks great! And I love the sampler! There just isn't enough time to make everything. Too bad!!!

we have moles too and now and then we will see a dead one that a cat will have dropped on our porch for us - I guess they think they are leaving a present - it is interesting as the first time I saw one I had no clue what it was - the paddle shaped feet are weird.

Your grandson is quite a fisherman. I am so glad to hear that you all got to spend time together. You are so right- having the grandchildren around certainly livens things up. What an unusual little mole. Do they cause much damage to your yard? Have a wonderful week, Jocelyn. Love your new header photo.
