All quiet just now here at the Wooden House. Morning chores all done including the best and most important one- a big walk about with Ned and Petey. Heavy rain showers are forecast for most of the rest of the day which are much welcomed. It felt marvelous outside in the much cooler temperatures. Even the dogs were friskier. Ned especially doesn't like heat which may have something to do with his very dark brown coat.
Here is a side view of the overgrown Hydrangeas outside my sewing room windows with Petey taking his morning sniffs. These bushes are so pretty I hate to trim them down though it might be better for them if I did. I usually do some cutting after all the blooms have died but I am a hesitant trimmer.
They are changing colour and turning pink due to the cooler temperatures. A sure sign the season is changing. And here is a close up of one of my Great Mulleins just coming into bloom. I have four tall, very ungainly Mulleins in the garden this year and, though ugly like the Thistles, I let them grow.
Many birds and insects get sustenance from Mulleins. Three Red-breasted Nuthatches have been pecking at the one in the front garden. You can see how much this stalk has been pecked at.
And this disheveled looking Downy Woodpecker has been here a lot too. Mulleins can be a medicinal plant for humans too.

Are you particular about the mug you use? I have smaller ones more suited to specialty teas like my peppermint and I own much larger ones for coffee say or my regular tea. I like to have enough cups so I can pick and choose and suit to the season even. This is something Hubby just doesn't get. In fact, it baffles him... he will stand in front of my cobbled together -at least half are thrift store finds- mug collection and shake his head. Anybody else feel like the cup you drink from is somehow important?
I remembered to grab a photo of my birthday cake. The marshmallow frosting was so good. The recipe is Rock Recipe's one bowl
Black and White Cake with fluffy marshmallow frosting...yum!
I'm reading an ebook right now. Though I can get ebooks from both libraries I joined, it seems to slip my mind that I can do so. Or maybe I'm a bit torn about adding more screen time to my day or it could be after all these years, I'm still addicted to paper. But whenever I do check out an ebook, I marvel at the speed of delivery and convenience. I don't have to leave the house and can even borrow books from my bed if I want to. I'm reading
East of the Mountains by David Guterson and enjoying the beautiful writing. I've set my ipad to a special reading nighttime mode that's easier on the eyes. This book was made into a movie by the same name and starring Tom Skerritt. I'm going to look for it.

I have the wonky partly hand sewn Propeller quilt top done. It measures 50 in x 50 in and I liked this slightly stained glass look of it outside.
After much looking and mulling over- no gnashing of teeth thankfully, I settled on a fabric from my man's shirt collection to use for borders. Btw, you can get from 2 to 4 fat quarters of fabric from a man's shirt depending on the size it is. I always start my thrift store search in the XXL section.
It echoes the pattern and in a neutral very dark grey, works okay with the colourful blocks. It looks busy up close but isn't really in the big picture. It's looking much darker in this photo than it is.
I am now stitching the pear on my G. Leger 1898 project. Panicked a little about the called for yellow thread as it just didn't show up against my fabric. I could have proceeded but using a colour you'd have to strain your eyes to see just doesn't make sense to me. I had to search in my box of Mom's embroidery thread leftovers to find a shade that was a tad more colourful to suit.
A couple of points about this photo above. It shows the slightly peachy/golden mottling in the fabric which has been hard to catch in photos; this provides a little more interest in blank areas of a design. And the quilted mat there shows my hand stitches from four or five years ago?. I'm thinking my stitching is not improving with age. I must do a comparison with how they look on the mat I'm presently quilting. Or perhaps not...
So are you stitching or starting to think about stitching leaves, pumpkins, Halloween? How we love all the good and wonderful things each new season brings us!

I've noticed that the hyrangea's are extra spectacular this year. I guess they must like heat and dry conditions.
Your propeller quilt looks so pretty and you're right in thinking it looks like stained glass.
You hydrangea is so pretty. It looks a lot like mine. I've learned they are pretty hardy and can take a heavy pruning in the right time of year. My strawberry shake and little limes call for pruning in late winter or early spring. I've never seen Great Mulleins but how fun they attract such pretty birds. Happy Birthday! Your cake looks delish. Love the Propeller quilt, too. I like the way the pattern in the border fabric is similar to the blocks.
Your propeller quilt is so lovely--it does look like stained glass in that light!! ;)))
My hydrangeas are turning pink-ey tinged too--we've had a short spell of colder days and nights so I guess that is why...i hope to harvest some smaller flower heads and dry them for a Winter bouquet...
I finally put a border on my Itsy-Bitsy Spider piece--and will be taking a bit of a respite as my shoulders and hands asked me to!! :)))) hugs Julierose
Yes, your propeller quilt is a winner. I've never thought of looking for men's shirts as quilting fabric. But I do often go to the charity shops to look for duvet covers and sheets to use for backing on my kids donation quilts.
Your hydrangea is just gorgeous, Jocelyn! And so interesting to know about the birds liking the mullein - you got some great photos of them. I am particular about my mugs, too. I like to change them out depending on the color I want or the season we're in. Yummy cake for your birthday! And your wonky propellers top looks great!
I too have a variety of coffee mugs, my favorites come and go - I mainly like to use small mugs - when we travel I almost always find a pottery store of hand made products and pick out a new one. I don't toss them until they get a crack or chip in them and even then if it is just a crack that doesn't show I might just move it to a shelf for decoration. Glad you got in a walk before the rain.
And I though my idea of my favourite coffee mug was odd!!! I have all white cups and mugs, and from the 5 different styles, there is one I prefer, sadly some have been chipped or broken, from a set of 6 plus a wonderful bonus find at the op shop of 4 more, I am down to THREE !!! Woe betide anyone who chips one of these, as that style has been discontinued , Op shop finds are still one of my favourite shop bargains. Love those huge flowers. Does the Mullein smell??
I have my favourite cup for tea too…you are not alone in this! Your hydrangeas are beautiful! Lovely to see all the birds visiting your garden. We have had lots of different birds and butterflies in our gardens this summer. You found the perfect fabric for your border on the propeller quilt. The yellow you chose shows up nicely on the background material of your cross stitch project. Hello to Tony, Ned and Petey!
I love your q
I love your quilt top! Sorry about above but hit the wrong button. Both my husband and I are picky about our mugs. Coffee is important and so is the mug! Love seeing the pups and glad it is cooler for all of us (and the dogs are too). Have a great weekend!
I am planning to add a hydrangea to my garden next year. And my hubby uses the same mug day after day for 10 years! I love to switch it up too.
Beautiful blog
Please read my post
This was a very nice post! I think the windmill top is really pretty! Great job on the stitching! Between my eyes and surgery on my rt thumb and forefinger, my hand stitching days are doomed! I will appreciate the work of others!
I love these peeks at your home, it is such an inviting, lovely space, inside and out. I am also a hesitant trimmer. My husband has always been the mad trimmer, much to my dismay, but even he is toning it down a bit in our old age - lol! Is Petey with you for always now? YES I am particular about my coffee mug as well as my winter tea mug! I find thrift store mugs very hard to resist. If we ever have a larger kitchen or one that has more open storage, you will find a big collection of cups and mugs. Oh that cake - yum. Your daughter is just so talented. Your propeller quilt is stunning!
Your hydrangea blooms are magnificent! Yum for the cake and happy birthday! I like your propeller top. I'm glad you were able to thrift so much fabric from a man's shirt to be able to make the borders! I have a series of "special" cups. I totally get what you wrote!
What a lovely visit! Glad the boys are enjoying the cooler weather for the morning walks. Your flowers are beautiful. I too have certain mugs (and a mug collection that drives hubby nuts!) for certain things. Seasons matter as does the liquid! Hot cocoa in a smaller one, coffee in my MSQC ones now, tea - if I'm sick in the pink quilted one. I thought I was the only one who does that! Your quilts are beautiful. Enjoy your weekend.
I LOPPED my hydrangeas because it was so straggly looking. Took a year to recover from that, but it looks so much better now! So don't be afraid to hack it if need be. LOL - mugs. Certain teas go in certain mugs (as long as it's clean and available). I have one that is not particularly pretty, but it has a shape that feels good to hold. So it's a tactile, color, volume, design combination that makes me pick a mug. That cake looks delicious. Happy Birthday!
What a lovely, rich post. Your quilting is wonderful.
The house and garden, lovely.
Great find on the border fabric for the propeller quilt. Your hydrangea looks lovely - yes it probably does improve with a prunt (at the right time).
Happy belated birthday!
Lovely post today! I enjoy the pinky color changes on the white hydrangeas this time of year and yours is spectacular. I have a favorite unique curvy shaped mug that Edgecomb Pottery in Maine makes and have 4 of them, each a different color, one for each season!! Don’t bother worrying about your stitches - just enjoy the process!
Your garden looks lovely, and I love these birds! I have a bunch of mugs too, but I only really use two at a time. I have a large one on my desk at work, and another one that I really like at home, which is handmade and was given to me when I moved. Your birthday cake looks yummy, happy birthday ;))
Your Propeller quilt top looks beautiful, and the new border is perfect. Nice pattern on the shirt! Thank you for sharing your work in progress and linking up.
It also feels like fall here in New England. I think the whole month of August was much cooler than expected. Your home and the grounds always look so nice. I wish I could have had a piece of that birthday cake! Looks so good! Your propeller quilt looks great! I would never have thought of using men's shirts for quilting. I'll have to change my perspective!!
Lovely goldenrod (wild) next to the hydrangea (cultivated) -- nice juxtaposition. I recent learned (or was reminded) that goldenrod is a good dye plant. I am trying to be less obsessive about the mug I take off the shelf each morning. My favorite now came from Mt. Vernon and has a quotation by George Washington: "A sensible woman can never be happy with a fool." ........ I like your propeller/windmill quilt! (I prefer print to ebooks, for sure.)
Happy belated birthday! The quilt top is really lovely - and reminds me there is a set of those blocks waiting in my closet to become a quilt. Yes - I definitely have my favorite mugs. My cabinet also holds a collection of mugs from places I've visited or mugs that were gifts.
Your hydrangea is absolutely gorgeous! Those are my favorite flowers next to roses! Happy belated birthday! Your cake sounds delicious! I do tend to gravitate to one coffee mug, but I'll change it out as we get into the Christmas season! Thanks for sharing with us at Monday Musings.
PS: Love your quilt. It really does have a stained glass look outside!

I have just learned about the medicinal purposes of mulleins a couple of days ago.
Love the propeller quilt.
God bless.
