Colours of Fall, Embroidery, Old Hangings and Gingerbread in the White House

The light is changing just as I know the transitioning to another season is happening all around me. And it's become one of the warmest Octobers on record so the days have been pleasantly warm with lots of sunshine. There was a noticeable absence of rain till yesterday when it poured steadily all day. Oh my, the colours though, are so wonderful. I brought in these leaves to show Tony who is not walking the back woods like he used to. But he has started to take a brief walk with the dogs late afternoon and so far it feels fine which is a good thing. Interesting patterns here as green fades and yellow dominates.

Still flowery brights to be seen under your feet here too. This is a wild one, perhaps one of the Stork's Bills.
I was busy inside and out last weekend. I used my battery operated hand trimmer thingy to do trimming around the garden areas. The Gorilla cart sure comes in handy too.
That tool makes the job easier for those branches and stems that are a little too thick for hand shears. But I don't trust myself completely with it as it's a bit heavy/awkward and noisy too so it's not a tool I enjoy using. But it gets the job done.

I finished Melisa's cute Autumn Saltbox House pumpkin.
And I'm going to try to show the colour of the house, a mossy green, which is not showing in any of the photos. I'm going to find a bead for the door handle.
Kathleen Tracy is running a fall mini quilt SAL called Darting Birds. The pattern is free- links are here at A Sentimental Quilter. I came across it when searching for another pattern.
It reminded me I completed one of Kathleen's SAL's years back so I dug it out and put it on the wall.
I've always wanted to stitch one of her very sweet thimble quilts. What a great way to use scraps! And there's something so attractive about that particular blue with browns, isn't there.

HERE is the link to the Thimble pattern at Kathleen's Etsy Shop. What a boon PDF's are for us international stitchers!

Here is what Simone at Soedidee  says..."a SAL is more than just a pattern-it's a creative journey you share with others." Simone is running a 2026 Cross stitch Anniversary SAL to begin January 3. I just looked through her lovely Autumn patterns section...with a little trepidation I might add. I don't need any more inspiration right now. :) Simone is in the Netherlands, btw.

Kate at Life in Pieces shared a beautiful embroidered piece featuring cross stitched butterflies. What intrigued me was it is a stamped piece. I haven't seen such in a very long time. Have you?

Last week LeeAnna at Not Afraid of Color was talking about gingerbread. I love ginger, drink ginger and lemon tea and buy the crystalized ginger to also use in tea sometimes. I have those ginger candies called GinGins in the car for Tony in case he feels a bit hypoglycemic. I always baked gingerbread cookies especially for Christmas in the old days. And Saturday evening supper growing up was pea soup and gingerbread cake with a custard sauce for dessert.

And of course, the US White House has a famous sweet tradition of displaying a Christmas gingerbread house each year. Here is the 2024 one with the theme " A Season of Peace and Light". HERE at the White House Historical Association you can read more about their gingerbread traditions down through the years. I love learning about that stuff.

I wonder what the theme will be this year.
And on that sweet note, I'll end this post. Hope your week is going well with perhaps something sweet in it too!

the golden leafs look good we have very little fall color - no rain for awhile other than a few drops now and then so it is kind of dry here. I like gingerbread but make it rarely. Heaven knows what the gingerbread house will look like this year at the white house - he will probably ask for maga hats decorating it or maybe that will be a xmas tree with little red hats all over the place?

Ditto to Karen, I'm sure MAGA will be there somewhere. Those leaves, I could see a wall hanging with applique on it.Have you ever taken a photo, printed it onto fabric?A short walk in the trees is good value, far better than on our street keeping a watchful eye for dogs not on leads!!!

We got warmer today so I did a small walk outside while waiting for my squash to soften. I walked up and down the back alley. Lots of walking in the house though as I was washing blankets to get ready for winter.

God bless.

I always love to see the autumn leaves at the beginning of fall. These are quite pretty. It just warms my heart to see your salt box embroidery, Jocelyn. I am so very touched and honored that you stitched it. This is the 1st one that I have seen. You certainly brought a smile to my day. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Hugs.

Those yellow leaves are gorgeous, and I'm glad Tony is doing a late afternoon walk with the dogs. That SAL wall quilt is gorgeous! No I don't see stamped embroidery anymore, and I miss them. I like ginger - cookies, cakes, you name it. Last week I made a pumpkin gingerbread that was delicious.
I feel a bit differently than my fellow bloggers about the Christmas decorations in the White House this year. The First Lady sets the theme, and she is a very thoughtful, warm, and creative person who will have a beautiful White House - I look forward to it.

Our October was warm until last night. We've finally entered fall temperatures. I wish we had a list of the SAL and QAL out there. I always find them too late!!

I find your posts so relaxing, as if I've done all that work to relax.

Neat leaves. Pretty flower. I like your pumpkin. Gingerbread houses can be so impressive. That white house is impressive.

I love those leaves that are partly gold and partly green! I am amazed to still have zinnias blooming. Sweet embroidered salt box house and your star quilt with the flowers in the center is a beauty, too!

I love those leaves and that embroidery! The bead will be perfect for the door knob. Love also the wall hanging you made. So glad you got some rain! Did you ever have lemon sauce with your gingerbread? My friend shared that with me (it's apparently a New England favorite) and it was very good.

things are finally changing up here in Southern Ontario. We had frost two mornings in a row, so that leaves are changing and starting to fall. Love this time of year

As a kid, we had popular trees in our yard. I haven't seen one though in many years. Seeing those leaves brought back lots of memories! Your saltbox house is a cutie!

That wall hanging you showed is sweet. And I agree on the thoughts of a SAL... It is a journey together. :) Thank you for sharing in Sew & Tell.

I like the sew-along sentiment - taking the same journey but with other people is what makes it extra fun.

The tree is beautiful! Replace the ice rink with a wrestling ring and add lots of red hats and bam the Xmas gingerbread white house. Love your hedge trimmers! I am all about making life easier with a power tool!

Nice that you got some rain - really wish we would. Drove by a couple farm ponds this afternoon and they're practically dry. I don't know how the farmers will have enough water for their cattle this winter.
Glad Tony is feeling up to doing some short walks.

Lovely gold and green leaves. I just love fall colors and am still waiting for the majority of ours to turn. It is late this year, much like yours. And I love your Pinker and Punkin stitching. She has such nice little projects.
