The garden and outside in general does call to me these summer days which answers LeeAnna's at
Not Afraid of Color question of hammock or digging when it comes to gardens. I get up close with my flowers as I do a little weeding almost every day. There are many beds here and there is usually a point each summer where they "get away from me". I'll start out with them very trimmed but mid way, the growth takes over, especially in the heat, and I will admit it all becomes unmanageable. But since it's just us looking at it, I don't really mind. I also enjoy veranda sitting many days as well. Below is a very hot Ned in the back yard. We have had heat wave warnings and high humidity both of which are hard on dogs. Those are the three dead trees on the list to be cut down this summer, before an ice storm takes them down.

Did I hear correctly that so many of you truly think I should finish the quilt top I shared in the last post? It's not that large so I think I could manage it. I'm giving it a good think. But I really need to get into the closet in the old sewing room and see if I have batting of any sort. I don't know why that sounds like such a big deal when it's just down the hall....
I'm making progress on my embroidery Floralies piece...this part involved filling in a few satin stitch areas. I love working on this.
With not enough purple to participate in another RSC month...that's two in a row, I picked up my Propeller blocks to work on. SO how did I get started with these???? Squirrel Alert!
Back in February I'd seen Samelia's Mum hand stitch a version of a propeller block that I loved. She's finished her quilt and you can see her very colourful start HERE. I think she used Jen Kingwell's pattern. And that led me to search in Karen's, Quilts, etc. archives to find that she had stitched a Retro Air Ship Propeller quilt...to see her pretty blocks go HERE. Just gorgeous!
Some propeller patterns involved adding more blocks inside the block like this one free here at Quilting Daily... But I wanted/needed something simple. While combing through so many scraps looking for blues to make strings, I realized I had scrap pieces that were just large enough to make four propellers. So I made my own template with longer propellers and started a rather wonky version of a propeller quilt. Each of the small four blocks is being stitched by hand and then joined on machine. I notice that last bit is speeding these up which is a good thing. Here are some of the blocks I've made to give you an idea of what I'm talking about. I'm trying for colourful here and it's nice not to be working with all blues plus a real bonus is using up more of those pesky smallish scraps. But I've just this minute realized I may be making a version of a Windmill quilt. What do you think? Oh dear, I can't go down another rabbit's hole... A first for us here at the Wooden House! The Phoebe pair are raising a second brood in the same nest on the back of the house. What industrious little birds! Even Tony noticed their activity and wondered why they were still around. I read they can raise up to three broods a season if the nest site has been successful for them. Below is the view from my stitching chair. Their nest is on the sound box above the furthest light. Tucked away nice and safe. And they take advantage of the bird bath which is just in front of them there on the left of this photo. I make sure the water is changed and nice and cool for them.
A mosquito was buzzing around my head in the night. I slapped at it a couple times and went back to sleep. When I looked in the mirror this morning, guess what was plastered on my forehead. Tony said well, you do have a knack for getting those guys. It's good to be good at something!Thank you all for the very kind comments and emails; I'm very sentimental and often read them with a tear in my eye. I had a poster years ago that said "Life is a journey, not a destination" and I believe that. I've always been open to change and, like so many of you, loved travelling far to make a home in different places. In this blog space, while living here at the wooden house, sharing my ups and also some of my downs is important for me. Putting things into words helps make aspects of this leg of my journey more manageable for me and hearing from you with your "along the journey" stories too is also really helpful to me. So, to all of you, a huge thanks for listening, sharing, commenting...

Hi Joc,
I always read but not a big commenter. A good portion of my family lives in the brockville area so I particularly love reading about Ontario. I keep telling my husband if things get worse here, we are moving there. Anyway love the birds having little families right where you can watch them grow. Ned is a beautiful boi! My first dog on my own was a black lab named Amara, she would have been 43 this May. đ I read your mosquito story out loud to my hubs today, made him laugh out loud. Good feeling! Have a good week. Dale in Vermont
I used the same pattern that you have for the retro air ship propeller. I think I got the pattern from Rose Prairie Quilts -- Kathleen? That pattern led me to a purchase of a DVD that had over 100 free patterns from an old newspaper called The Kansas City Star. There was a DVD available some years ago that I purchased for a small amount - the patterns had been published in the newspaper once a week and quilters in the 30's & 40's would trace them out and make templates. Now of course I have no DVD in my computer and can't use them. I think Melanie has that quilt. I love your embroidery I haven't done that work in a long time but sure love it and used to do a lot of it.
I love hearing about your wildlife, including Ned! Lol! Very interesting about your phoebes. I don't believe they make their way here in Illinois. Love your propeller blocks or whatever is the "official" name. I certainly hear you about the weeds. No one really cares here either but it feels good to do a little here & there daily. Makes me feel better anyway. Wishng you (and me) some cooler weather!
I just have a small garden bed, but the weeds want to take it over, too! I need to get out and pull some more today. The Floralies embroidery is lovely! I like those propeller blocks you're making, too. And what a treat to watch the Phoebe's raise another nest full!
Just love that floral quilt-["-go on now, Jocelyn, and just pull out that batting--let it rest on the floor overnight..it'll be a start--see, this is how I talk myself into getting the layering part of quilting done--my least favorite..."] ;)))
The Air Propeller is really a neat block...great that you drafted your own!! That's talent for sure!!
I do so enjoy all your tales of daily life...thanks for sharing...
hugs, Julierose
P.S. I've had two good days in a row!! Fingers crossed...
I love reading about you and your family living at the Wooden House. Your yard always looks so inviting. I had a friend who made a quilt very similar to that propeller block. I think she said she adapter her block from a very old pattern. Your embroidery looks gorgeous! Your windmill block looks like it would be great to use up scraps. So neat that you drafted it yourself!!
Another rabbit hole to go down, why not? I rather like your windmill blocks and since you are enjoying stitching them, keep going. Your embroidery is beautiful, Jocelyn, I certainly admire it. I can only do simple stitcheries myself. I'm sitting here on Sunday morning catching up on blog reading, and Gemma has jumped up on my lap. So of course I have to sit here a while longer. She is one of those cats who thinks the world revolves around her!
Your embroidery is just gorgeous, I am afraid mine is very simple in comparison. Love the wonky propeller blades.
God bless.
Beautiful embroidery Jocelyn, and I definitely vote that the block is a propeller; windmill didnât even occur to me!
My parents just had to have five pine trees removed--nice not to have to worry about them coming down in the next storm! The Windmill blocks are fun to make--any pinwheel is really! Love your crewel stitching--gorgeous colors!!!
What a lovely garden you have ....it looks so peaceful.
Your Floralies piece is gorgeous - a lot still to do - bit so pretty.
I sympathise re the heat and humidity - I loathe it - we are currently in winter so its lovely - maximums in low to mid 20s and virtually no humidity - it doesn't last long sadly.
I hope your husband is OK...
No Purple??? I could help with that...
I do the same as you, Jocelyn - weed a little every day, but alas towards the end of summer my gardens get away from me too. Right now though I am staying on top of it. Your embroidery is looking amazing and love the quilt blocks. I had a sweet giggle over your mosquito story. I could see myself doing that. At least you got him. Hee! Hee! Hugs.
I just got back home from a week at the cottage. There were lots of mosquitoes and they loved my daughter and my husbandâŠI had only a few bites. The garden flourished while we were away and so did the weeds. I will have to get out there early one morning to weed and dead head. It sure is hot here! Thank goodness for air conditioning!
Your embroidery is gorgeous. We have had a few Robin families with nests this year. Itâs interesting to watch them grow from scrawny hatchlings to fledging birds in a few short weeks.
Wishing you a peaceful Sunday!

I can relate about the weeds taking over when I don't go out for a few days because of the heat. Weeds thrive in the heat; I don't! They might lose the battle when August cooler evenings come around. Love the Floralies project. Your stitches are so even. Just Beautiful! Propeller or Windmill: one is turn by a machine to push air, the other one is pushed by the air to turn a machine. Hey! It's your quilt, you can call it whatever you want. (That's my way of rocking the boat, lol.) Either way, "I" love your blocks. Enjoy! ;^) P.S. yes, you should finish that quilt. Having the feeling of accomplishment is way better than having the feeling of regret down the road because you didn't finish it. Take care. đ§Ą
I am LOL over your "it's just down the hall" reference to your batting supply - I get it, it IS a big deal - lol! Makes my heart happy to read about your phoebes. What is it about wildlife that gives us such joy! Your embroidery is so beautiful. I understand about weeding. When I was younger, every weed had to be pulled. Now we let our bushes get huge so you can't see any weeds that do happen to grow under them. I persuaded Hubs to let an area under one of our crape myrtles grow wild. It was a losing battle to fight the weeds that grow under the bird feeder - corn stalks and wild grass - so he just keeps it out of the yard, and it actually looks quite nice. Weeds aren't so bad after all. ;)
I agree with Julierose - grab that batting and set it on the floor to settle overnight! I just caught up on your blogs. I always love reading about your life and adventures up in Ontario. That quilt top in the last post is beautiful! So fun to watch nature and the animals as they go about their lives. Wishing you and Tony a good week.
Your embroidery is so pretty! I also try to weed a little each day, but some days Iâm too busy or too tired, and the weeds are winning the battle. I made a bunch of the propeller blocks a few years ago, but they never made it into a quilt, and now Iâm wondering what has happened to them. I think I will try and find them this week.
lol on the good shot on your forehead!
I LOVE seeing your house and grounds, and Ned, good looking sweet Ned
LeeAnna
I am amazed how much I enjoy weeding (now that I got it mostly under control). I enjoy being out with the flowers. That airship propeller looks pretty cool. I like how your embroidery is coming along. Heh - nice shot with the mosquito.
That embroidery looks so sweet. Maybe on the RSC months where you don't have much colour you could stitch a little in that colour? Just a thought. Yes, life is a journey, lets face it not many of us are in a great hurry to reach that destination.
Your embroidery is gorgeous! I love those purple bits. And how lovely to have such a good view of the birds nest from your chair. xx
Wow, your stitches are very neat, what a beautiful embroidery! Pretty and colorful propeler blocks, they look fun to make! Finishing a quilt or not is just a question of timing for me, sometimes it's the perfect day to finish one ;) Thank you for sharing your happy place and linking up!
So many lovely variations of the block, but I love what you chose. Of course I'm biased because I've made tons of those blocks over the years. In fact I have a whole stack of scrappy Windmill blocks waiting to become a quilt.
Oh my, your embroidery is beautiful. How wonderful that the birds feel safe enough to have their family where you can see. Your quilt blocks look great. Propeller or Windmill is just a name and either will make a pretty quilt
Jocelyn, your embroidery is beautiful! I am most impressed! I am more of a crossstitcherâŠâŠ..defined stitching I guess. I enjoyed seeing entries from Rose Prairie Grass and Farms. Do you guess she is still blogging? How did you get her blog? I do hope you continue your visits to your readers. I love each one! Carol in Texas
Isn't it fun down the rabbit hole? You meet the nicest people there. I enjoyed reading about the propeller block variations and I can see why you were intrigued. Speaking of which, have you seen the 150 Canadian Women project? A good example is at this blog if you can get to it ... https://www.mmmquilts.com/2023/10/150-canadian-women-quilt-finish.html
Your embroidery is gorgeous Jocelyn! I say call that what you want to call it. Whatever, I really like the bright colors and the design and look forward to seeing how it turns out. Your backyard is lovely just like it is. It's kind of like the woods behind our house. We like them natural and enjoy sitting on the porch and drinking coffee when it's not too hot and humid. Ned is like our Chloe. She comes back in after her business trips huffing and puffing, and drinking water. How fun that you have little birdies too. I do enjoy reading about your adventures. Thanks for linking up with Monday Musings!
love your new propeller / windmill blocks!! what fun to take an idea and bam!! make a block. Your backyard is very pretty - its so green - stay in and stay cool!
Your garden looks so lush and peaceful. What a lovely home you've built. Love the idea of making wonky propeller blocks! Yours are sure pretty. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.
