Walking has been a challenge here lately because of the heat. I experienced something I've never felt before while down at the pond the other day. One of those breezes that wells from the ground came up and it blew hot air at my face. So hot! The poor dogs were panting so we three just hightailed it back to the house where I'm so thankful our AC is working again...only were able to use it once last summer. The thermometer told me it was 35C which I think is like 94 F or close- you have to agree with me that is hot! Kudos to those of you who live in hot climates especially ones with humidity. Tony says I'd adjust if I had to but I'm not sure as humidity especially just makes me melt..one day last week we had 100% which doesn't sound possible. My hair has been such a mess. But that's all small stuff, every single bit of what I just wrote... enough whining, it is summer with glorious sunshine and massive beautiful growth in the gardens.
Here is something I've discovered loves the heat...the Coleus. This is one of my indoor houseplants and was in sorry shape after a long winter with little or low sun. Wish I'd taken a before photo. Here it is on summer holidays out on the back veranda and loving it. The light intensity has turned the leaves gorgeous purples.
I've been busy machine stitching more blue strings blocks. As I've said, my scraps appear to be unending...silly me, I'd thought that would be why I would have to end this project. Now I'm wondering how many blocks to make. This is 20 and I think 20 more would create a good overall design. What do you think?
And I've been matching handles to basket bottoms too and have made 15 3/4 so far for the appliqued Basket Loves project. These have been fun to hand stitch using a blanket stitch edging on the handles. Must realign that handle on the far right bottom which is unsewn. I'm now at the stage of thinking of whether or not to end the basket making part of this project. I have the appliqued border finished too for one side and have to think about the others.

So here is my new small appliance. The Kitchenarm Smart Bread Maker...
Our kitchen sink blocked up again and made a mess. But on the upside, we got to clean out the pipes like they'd never been cleaned before so maybe that will prevent this almost usual thing from happening any time soon. And an additional up side, I got to use a tip I saw on YouTube that old black tea is good for cleaning wooden floors. I made a large pot of it and used it on the floors after the spills were all cleaned up. It made the floor look very clean with a nice matte kind of finish. It's definitely so much cheaper than bought cleaners...I used 4 well steeped teabags and you would think this would be better for the environment too.
This has been a very busy appointment filled week for us with still two more to go, one with the dermatologist this afternoon to check on Tony's skin cancers, then back to the imagery clinic tomorrow for part two of his chemical nuclear stress test. Tony has a good tolerance for all this and it never affects his mood, which is a blessing.
I hope you are staying cool or warm wherever you are in this big world of ours!
Do check out Not Afraid of Color where folks are also sharing their likes this week. Sharing this post with wonderful linky parties at The Inquiring Quilter, Alycia Quilts, Quilt Schmilt, The Quiltery, Small Quilts and Doll Quilts and Creations Art Whatever.

wow your temperature is like here in Arkansas it has been in the 90's for about a week and only cools off to 76 at night - I know what you mean about the hot breezes. I can't even sit out on the porch to relax after 10 AM it gets too hot - I have a coleus the same colors as yours but haven't needed to pinch back yet - I imagine it will all of a sudden grow - I need to put it in a larger pot it is pot bound. I love bread machines even if i don't use it weekly it comes in so handy it was a gift but if it stops working I will get another.
Your string quilt has such a nice variety of blues! There are lots of ways these blocks can be arranged. Fun to play with the layout. Our gardens are exploding with colour right now. The heat has helped them! Gail at the cozy quilter.
oh foer Pete's sake, I read "imaginary clinic" and thought that's new
crikey
the bread machine looks compact, one of the things I disliked about my old one was how cumbersome it was. Heat... we had about 10 days of 100 or nearly so. It was hell on earth. Then a storm brought more normal Colorado temps the last 3 days... it's headed back to hot though.
no chance of volcano activity near you is there? sheesh hot air bursting out of hot air, dogs will just find shade and lie down or Milo used to.... the immovable dog... making getting back home to AC twice as hard! lol
LeeAnna
Count me in when you make that sourdough bread. Love it toasted with a pat of butter. Better make it 2 slices as Mom loves it too! Lol! Speaking of love, I used to follow Norma on her blog and I have several of her patterns. She has such terrific style and color. Last I heard she had back problems and I haven't heard any more. I guess the surgery either wasn't successful or it's as good as it gets and she's still in too much pain to continue her Timeless Traditions. Miss her so much. With the heat and wanting to walk, don't forget to drink your water. Ned probably appreciates his water dish too!
i really like your string blocks and if 20 more isn't a hardship, would make a lovely quilt...and the baskets are perfect i think...a little primitive as your friend reminded you...they look fine to me...ach 95 here again today...but they are saying 70s tomorrow...a break albeit only one day
We always seem to have never ending scraps. You are using yours up in a great way.
I am finally seeing some headway in the garden. Heat and rain were definitely a big part of getting things growing.
God bless.
You can complain all you want about heat and humidity to me, Jocelyn - I don't like it either. I think 94 must be a really high temp for you up there. Your coleus does look lovely and thriving! The string blocks are going to make a great quilt, and the baskets, too. And a smart bread machine - wow! Hope it makes you some yummy loaves!
Happy plant! I agree - 20 more string blocks would look great! One of these days I'll make oatcakes. Good luck with Tony's tests. Our temp dropped today - I hope you're cooler, too!
Your coleus looks fabulous, Jocelyn. It is one of my favorite plants as well. Surprisingly , I have some baby colelus that sprang up in the greenhouse ground. I was surprised. I will be transplanting them soon. Your string blocks look wonderful. Have a blessed weekend.
Your string blocks look great! I really like them. Your coleus looks very healthy now. Your basket blocks look very nice as well. We had a hot spell and now it's very cool. This weather is crazy!!
That is a pretty coleus. They are very easy to root in water, in case you want to start a few more. Your strings and baskets are coming along. We were 93F on Tues, 86F yesterday and today only 69F. It was wonderful, I got to cool off the inside of the house which was 89F the last two days. Fortunately I have a new window AC unit for the bedroom, so I could sleep at night. I think the heat is coming back in a few days. I've never had a bread machine and don't think it would be worth it now with just me to feed.
Pat
We have had humidity, heat and yesterday cooler with lots of rain. My hair is a mess too! We love the bread machine, hubby likes to use it:) Love your string quilt, those strings never seem to get used up do they!
Oh your Coleus is gorgeous! Glad it got outside to flourish. Yikes on the blast of heat. I've been walking in our pool vs. on land. It's in the 90's here in Ohio. Your string blocks are pretty.
Whining is allowed in summertime Jocelyn, and my husband does a fair amount of it in wintertime, so we balance each other out - lol! Sorry you've had it though, I don't think you adjust to it when you've been in a colder climate (colder than mine for sure) all your life. Oh your Coleus is spectacular! Yes they do love heat and sun, as long as they are well watered. I get a kick out of seeing them go from droop to perk with a drink of water. Your strings are so pretty. Those oatcakes look yummy, I'd add some cinnamon to mine and have them with hot tea.
Lovely string blocks. The combo of blue and yellow is so cheery. I love the peek into your garden. Looks so lush and inviting. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

I would have melted too in those temperatures! Whine away!!! Your Coleus has such beautiful colors. I will try the oatcake recipe. Last week, on a whim, I baked the depression chocolate cake. My granddaughter inspired me to bake a two layer cake with frosting. I think the last time I baked a layer cake was about a decade ago for my husband's birthday. Frosting is too sweet for me so I prefer sheet cakes. . .At any rate, that cake was delicious and it freezes well. I cut it into slices and froze two slices into packages so we can have a treat! Keep stitching those string blocks. Twenty more will make an awesome top!
It's been awful. These bread machines are terrific, though.
I love your blue string blocks and if you have enough 'bits' I think you should carry on and make a full-sized quilt. It's been hot here too but yesterday and, so far, today are much cooler. Even had to resort to putting on long pants and a sweater when we went out yesterday.
Those oatcakes look great - I love a plain biscuit so these might just have to be added to the RC's list of things to make.
Thanks for visiting my blog and commenting!!! I love the string blocks in blue/yellow--just gorgeous! I just pinched my coleus today--it does love the heat but I didn't last long! lol
I love those fun string blocks! Sorry to hear you got the horrible heat wave up there as well. I hope you are getting some of the cooler air I am enjoying in Vermont. Those oat cakes look yummy.
This heat has been crazy for sure! From what I've heard, those that live in this kind of heat year round basically also mostly stay inside in the AC too and no wonder. Your Coleus look so beautiful! I finally planted some out and they have been thriving too. I had even found a bitty small one buried when I turned the soil of my planter in prep for putting in newly purchased plants and even the buried one has revived and is putting on more leaves. Thanks for sharing both the video and the oatcakes recipe, I look forward to checking both of those out.
Hi Jocelyn it sounds like Murphy’s Law was haunting you for a while! On the upside your coleus, string blocks and basket blocks are all lovely. Here in BC we’ve only had a couple of over 30 days so far this year and we’ve been getting some rain. It’s making me do a happy dance since we’ve had our share of wildfire seasons thes past years. Got the bug out bags packed in case though. Thank you for sharing on ToDo Tuesday. Hugs and wishes for another week of fun and some more bearable weather. Humidity shouldn’t bother you being from the Rock. At least my DH says it shouldn’t since that where his family is from 😁 Carol
You can whine all you want about the temperature or the humidity...I'll join you. It's suppose to be 90˚ here today but the feels like temp should be 100˚ -- in other high dew point/ humidity. We ran a few errands and I'm happy to remain in my basement studio! Your new bread machine looks sleeker than mine... it takes up too much space and I don't use it often...
oh definitely - another 20 string blocks ! I love them!! and yes -94 is hot- i don't think you adjust!!
I do love your string quilt/blocks! And those basket blocks are adorable!!! How's the bread machine working out? Looks interesting!!!
