November Colours, Red Blackbird House, Interesting Podcasts

There are heavy frosts most mornings now and we have our first snowstorm warning for today. Who knows, perhaps it won't materialize. But it has snowed a tiny bit as I found out one very early morning out with the dogs. So far it has been melting. This morning most of the pond had frozen over, just a light skimming though. Home we would say it "caught over".

I noticed how much colour is standing out in the landscape and still to be enjoyed before the white blankets everything. Here are my latest photos and these may be my last chance to capture them.

The deep green Hostas have evolved into beautiful yellows/greens with murky browns and a hint of purple.  How many times do I have to tell my assistant to keep his nose out of my pictures!

Oranges glimpsed on the back of the side lawn meadow turned out to be the Smoke Tree's final colour change; beautiful right to the end.
And these eye catching cherry red berries below stood out against the November ground which is still sporting the odd bit of orange and green too.
I think they are DMC 321, one of the Christmas colours.

These are not wild but so pretty. I took this photo recently of a huge planter overflowing with Begonia blooms outside the accountant's office. They are still okay because they're being covered at night. Who knew Begonias were so hardy!
Inside I'm continuing the hand quilting on the little Four Pumpkin piece. For this one, I'm stitching lines in the pumpkins first. I'd thought of using a coloured thread but then I changed to a neutral that won't show up as much if I wobble a bit.
I am having a good time in the sewing room too working on the Blackbird Designs piece. I have zeroxed my patterns for the Christmas tabletop, cut them out, labelled and sorted them. I started with the Red House. The fun part was going through my stash to find fabrics that would suit this design. The makers had chosen a deep red/burgundy which is rather large at 20 x 21 inches. As it turned out I didn't have any deep red of that size and had to sew two pieces together. I also don't have much brown but luckily enough so the roof could be one piece as featured.
That background fabric has been in my stash for a long time-I've looked at it often and always put it back on the shelf. I love the leafy design and happy now to be using it in this project.  I love house quilts and would like to make another one with just houses one of these days. But which pattern to choose, there are so many!

LeeAnna at Not Afraid of Color's question this week had to do with which podcasts we enjoy. Being a monarchist, I listen to many of the royal pundits and youtube royal experts. For the record I was always appalled by Prince Andrew's behaviour and so glad the titles have been stripped. For general health, I listen to many podcasts but I'll mention just one- Diary of a Ceo where Steven interviews all the doctors/experts who have ideas about how to improve our physical and mental health. These include topics such as fasting, vitamins, exercising, even whether you should be tongue scraping regularly. I find this talk interesting and I learn so much. Since I'm a true crime nut, I also listen to a group of those too, for entertainment. A favourite is Somebody Knows Something. I also enjoy conversations with authors and discussions around writing and listen to those. This side of technology is such a marvel and how wonderful to be living in these times with so many resources at our fingertips.

I just checked and there is still a snowfall warning for us starting around noon. And dirty old ice pellets in the mix for tomorrow...I hate ice. Oh well. I hope your forecast is so much better wherever you are. I know it's summer for some of you reading this.
I'm off to take the dogs for a walk. Take Care!

Watching your progress in the sewing room is so much fun! We had our first snow of the season here in lower Michigan...it's on the grass but melted on the roads. :)

Ugh -- looks like we are going to get really cold weather on Tuesday. Hopefully it doesn't kill off my plants. My hostas are also a golden yellow. Hope you find some stitching time among the snowflakes, if they show up! Personally, I'd be happy to have them pass me by this winter!

We got snow on Saturday, but today it should mostly melt as it's supposed to be a bit warmer. Such an interesting little red house in your project. I look forward to seeing how it all progresses.

Such pretty spots of color for you still despite it being 'stick season' as we used to call November in Vermont. We have a freeze warning for this evening, and I enjoyed my 50 F degree walk with feels like 46 this morning with the dog. Much nicer than the mid 80's we had the last week. Your pumpkin is cute and love that red fabric in your house block. Enjoy your week.

you have a lot of good color yet this fall even though you expect snow and then the snow will look pretty too. I don't really listen to pod casts but do a lot of reading of them instead of listening. Mainly news that is "maga" news, I find the behavior of many politicians disgusting as you do with the Prince Andrew - how these people can be in charge is awful. Lucky for the monarch Andrew hasn't been in charge and little chance of that. Now if we could just find out who all was in that mess and call them out for it.

I love how you pieced together the red fabrics for the house. It's going to look spectacular! I'm looking forward to seeing that pumpkin quilt arrive at the finish line. Your "nosey" assistant is adorable. Better that end in photos than the other! Lol!!! Hope your day is as wonderful as you.

It's great when the right project finally appears for the fabric that's been kicking around in your stash. :-) Love your fall colors. The winds here have stripped most things bare. Good luck with the snow!

I think you're house looks great with the two colors of red. I'm a big Blackbird Designs quilt fan and I had to go back to your previous post to see what you are making. But, you only showed the book ~ sigh. Well, I have the book you're working out of so I'll have to go downstairs to find and check in out. You can't go wrong with BB Designs, they are/were such gifted ladies. In spite of the lack of rain this past summer it has been the loveliest of autumns. Thanks for sharing your fall colors

I love seeing pictures of the beautiful area you live in. Isn't it so fun to find the perfect fabric that's been in your stash for years?? It was warm and rainy all weekend but cold weather is now moving in. I'm not looking forward to it!!

Our snow is melting right now, but overnight it will once again become ice until the sun comes out. My begonias are usually the first that a frost takes.
That two toned house is perfect. Love it.

God bless.

We had enough snow to make the ground white. Lots of the trees and bushes still have leaves so the heavy snow is making some branches bend a lot. hopefully, they will pop back up when the snow melts. I think your photography assistant has a cute nose! He adds interest to the pictures you take!
Nice new sewing project underway.

I love your winter color photos and that you named a DMC color for the berries. :D I love your assistant's nose in the photo - the snout and a wagging backside are my favorite things about dogs. I love your pond and forgot to say (on the post where you mentioned it) how happy I am that it is filled again. And is that rock ledge on your property? It's stunning!
We've only had a little taste of winter the past couple days (32° at night) but higher temps will reign for another week or 2. I need some winter! Your little house is so pretty. I have a pattern saved with houses but not sure it is the one I will use when I FINALLY make a house quilt. :)

Hi Robin, it is called the Garden House Table or Bed Runner and is on page 81. It finishes at 24 x 60 and so far, I'm enjoying it. These two didn't make complex patterns, but lovely ones.

I have been absent while en route from home to the far south. 10 days to be here after younger daughter had foot surgery. She has found that while on 2 crutches you cannot do much at all. One day in Dunedin I was so lucky to stay with a friend at Wakari, and she introduced me to the marvels of Cricut and an HTVront heat press. such fun, and I have come away with name labels all done and onto fabric.Your ice on the pond is such a good indicator of winter arriving soon.

I love your pumpkin! It is so charming and that house looks awesome! I really enjoyed your photos (before it snows). Did you actually get snow? Sending hugs!

I love your pumpkin with Blackbird Designs, it really is beautiful.

Way to solve a the problem of insufficient fabric for your red house. One of my mantras is why use one green when 40 greens will do. :)

We had snow on Sunday/Monday and today we will reach 66°!!! But I can't say that makes me mad to be back to warmer temps. LOL.

I love seeing your beautiful fall pics, Jocelyn, and your pumpkin is darling! We had some cooler weather this week for a couple of days, lows even in the 20s for us, very unusual, and then back to the 70s. I like the 70s! LOL Thanks for sharing with us at Monday Musings.

I love snow--probably because we don't get much. Like you, I hate ice! Way too slippery/scary for me. I love your red house! I thought the two colors were planned as it is a two story house so your improvisation is genius. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

Still pretty fall colours around you but like you I don't look forward to the snow. We really need some rain but it's not happening.
As for the podcast question - I don't think I've ever watched any unless taking a couple online classes count.
