I read that the last full moon of the year, called the Cold Moon, is tonight and it is going to be very special by how high in the sky it will rise. Such a height won't be seen again till 2043. It's dark here now at 5 o'clock. Yesterday I took this photo of the back yard bathed in moonlight at that time. Unfortunately, the clouds kept sailing past hiding the moon. Sometimes, clouds add much beautiful moodiness to a December winter sky but my photo didn't capture that sadly.

To celebrate December 2025, I stitched a few trees. I was going to say Christmas trees but these do not look like your typical Christmas trees. Last year, I saw Helen Philips had made a quilt she called Peppermint Trees in pinks and greens. I loved it and found the PDF download for the pattern at her Etsy Shop. These are appliqued with my usual hand stitched blanket stitch border. In an attempt to have this at least a flimsy for Christmas, I'm sewing the blocks together as I go. Here is the first four combo. This is also a super way to use up those slightly larger scraps too. One of the reasons I'm really happy to be staying with Helen's pink choice is because I bought a few yards of this pink fabric way back and it isn't the best material. It is just a tiny bit flimsy but will be perfect for a wall quilt. Yes, those were the days when I hadn't learned enough about fabric and couldn't resist a good deal either. Still can't resist a good deal.
Meanwhile, my hand quilting on Christmas Presents has been a torturous experience so far. Now that's a strong word but I am finding the handling of such a large project very challenging. I've tried it on a table, in a big hoop and now in my floor stand hoop. I can't seem to get comfortable with the stitching no matter how I've set it up. I've read that the floor hoop takes getting used to but I did quilt something else using it and I don't remember having this dilema.
And figuring out how exactly to quilt it has also been a challenge. I looked at a lot of online similar quilts to see how they were quilted. Many of those hand quilting laid outline stitches around each box and ribbon. Others used machine quilting with a loopy pattern all throughout which was pretty. So far, I've drawn a loopy doodle to use in the white ribbon parts which might be a softening kind of effect to all the straight lines in this quilt. Then maybe I'll do outline stitching for the rest of the block. Maybe I'm just not settled down enough to work on this particular slow stitching now but I'm determined to make some headway with it. I'm happy as long as I can do that.

I love this site, the Embroiderers Guild of America. The stitching is magnificent. And they have a lovely selection of free patterns you can download too. HERE is the link.
And this site is one I've returned to countless times over the years for instructions, patterns and ideas to stitch. I'm so happy to share again
the Needle 'n Thread Network. Our friend,
Mary Corbett, a lifelong embroiderer, has a wonderful page of free embroidery patterns which she keeps adding to. It is quite extensive. Also, she offers many tutorials and links.
I made raisin tea buns as my baked treat this week. I always add the raisins for Tony. They are great with a little jam and a cup of tea, of course. Good on a cold winter day, one with a blowing snow warning. Here is Rock Recipies recipe for Newfoundland Raisin Tea Buns.
I love my Morris thermos. What a beautiful shade of blue! But there are also shades of green, orange, tan and cream put together the way only Morris could. These would work well in a quilt, don't you think? It is also useful as I can fill it with tea and take it to the sewing room. Then it stays warm even if forgotten for a while which always happens.
Talking about food made me wonder how many of you know about Mrs. Brown's Kitchen. HERE is the Instagram link where I noticed that among her million followers is Kathy Schmitz which made me smile. Heather is a Newfoundlander who has been successful enough to have a cookbook published. She has a straight forward attitude, uses pretty simple ingredients, and has a way about her that makes me smile. I spent time at a thrift store recently and bought a couple of items and I'll share those next post. Something quilty and interesting came home with me. Doesn't it always!
I'm just off now to walk the dogs and will bundle up. It's -10C here in the Ottawa Valley with a brisk wind making it feel like -19C. So how's this lead up to Christmas going for you? All good I hope. Happy Shopping and Stitching too!
So wonderful to have linky parties to share this post with....Sew Can Do, Kathy's Quilts, Quilting Patchwork Applique, Days Filled With Joy, Quilting is More Fun Than Housework, Songbird Designs, Small Quilts and Doll Quilts and Alycia Quilts. Thank you all for hosting!

Phew, -19, way too cold for me, Love the " JOY" stitching and it's always a delight to read of your Op Shop goodies.,
too cold!! your raisin tea buns look good - I think those would be biscuits here - mine always turn out dry I can never get them light and fluffy
We had a warm up today, but it will be back to the freezing temperatures come tomorrow and the weekend. Love the Peppermint Trees, and thank you so much for the link to that embroidery site.
God bless.
Love your trees, Jocelyn. It's going to be a cute quilt. I'm sorry, I can't help with hand quilting using a hoop. Do you have much left to quilt? It's a beautiful quilt, I hope you don't give up and put it aside. Raisin buns look yummy. Love your thermos too, beautiful colors. -10C feels like -19C... BRRRR! That's cold! Hot, rainy and humid here, we had +32C a couple of days ago, but now the rain has cooled it down slightly.
Cold here too with the wind chill. I still like to get out for a walk each day. Cute trees! I like the way you quilted the white part of your presents quilt. I haven’t picked up my hand quilting this week. Just too busy! Take care and stay warm. Gail at the cozy quilter
I'm watching for the moon overhead at our house tonight! Those pink and green trees make a fun quilt design, Jocelyn. I can see why you were drawn to that pattern. Your tea buns do look yummy!
Love the look and idea of peppermint trees! Your Christmas Presents quilt may be challenging but it sure is pretty. Thank you for the link to Mrs Brown's Kitchen. I was a couple of her videos, and I like her and started following her! So refreshing to see someone take the time to actually scrape the can to get all the condensed milk out - so many of these Instagram folks never seem to scrape anything and it drives me crazy!
Wow! I got lost at the free embroidery site. Thanks for the link, I've signed up for the newsletter now. Your peppermint trees is very pretty and yes, should use up quite a bit of larger pieces of scraps. Keep on stitching!
Gorgeous thermos. Lovely quilt. Ever since I saw a circle quilting pattern, it has been a favorite. Helen Phillips, I have 2 or 3 of her Etsy quilt patterns to do this winter.
My goodness, that is cold, I wonder how you can bear to go outside in such temperatures. Do you have to protect the dogs feet in the cold snow? Your peppermint trees are very pretty.
I love the pink trees! I'll be checking out that embroidery site. Thanks so much for sharing. I can't to see what you bought at the thrift store. You always find the best treasures!
I stepped out back and saw the glorious full moon on Wednesday and Thursday evening. We were lucky with no clouds to cover it up. You have a lovely view with the trees and snow to bounce the light off of. Those biscuits look yummy. I love the 'Victorian' colors for Christmas. Enjoy making your pretty trees.
I can't imagine trying to hand quilt something that large (machine quilt either, come to think of it). My sewing room is just too small for something that extensive. I know it will be wonderful when you're done though, despite the trials of getting it there.
Tea Buns is a new-to-me term. Most often in our household they're called 'shortcakes'. Don't ask me why - it's just a term that's been handed down through the generations. They're good with raisins, cheese or dried cranberries.
Love your Peppermint trees. We had snow and was very Cold last week, but it got warmer and it looks like weˇre going to have a snowless Christmas .Happy stitching.Mirka
'The Presents' quilt will be gorgeous when you've finished; sorry you're having a hard time getting comfortable while working on it! The thermos is beautiful!
Jocelyn, Mrs. Brown is so much fun!!!!!! Thank you for that referral. I hope I can remember to look in on her often. I am also grateful for the mention of Helen Philipps. She used to have a blog that I followed, but when I type in her name, the latest blog entry is in 2024. Her quilting and sewing things are so charming…..very simple but just a delight. Thank you for your recommendations. Carol in Texas
Ugh - I'm sorry the quilting is being difficult. I like the loopy loops. Pretty thermos!
You are very talented 👏 ❤️ Your tea buns look delicious 😋 Your thermos is lovely.
I am most likely in the minority, but I love Winter, snow ❄️ and cold weather. 🥶 Ice, no!!! After the last two summers here in Montreal with the extreme heat 🥵 humidity and wildfires 🔥 the Winter is a refreshing change for me. I am retired and 69. I just make sure I dress warmly for the cold temperatures.
The ice makes me nervous because I don't want to risk falling.
Thankfully the city puts salt or gravel to try to prevent accidents by vehicles or falls.
I don't have talent for crafts, but I enjoy seeing the creative talent of those who do.
Dear Jocelyn, you have a lovely blog. Thank you so much for visiting me today and for your kind comment 😊 on my blog. I really appreciate it so much. It's so nice to meet you and to know that you also live in Canada.
I post on Mondays and Thursdays and I look forward to getting to know you.
That moody photo over the trees is gorgeous. Very cute trees and lovely festive hand quilting happening. Your raisin buns look delicious and I adore your William Morris thermos....so pretty. It is starting to really warm up here with regular summer thundery storms almost daily it seems on the horizon. Thanks for a lovely post.
Those peppermint trees are cuties. I like the name of the pattern and of course I LOVED reading that you were using a "bargain pink" fabric purchased long ago. I did the same and like you I still look for the bargains! Christmas preparations are underway and moving forward. I should begin the wrapping process soon. . .!!!
Your projects are lovely, and they are a very good excuse to stay inside and warm while it's so cold outside! The pink trees are cute, but I'm sorry that quilting Christmas presents is so complicated. Thank you so much for sharing and linking up.
The very same, beautiful moon has been lighting my night sky too. Yikes! Those temperatures of yours!! I simply cannot compute walking in those frigid conditions. I'd be inside, toasting before the fire, drinking hot tea from that pretty William Morris thermos of yours, enjoying stitching those peppermint trees. And, if there were a few of those delicious raisin tea buns of yours to nibble on, well, so much the better. I feel your pain re hand quilting over large quilt. 'Torturous' is the perfect description.
I really like peppermint trees in pink and green! I love doing blanket stitch but have never thought to do it around my hand appliqué. Will have to try it! Sarah quilting by the sea.
What a beautiful photo! Now I have to go out and check out the moon! Deciding on a quilting pattern can definitely be tortuous. I could piece all day, but unquilted tops create problems in my closet, so I have to do something with them! :)
Hello Jocelyn! Ironically, I just found Mrs. Brown's youtube channel. She was showing how to make Queen Anne Squares. I really liked her channel! Thanks for the tips on free embroidery patterns. I also like to go to the antique pattern library. Love the photo and saw the same moon when I was walking Lucky that night! Have a great day!
Your evening photo, with the snow on the tree limbs, is so pretty. Peppermint Tree is the perfect name for those blocks. I love the pinks and the white on white with snowflakes. I think the hand quilted loops will look great on that quilt.
I love your peppermint trees!! So pretty. I too, have purchased some of that bargain fabric before I really knew much about quilting years ago. The tea buns look delicious and I love that first photo! I really don't care for cold weather, but it's going to be below freezing most of the day tomorrow here and into the teens tomorrow night. Then we jump right back up to 60 on Wednesday! Weather is schizophrenic here in the south! Thanks for sharing with us at Monday Musings.
