I blinked and it is May now. We had one summery day amid all the coolness and it is still flirting with overnight frosts. These Daffodils always open too soon and, in their shady spot, don't get to really shine like they should which is a shame. I should move them and the bunch behind there that didn't get to open at all this year.
Yesterday, Friday, it was this temperature below when I got up and -1C with the wind gusts. It was -3C overnight so it warmed up. I've put away my heavier coats and winter boots but kept out my light quilted parka knowing full well a Canadian summer takes its' time ramping up. Someone said at least we didn't get a big snowstorm in April like we usually do. I'm waiting till all the critters crawl away from their winter hibernating spots before beginning the big garden clean up. After Victoria Day and as close to June as you can make it is the suggested time to plant here in the Ottawa Valley. But locals say after the first week in June has passed is even better as overnight frosts can be sneaky.
Steady stitching has brought What Remains is Love to this nearly finished stage now. Mom loved flowers and birds so I added extras. She also was a big dog lover so I've included a couple of them too.
I used Brenda's book for these extra little designs. I hope to include a little book motif too perhaps over on the left near the blue bird as Mom also enjoyed reading very much.
I stitched several Quarter Dresden blocks using pink backgrounds. My stack of these blocks is growing.
I'm rereading this book of Margaret's (a friend mentioned she was reading it and I remembered enjoying it so checked it out again). I'm especially interested in what she has to say about fellow female authors.
Nature pleases me, especially seeing the way May is coaxing all the wild things to do their spring thing and open up. Seeing tiny buds that contain a future leaf, flower, or maybe a branch is miraculous to me.
And I like the spring colours too like this pretty shade of green especially paired with that orange/red.
I'm glad observing these tiny things up close still hold my interest and captivate me in a special way.
I hope you are well and enjoying whatever season it is where you are. Take Care All!

Happy Monday, Jocelyn. Wonderful nature photos. Little wonders of nature captivate me as well. Your stitch looks wonderful; I think it is so sweet that you added more flowers , birds and the dogs in memory of your mom. It makes the piece even more special .
We are in Autumn down here. Your stitchery is so truly beautiful and with memories of your Mum, so much is there. In our garden we have had bearded Iris flowering, so out of season, Winter Rose or Lenten is not in flower yet but looking promising, Solomon's Seal has finished , the lilies have almost all died off, one dead Manuka was dug lout and mulched, it has gone back to live a useful life as mulch . Books, I have some from the library, and as long as I can remember books and crosswords have been in my Mum's and my life. Both my Mum and Dad had a wonderful way with words .
Beautiful stitching!! I , too, love looking for the small details in nature!
I love that you added birds and those cute dogs to your stitching - it's beautiful. I do hope you get to enjoy some spring before the heat arrives. Why can't it be longer? I've been thinking about dresses lately! I love your description, nothing sounds more comfy. I have a really hard time finding a pattern I like at a price I will pay. I wish you luck!
I have a number of such dresses. I am happy it is warm enough to wear them, today, at least. Weird cold days, though.
Summer is definitely the time for dresses and skirts. Love how cool I feel when wearing one. Your stitchery is just lovely, and the quilt blocks are coming along nicely.
God bless.
You always take the nicest pictures of your beautiful area. I love how you're adding motifs to represent your mother. I think my area is done with frost. It's been cool but today and tomorrow will heat up. I feel it's just a tease for summer as our temperatures will go down once again.
Your sampler is beautiful and I love your closeup nature photos. It really is a blessing to be able to enjoy and experience the wonder of opening buds and new growth at this time of year!
Spring green is one of my favourite colours. I love seeing the flowers and leaves emerge after the winter. Your cross stitch is lovely…so many good memories of your mom. Gail at the cozy quilter.
such a poignant and heartfelt stitchery....it is so very true....our see saw weather continues here as well...winter clothes still in closet but tote with summers sitting there open as well...today it'll be summer but only today it seems...
You piece in memory of you mom is lovely. It is so sweet to add motifs that reflect her loves. Spring here in central Texas is mostly over. We get ‘cold fronts’ that drop our daily temps and keep us cooler for a day or two. But we all know what is coming!!!!! A Texas summer!!!!!!! We’ve had blessed rains and more are predicted. My aged mower is unable to carry on this year, so I’ll have to search for someone to mow our yard and a field or two. My dear neighbor has given me a name…..hope he works out. Growing older is a daily challenge! I love your blog and look forward to each visit!
A lovely post, Jocelyn. Your sampler looks great, and I love seeing your tiny May treasures. Not many here yet. Some dandelions, I try to leave them alone for the pollinators. Enjoy your week with a lighter coat. 🥰
What a pretty sampler!
Your sampler is looking so pretty and even better that it's meaningful as well.
I always like all the varying shades of green this time of year and actually think I appreciate that just about as much as the shades of fall.
I live in dresses all summer but am finding it harder and harder to find ones that are the length I like. I'm tall and rather on the busty side so that compounds the issue. Sadly I am not comfortable sewing my own. Re the question about patterns, I would consult with Mr. Google - I often search for patterns when I put the main pattern makers into the search engine.
Your photos taken out in the fresh air are making me look so forward to my upcoming summer off. They are lovely. Outdoor time is so needed, Vitamin D and all.
Your cross stitch and dresdons are looking great. How nice to have that book with a variety of patterns where you found your dogs. I am sure your mom would appreciate them.
