Dress Shopping, Spring Delights, Stitchy Projects, That Weather Incident

My sole lilac tree is starting to sprout. It's very old and getting slower to bud every year. In fact I had thought it was done, and am delighted to see these few sprigs.

The Trout lilies have opened.
And just like that, I spy a Dandelion too.
Though cold and rainy so far, spring is moving along in our neck of the woods.

Yesterday I put all my Basket Love bits up on the back hall wall to take stock. I made note of what I need to finish the baskets and how to keep brightening the overall look...yellows seem to help. This definitely has a primitive vibe and I'm enjoying using men's shirts fabrics too.

I've sewn more of the Broken Dishes blocks to practice accuracy.
It is pleasant, stress free work in the sewing room while listening to a podcast. Sometimes I listen to Mel Robbins depending on the topic.
Anna on Quilt Roadies thanked her viewers as they were able to tell her she stored the sisters...  Kathy Schmidt and Bonnie Sullivan's patterns together in one of her Yazzii Bags. And said bag was hanging  in plain sight. Yazzii Bags are really neat, btw; they are so pretty and there is a carryall bag for just about every stitching need. You can check them out at that link.

Weather events have to be the worst as there is really nothing we can do about them. We had a crazy weather report last week...wild temperature swing, possibility of hail, winds at 110 mph and a severe thunder storm. Oh and a possibility of a tornado was thrown into the mix, a surprisingly common thing here during summer. The day was lovely though with a bit of sun peeking through clouds and the warmest day so far and where we were going was far from where this forecast was predicted. According to the radar we were going to miss this band of weather completely. So we headed off. Sure enough we had a splendid day out but on our way back when still in Ottawa, it suddenly all changed. And when I say sudden I mean in a matter of minutes. While in a long line of five o'clock traffic, the sky darkened, the wind whipped up and rain started to fall. In seconds, it was falling in sheets...at times looking like a white sheet completely obliterating the landscape and pounding on the roof. Just able to glimpse the red brake lights of the car in front of us now and then. We knew we needed to get off the road. As we were desperately looking to see how we could manage that, a sign of a church came visible, St. Stephens Anglican Church. We were able to make a quick turn into their parking lot and get out of the traffic. My heart was beating so fast.

And within minutes, it was all over. The sun came out! Feeling so thankful we resumed our journey, now seeing trees down but none across the road thankfully, one car accident...how there weren't more is a miracle, and an ambulance blared past us. Later I read the weather incident was caused by the cold weather we've been having so far this spring meeting the warmth of a sudden heat wave. There were many accidents and damage to property reported. On the news they said Ottawa has very high home insurance rates due to the increased frequency of extreme weather events. It sure seems like there are more "events" these days.

Okay something fun after that! I mentioned I'm checking out older lady summer dresses online. Amazon has an amazing stock of such. But I have requirements like it must have a sleeve and a higher neckline. I wonder could the strings here pull up the neckline a bit more. I would wear summer 3/4 length leggings under this I think.

I like how comfy this one looks. And like the one above, got great reviews. Do you go by the reviews?

I should mention I have a strict price point with summer clothes. Our season is not long enough to warrant paying a lot of money for an item-unless there is a special occasion of course. The dresses I'm showing here are less than $25C.

And I like this one...so easy wearing I think. A cotton linen blend-a bit baggy looking but comfy too...this would be great around the house and I like the blue.

I have my summer clothes out and hanging in the closet. It really doesn't look like I need anything new...it never does, does it! But it's nice to get something so I'll keep you posted.

Our local cardiologist's office called Tony for an appointment. I'll talk more about that next time.

Hope your week is going great!

Glad to see your lilac tree is sprouting. Our spring is finally in full swing here. I love the baskets and broken dishes blocks. It will be fun to watch these projects grow. The weather during your road trip sounds scary and much like an experience we had at the beginning of April. I've never bought anything except workout clothes from Amazon but I definitely read the reviews. Hope all goes well with Tony's appointment.

I read the reviews on clothing from Amazon - so often I end up not liking the feel or fit of the clothes that I send them back. One time I have order work out pants and they smelled horribly like a chemical smell of some sort. I think the first two tops that you show are nice I don't care for the blue baggy but that is just my preference - I don't wear dresses - but I do wear long tops with leggings -capris or long

the storm sounds horrible - I have had to pull over at times too when it is so strong

So glad you were able to find a safe place to get off the road and wait the storm out. Some storms seem to appear out of nowhere and they seem to be getting scarier all the time.
I love the second dress and would definitely live in it a lot of the summer. I mainly wear longer dresses all summer because I find them so much cooler than shorts. As for the reviews, I don't tend to believe them overly much, at least not for places like Amazon. I grew suspicious a number of years ago when our #2 son and DIL moved to BC and left a bad review for the moving company. The company contacted them and offered them $500 to take the review down. That makes me wonder how often that happens elsewhere. I always go back to something I learned in school ... caveat emptor (let the buyer beware).

Loving your dress choices!!
Glad to hear you found a safe space during that fast hitting storm!! Scarey for sure...
I read reviews, but am leery of believing them--have had to return stuff more and more these days--not as advertised.
I do so wish that sizes were the same over all platforms...they are certainly not...
I don't wear dresses, but tunic tops with at least 3/4 sleeves work for me over crop pants in summertime and jeans in other seasons...
Hope your lilac will bloom for you--such beautifully scented flowers...hugs, Julierose

I have never seen a Trout Lily before- how pretty. You have some very lovely projects in the works. I have always wanted to piece a Broken Dish quilt- maybe some day. Have a wonderful day. Hugs.

The last one, blue, is my pick, and a visit for Tony, hope they can be positive with anything. I was so thankful for all my tests, prior to this I was positive there was something radically wrong. And to be truthful, was prepared for anything they would find, so it wasn't a surprise when the nurse said, " Your heart rate is 107, are you feeling okay" ? This was when I was waiting to go to theatre, in the big area when you either wait or return to, Yes, apprehension can do wondrous things !!!Thank goodness you could pull off the road. Horizontal hail and blinding rain are all really hard to drive through.

That must have been an epic trip! Such storms.
I'm trying to stay off Amazon and buy local. It's tough as I don't like to shop!

I really like the dresses, you chose. I don't purchase clothing online because I really like to feel the fabrics. I also do not pay much more than $25.00 for summer dresses or skirts either. Lately I have been making my summer dresses.

God bless.

Pretty dresses! Spring is bursting out in your neck of the woods. We can all do without those violent storms. Glad you were able to find a safe spot to wait out the storm. The Ottawa valley is prone to changeable weather. Gail at the cozy quilter.

Jocelyn, are you the driver? I have become the driver for the two of us. I can imagine that sudden storm was frightening! Thank heavens you could get off and find a safe place to wait it out. Spring is a season of scary weather here in Texas. We’ve been blessed to have only rain, and do we need it!. But a town nearby had grapefruit sized hail last week…..that would be so dangerous. I don’t think I’ve worn a dress except to weddings since we moved to this small town from Austin. At home I wear some knit pants I find at Walmart in many different colors. I buy my at home tees there too. I have several nice pairs of pants that I wear to church, etc. i would never have thought I’d give so little care to clothes!!!!! I used to sew for myself and loved Vogue patterns!!! Now I stitch!!!!!!

I like your broken dishes. Crazy weather! Glad you go through safely. I love the black dress with flowers. I pulled out my summer stuff last week - and I go back and forth between winter and summer right now. Good luck with Tony's appointment.

I want new clothes! I like #2 best as #3 would make me look like a sack ( I had a tan one like it once) So much going on weatherwise here too, very similar. L.

Your Basket Love blocks are so cute. Love all your signs of spring, except for that storm! What a wonderful thing you saw the church sign. That sounds like some of the storms we had when we were in south Texas. It's so frightening when you can't even see the car ahead of you. Yes I read the reviews diligently on Amazon. In fact I sort my searches by rating. Those are lovely dresses!

We had a similar violent storm last Tuesday. It was probably part of the same weather system. Trees down, including a large evergreen two doors down from my house. We lost power for about 2 hours. When I was visiting friends in North Carolina, we had large hail during a storm that left dimples all over the hood, roof, and trunk of my car. Fortunately didn't break any windows. I don't buy clothes or shoes online. I need to try everything on, plus like someone else said, I like to be able to feel the fabric and check the construction. Of course, I don't buy many clothes at all these days.

The weather has been strange, though we have missed most of the extremes until this week. No storm, but it is supposed to 95 today and tomorrow, then back down in the 65-75 range for 10 days. Very strange in deed. Our lilac is in full bloom this morning, 10 days earlier than normal. I need to go cut some now so we can enjoy them indoors the next two days.

I'm so glad your lilac is sprouting. I hope you have some blooms this year. I think their fragrance is heavenly.
Your baskets look good. I enjoy using shirt fabrics, too.
Mel Robbins has some interesting ideas. I haven't heard or read much. I checked out her new book but had to return it before I read very far. Now I'm 95th or so on the list. It'll be a wait.
Your weather event sounds crazy! Frightening, too, not being able to see where you were going. So glad you're safe coming through all of that.
Best wishes for finding some summer dresses you're happy with. I see dresses online and usually can't commit to them for one reason or another. I like buying in person, especially when it comes to clothes and fabric.

We have Trout lilies at the cottage, but I never knew their name. Ottawa can produce nasty weather in a flash. Got caught up in a storm like you travelled through and we were glad when we out drove it. You always have interesting projects on the go.
