Art, Sunny Stars, Ned News, Comfort Soup

From reading blogs, I'm quickly realizing I'm not the only one thinking February flew by. The weather outside my windows is back to frightful so nothing is indicating a new spring like month. Here March is an in between month anyway and can go either way, keep us snowbound or bring on rain and melting. Weather is not that important to me. I would never move somewhere just for weather though I might avoid some areas because of the kind of weather they have. I don't think I'd do well where there is high humidity a lot of the year, for instance. I wonder is there a place on earth that does not have acts of bad weather/insect/animal/civil unrest/gun issues, etc. challenges.

I love The New Yorker iconic covers. This one below is the March 10, 1980 one-the artist is Eugene Mihaesco who designed more than 70 New Yorker covers. This looks like a watercolour piece, my favourite art.

I enjoy their online site where you can find many interesting things such as podcasts, cartoons, do the daily jigsaw puzzle of these covers and also a crossword puzzle, all for free. At this link, The New Yorker, you have to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to find these items if you'd like to check them out.

I've been doing some prep for my ongoing projects. Lots of diamonds and some in yellows for my EPP Stars. My side work table in the tv room. I am so pleased to keep using up scraps for these.

Two finished. Yellow is definitely a sunny colour.
I've started tracing the templates for Liberty's Birds. In the spirit of sometime is now, I've gotten out the fancy freezer paper that I've been hoarding for years, to press into use. I'll share the fabrics I've picked out next time. Among my quilting books is this one below by Kay Mackenzie. I sewed a number of these simple flower appliqued blocks a while back. Kay has a book of wonderful teapot applique blocks that I love. You can take a look HERE.
We took Ned to the Vet yesterday for his annual checkup. He got three shots; the only one I can easily pronounce is rabies. He also got his medication to take monthly that prevents heartworm, ticks, etc. (Wish there was a medication for humans to repel ticks.) Ned was so good but we had a long wait and then both the practitioner and the vet saw him and he became very, very stressed. They were tied up with an emergency and operated on a dog to remove an athletic sock, a big one, from him (second time having to do this!) and there were a lot of stress smells in the air. Poor Ned! I took him outside as soon as they were done so he could have a walk about before getting in the car. He slept all afternoon and is still low key this morning.

I have my crockpot out to make a pea soup with leftover ham. True comfort food on a windy, wintry day. I plan to make tea buns later this afternoon. Comfort food is still needed...how about at your house? What would be comfort food for you?

I always add chopped onion and carrots.
The Alberta Clipper that arrived overnight making March blow in like a lion is still making the wind whistle around our windows. Sounds worse than it really is so Ned and I are heading out.
Hope your weekend is going great!
Also great to link up with amazing linkie parties like the one at Songbird Designs.

Lots of prep work makes for fun stitching. LOVE comfort food. Snow still here in Ohio. Mac 'n Cheese, lasagna, thick stews are comfort foods for us.

Winter is such a good time for comfort food! My favorite is either crock pot beef stew, or veggie lasagna, which I'm making today. I've also got cinnamon buns rising. Thanks for the link to the New Yorker page, looks like fun!

I like the New Yorker magazine too and look on line at it. You have so much snow still I prefer our shorter winters for sure but sometimes I wish I got more use out of my sweat pants and heavy sweaters - I have too many of them and it seems the older I get the warmer I am and have less and less need of them each year. I told Mike this year that I need to clean out the drawers and closet of winter clothes and only keep a little of them. They take up more room and I don't use many of them.

That looks cold, perfect weather for soup. For us comfort food is a big pan of chilli con carne. Have fun with your stars.

Poor Ned! I didn't realize that dogs were affected by stress like that. I'm sure you'll give him lots of love today, Jocelyn. Your soup meal sounds yummy and perfect for the weather, too. The star project is growing beautifully, and the new applique project looks like it will be fun to get going on!

Thanks for link to the New Yorker. I'm always looking for free puzzles, so I will check it out. I love to do jigsaw puzzles on my computer since I can finish them in one day. I hope some signs of spring appear for you soon.

Yum, home made soup is both delicious and comforting. Poor Ned, so pleased he survived his visit to the vet, they certainly do get stressed out going there, don't they. You still have lots of snow around.

A big pot of Libby's famous chili is our comfort food. Served over rice and topped with cheddar cheese.

Poor Ned! Our cats had their annual visit. They were so tired!

Lovely New Yorker cover. Feel for Ned, hope he perks up and that pea and ham soup looks like it would be wonderful! Like the paper piecing too.

Comfort food here to me (perhaps not my husband) is soups, stews and casseroles. Love the yellow stars.

God bless.

Pea soup with ham is on my agenda for this coming week. Still cold and snowy here too. Hope Ned is feeling back to his normal self now. The New Yorker has some interesting art on the covers. Our daughter gave us a puzzle for Christmas featuring cover art from the New Yorker. Lovely stars!

Poor Ned. :( I hope he perked up after his walk. Our sweet dog Buddy, who died in 2021, always got very stressed at the vet's office. I'll join you in the split pea soup! I don't even need any bread or cracker with it because it is so satisfying. Even though he has never tried it, Hubs thinks he hates it (rolling my eyes), so I rarely make it. You look so cute in your photo!

Poor Ned! Going to the vet is stressful enough without him knowing what was happening in the other room. Hope he's back to normal now.
I love that beautiful illustration. 1980 and the cover price was only one dollar.
I've never seen freezer paper in that format and always buy mine by the roll at the hardware store (Home Hardware to be exact).
Comfort food for me would have to be soup or lasagna.

I knew going to the vet was stressful, but never thought about how they could pick up on other animals' stress. (My guinea pigs were generally okay up until getting manhandled.) Comfort food! Definitely pea soup is on that list, along with pasta and stew... ooh and mac-and-cheese.

A nice weekend!

Ned and I both would have been stressed... plus Milo used to sleep a lot after vaccines. I know I wish we were protected from ticks and the bad news is Cole was on prevention and a wood tick gave him rocky mountain disease anyway.
Hey, at least you live in Canada, I'm afraid of so much here right now

homemade chicken soup is my go to comfort or mashed potatoes...your alberta clipper always comes this way and we've got the winds as well but slightly warmer temps...you can keep the snow! lovely little EPP starts!

Poor Ned. The Vet is always a stressful, frightful experience for my dog & cat too. Good thing your home is relatively quiet so Ned can rest up and be himself again. That walk ought to do it! Your diamond stars look great!

Aw, poor Ned. The vet sure is stressful.

Your EPP yellow stars are definitely sunny - a bright spot on a winter's day! I look forward to seeing your new project. Poor Ned. Our Chloe gets stressed just riding in the car...because she knows! LOL Comfort food at our house is definitely my Potato, Corn, Bacon Chowder! We love it no matter the weather - hot or cold is a great time for soup. We just love soup...and cornbread of course! Your soup sounds good but I have a picky eater and he wants nothing to do with peas, ugh. Thanks for sharing with us at Monday Musings!
