My Aurifil Thread Prize, Treats, Basket of Diamonds, Contentment

Spring continues to play hide and seek with us.  Ottawa has now recorded lowest temperatures on record for a few of the days this week and snowflakes keep dancing outside my windows (but not landing thankfully). Now they say Saturday will be normal for here. It seems a little like a carrot on a stick so I am not, as the saying goes- preparing my joys.
We continue to spend our days in a certain amount of busyness. The two of us are basically happy hermits who for the most part, find enough to do in our near surroundings without pining for much else.  Hubby is still enjoying cutting dead wood and clearing new trails all the while lamenting he can't work like he could when he was 40 (which is half his present age).  But I know he likes to get out in the fresh air, put to use those tools he's bought over the years and also ride about on his fun four wheeler. It also totally justifies the nap he likes to take when he comes in.

I've been happily checking out garden centers that offer curb side pickup.  Every year I buy a new flowering bush for the front garden. I keep looking for a Bridal Wreath spirea which is next on my list. This is what I'm dreaming of.
NOT MY shrub:  a photo from Nature Hills Nursery
                  Bridal Wreath Spirea
I finally got a photo of the duck on the pond and that morning there were two of them. Mallards both. My fingers were cold so it was hard to adjust the camera and I was crouched in the little place I've made as a sort of blind.  I will have to get more comfortable like find an old stool if I'm going to hang out there for any length of time. I just can't seem to crouch for long any more.
I got well treated for Mother's Day.  A meal from a local restaurant, mimosas for two and home made goodies. It was nice to eat someone else's cooking for a change. And look at that lovely planter.  It is inside for now till the air warms up a bit. Murphy was so excited - someone was here!
A sweet tulip which matched this week's table cloth and sweet treats.
I was a winner! On the facebook group for the Book Club Hand Pieced QAL, I shared one of my blocks and won the prize that week. This was extraordinary because almost always prizes are only awarded to US folks because of the high cost of shipping, which I totally understand. So I never even read what the prizes are for any of these giveaways or SAL's.  But how nice to get this little package of Aurifil threads called Calm in the mail. That was a treat too and I know I will enjoy using them.
I have Basket of Diamonds, No. 1 made.  I used my Marti Michell templates. I think it is the same as Melva's.  This is machine stitched. I will be trying another.
I've never cared for the use of the word happy...the defining of what it is exactly so hard to put into words as I do think of happy as a floating kind of feeling. I've always thought being content is more grounded, more attainable and a more enduring emotion. In this saying it looks like I found someone who agrees. ( Whoever the heck he was!)
There is no greater disaster than not to know contentment.
-Laozi, c. 550 BC

I hope you are content though circumstances are trying.

Good morning, Jocelyn! Oh, those mallards on the pond is just a lovely photo. No, I can't crouch for any length of time any longer. Murphy looks like he had a grand time celebrating Mother's Day. That's what we got for Sue's mom - a complete dinner of filet, salad, baked potatoes and dinner rolls. She was delighted to not have to cook! Congrats on winning the Aurifil thread and in such lovely colors. Take care. ~smile~ Roseanne

What fun you've had. Great getting the man outdoors. It's been so cold, though.
I like your diamonds!

Fun post ... nice to see all of your happies! We very rarely get ducks or geese on our ponds, but it happens occasionally! Your quote on contentment is spot on. Another I've always agreed with is, Nothing will kill your contentment faster than comparison. Right?! Hugs to you!! :)

What lovely Mother's Day gifts--and a great win for you
it is still pretty chilly here, too...
We haven't as yet ventured out except for necessary grocery runs...
We often hear geese flying over (love that cheering section they have!)
but rarely see any now that we are not waling on our closed up beaches...
I have been trying out new patterns to keep myself busy here...and have found
a few that i will make into larger projects...mostly scrappy ones--(no surprise there, right?)
Stay safe and enjoy the warming temps...Julierose

Hello, love the Mallards on the pond. The bush is beautiful, I would like this in my yard. We are finally having some normal temps for this time of the year. Murphy is wondering what is in the bags. Your arrangement is pretty and I love the tulip. Great quote! Wishing you a happy day and a great weekend ahead.

Ooh - good stuff! How excited we get over someone else making food. I'm envious - take out is so far away here. Those PB cups look delicious! I'm glad we cook, but how I look forward to the day we can have a meal out. Yay for winning thread! Those look like great colors to quilt with.

I too am a happy hermit. I am finishing up my teaching contract for the year and then am free until August. Thanks for linking up and stay well.

You really DID have a nice Mother's day. I'm so ready for a restaurant meal or even a pizza and I don't even eat at restaurants very often! lol I guess we are all just tired of cooking. Love your surprises in the mail too. I have always made the best of my situation and where I live so I guess I would say I'm content too! Hugs!

Jocelyn you are full of wisdom. I was always searching for happiness, then I discovered contentment and all the anxiety I used to hold onto disappeared. Even after losing Jeff I was still content. What a gorgeous flowering bush, no wonder you are seeking one. Great gifties, and how wonderful the treats. Great win, is that 80 wt? I use that for my hexies when I work on them. Love it! So many great likes this week. Oh and as to your crouching place. How about a log turned on its end. If hubby is cutting trees he could cut you one about 18-24 inches tall that you could perch on.

Crouching down, like kneeling, then getting up again, seems to be getting a bit much for us these days. A sign of getting older and less agile I expect. Congratulations on the win, you can never have too much thread!

Contentment is something of great value. I am also waiting for that warmer weather and it's always just a couple of days away.

That bridal wreath spirea would be a lovely addition to your yard, Jocelyn! And I love the photo of the ducks, too. We have pair of mallards visiting our yard this afternoon, and we don't even have a pond! Congratulations on your win from the Hand-Pieced QAL! That looks like the perfect set of threads for you. Hope the warmer weather is headed your way.

I agree-Happy is fleeting but contentment is steady. Are you kidding me-“Calm” and Aurifil in the same sentence. Yes. Congrats on winning. The weather is such a tease some days. I hope you find that Bridal Wreath-really pretty for the garden. I agree-NO CROUCHING. I may not get back up! I feel like your hubby on missing the abilities at 40! I miss my garden and could sure use fresh veggies in this lockdown. Great post!

You got some nice Mother's Day treats and the Aurifil thread win is the frosting on the cake. Looks like some good neutral colors. We finally had a decent day weather-wise, cloudy but in the 60's (F) so I was able to get some yard work done before the rain arrived around dinnertime. Warmer weather is coming next week. I'll try to steer some of it your way.

How lovely to have a doorstep delivery! Congratulations on your win. I won some Aurifil threads and they came direct from the factory in Italy! Great Mallard picture. xx

Oh Jocelyn, Firsty I have to say I love your garden, and though I do have a bridal spirea in my garden, unfortunately my garden is only the size of a pocket handkerchief. I also love birds and dogs and used to own two black Labradors (my favourite dogs. Lastly my mouth is watering - dark chocolate peanut butter cups something I have a job to find here in the UK. We can get the Reece one but they are milk chocolate and to me they don't taste half as good as the dark one (I know because my son got me some when he was visiting the States one year). x

I have been reading your blog for quite some time but I am not one to comment. Today you wrote something that really made me want to respond. I figured out many years ago that being content is the way to go. Happy can be so fleeting, but a sense of contenment with who you are and where you are in your life is much more satifying and rewarding.
Thank you for your blog,
Elizabeth

Your post is full of sweet contentment and small joys! Made me happy to see your Mother Day's treats! Aurifil thread is AWESOME! What a great prize! Have a wonderful week of contentment! :)

I quite agree with your comments on the feeling of contentment, but think this is a knowledge you gain with time and the according experience. Laozi was a 6th century Chinese philosopher who - like many famous Chinese philosophers - said many wise truths gained by experience.
I feel very much for you with the abnormally cold spell. Here in Germany we had a couple of hot days, followed this week by frosts and April weather, a spell we call the "Eisheiligen", which is as much as "ice saints". They are over and the temperatures are to rise again. I then hope to see my dipladenia and roses blossom soon. Wish you milder weather too so that you can enjoy your gorgeous surroundings.

Your Mother's Day goodies look wonderful! I love that tulip embroidery on your table with the peanut butter cups. I'm so happy you won the threads! Your basket of diamonds is just beautiful.
I can't crouch for any length of time, so I appreciate your crouching for the photo of those beautiful mallards. My husband daily says the same thing as yours about not being able to do what he did at 40. And he wants a 4-wheeler to tool around in and says so every time someone drives down the dirt road on one. We are surrounded by a national forest with natural trails, so I wouldn't mind it either!

We had a whole row of those spireas at our second house - so pretty (and the bees loved them). Hope you manage to find one! Your Mother's Day goodies look wonderful and you must have felt so blessed. As for happy vs content - I'll go with content every time because I feel as though it's more long-lasting.

Murphy looks so cute investigating all the fun Mother's Day gifts! Mine get so excited when anyone so much as walks by. The ducks are so pretty on the lake! The last couple of days I've seen a M/F pair of ducks wandering around in our neighborhood. It's strange as it's a fairly ordinary suburban neighborhood and they were just wandering around in people's yards, but there are some ponds just outside the neighborhood so maybe they came in from there. Anyway, fun to see them, and unlike other wildlife the dogs didn't seem to care too much so that was good.

How lovely to have wildlife to admire. Congrats on your win. Your basket block is beautiful. I am glad you got some spoiling on Mothers Day. "Content" is a very good word and state of being x

We have a whole row of the Bridal wreath spirea bushes on the north side of our house and they are just getting ready to bloom. I think the word happy has replaced the word joy. I say, bring joy back. To find joy in every day things is truly a blessing.

Hello, Hubby and I do not mind being hermits. We do get outdoors for some local walks. Nice sighting of the mallards. It is always nice to see your furbaby Murphy. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Enjoy your day, wishing you a happy weekend! Take care and stay safe! PS, thank you for the visit and comment on my blog!
