Stitchy Purchases, Tumbling Blocks, Flower Garden Quilt, Links

This is exactly what happened here!

Summer and a heat wave warning arrived simultaneously on Friday.  But it is the mosquitoes that are plaguing us; the worst I've seen here.  We have to smear /spray that awful stuff on us every time we walk or spend time in the garden.

Enough about that - I'm here to talk about the happy small things that we have enjoyed since last posting. For starters I received stitching mail.

I ordered two project bags from a lovely Etsy shop, MiniMadeMiriam does beautiful stitching on a wide array of affordable items and also enjoys collaborating to make her products customized.  In my case I loved this soft summer green and of course the bird fabric
and I just loved this cute doggy print too.
I am delighted with both my purchases and what a fun as well as practical way to corral stitching projects.

I've been busy prepping more Tumbling Blocks to stitch in the evenings so here are a few more finished. These are 4 1/2 inch blocks, not very big.  Like I said, a thousand of these should do but that's okay. I never tire of hand work. And I love how they are making me not only cut into a few favoured fat quarters but also dig into my scrap bags.

You know I am developing a bit of an obsession with hand pieced quilts. I especially like dresdens which is proof I was born in the wrong era. But anyway saw this one at A Cloud of Quilt Patterns  and am totally in love with it.  At the time a new take on the vintage Dresden block- this one called Setting Sun which was a Laura Wheeler newspaper pattern many many decades ago.  The white corner pieces are clouds.  I've downloaded the information in my Dream On file.
I read that post just after I'd put out my Flower Garden Block quilt for the summer. It was a relief it went through the washing machine fine though having all those hand stitched seams.
This popped up on my Facebook feed...the male and female Rose-breasted Grosbeaks visiting the feeder at the same time. It was a pleasure to have them visit late afternoon for about a week years ago at the farm. Actually 7 Years Ago...is that possible!!
It was not a good spring for trilliums or trout lilies on this property but these are amazing this year. Blankets of them everywhere we turn. Violets- a symbol for faithfulness.
I've been calling these wildflowers dog violets. The lines on the leaves look like pretty quilting lines.
I have lots more to share but will save it for next time.   Oh almost forgot, Lee Anna is stitching the most amazing colourful Tumbling Block quilt which you can check out at this Not Afraid of Color post  as well, she is hosting our Thankful Thursday group.

You can’t have too many totes or bags! Pretty fabric in the bird one. I’ve made a similar one, mine has vinyl on the front! I love all your nature photos. Isn’t it fun when a flavones pops up on Facebook memories? Have a great weekend!

What fun project bags, Jocelyn! You can never have too many of those. I love your tumbling blocks - they look fun to make. I like your different red prints in the arrangement you have. The violets are beautiful!

Those tumbling blocks make me want to run my hand over them to make sure they are not 3-D. Very striking effect, Jocelyn. Also I love your flower garden block quilt/tablecloth. Rose-breasted grosbeaks nest here every year. Usually in an apple tree. Must have a look at my wild violet leaves. Never noticed the quilted effect before.

bugs can absolutely ruin the whole warm season in my opinion - I hate having to spray myself down and usually don't remember until I start to get bit. The plants look lovely - I do believe you all area getting hotter than us - today is our hot day 85 and tomorrow back to the 70's for 4 days or so but at least I think after today it is 4 days with no rain.
Love that pattern you show

Hi Jocelyn! I was just thinking about mosquitoes this morning, being happy that I haven't seen any YET. I am so sorry they are so bad for you. I just HATE putting on bug spray, etc. Your tumbling blocks are coming together so nicely and growing in number! I never heard of violets being a sign of faithfulness. My mother's name was Violet and I would say that would be quite fitting for her. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

So proud to see my project bags displayed on your blog. Thank you!
Your beautiful tumbling block project is tempting me to do some hand piecing again, perhaps some English paper piecing.

Those bags sure are pretty and I really like those blocks! We're having a heat wave here too, it's been stupid hot since Sunday!

Your bags look so nice. I love your tumbling blocks. That’s a lot of work! I hope the mosquitoes aren’t bad all summer.

We've been experiencing that roller coaster of up and down temperatures. It was near 90F earlier in the week (and 84 in the house which has neither shade nor AC) and today it was 48F when I got up at 7AM and is now down to 44. And it's raining, but I'll not complain about that as it's the first rain in over 3 weeks and greatly needed. I've always been fascinated by tumbling blocks patterns so I'm following both yours and LeeAnna's with great interest.

Happy post! Thanks Jocelyn! I love your tumbling blocks project--the red just makes it!! I love your flower table topper too! We have a lot of wild violets too! My Nana never wanted me to weed them. I like them in certain areas! Your zippered pouches are adorable! Thanks for the pick-me-up today!!

I am not a fan of using pesticides, but because of all the neighbors mosquito breeding grounds it is near impossible to be outside. So we spray around the houses, it helps for about a month, otherwise it would be unbearable to be outside. Love your tumbling blocks. Aren't the number of violets crazy? We have them too.

Those are such adorable purchases from the Etsy shop. You never know what treasures you'll find there. I get anxious just looking at those tumbling blocks. Stitching those are definitely not my "thing." I am truly amazed by those who are able to do them so well. Happy stitching! -Andrea

Ha! That drawing could be me. I get so hot at night these warm days!

Those Tumbling Blocks are so pretty. They remind me of the quilts my Amish neighbors make.

I have never seen rose-breasted grossbeaks at a feeder before. In fact, I have not seen any yet this year. Good goal bird for this weekend.

I like your cartoon as it perfectly describes my husband and me, adding and subtracting quilts to our bed recently.😊 It was 92 on Wednesday and right now 43 with a high of 50 today 🙁. So far no mosquitoes here- hope they’re not on the way. Your new purchases look excellent. I continue to enjoy hand work, but more hand appliqué than hand piecing. The violets are gorgeous! Always enjoy your posts!

Those tumbling blocks have such a 3D effect! Your flower garden block quilt is just beautiful.
We haven't seen mosquitos in spite of lots of rain lately, and I'm just waiting for them to zoom in on us since our daughter and "littles" are coming today - lol!

I am not sure where we are going with the weather, but we are really having a great break from the drought - Rack up almost 11.5 inches of rain in the last month! YEA!

I like your new purchases! Cute! You make me want to do the tumbling blocks! I have never quilted a quilt by hand. Maybe I will do a small project! Yours are very pretty! Love all the colors!

Neat patter from the past! Your flowers and birds are so pretty! Have a great week-end. Memorial Day week-end here in the US!

Maybe you will be lucky and have some warmer weather for a couple of months!

Such pretty tumbling blocks you are working on and great haul on the project bags.

Gorgeous project bags!! The fabric in both is superb.

Still working on perfecting a disappearing 9 patch quilt here. It will be a long time before I move on to Dresden or Tumbling blocks. You are doing lovey work.

God bless.

Oh, I adore violets. They must smell divine! Those two little pouches are sweet; love the fabrics. Your tumbling blocks are looking lovely. I can just imagine how amazing a quilt filled with little blocks will look. An excellent way to use all your pretty little scraps of fabrics.

Beautiful violets, both kinds! And I love your tumbling blocks. I have made a few by hand, but not with English Paper Piecing. Good luck with the Laura Wheeler block, it looks complicated, not for the faint of heart (like me!).

Sweet RED Tumbling Blocks for the RSC, Jocelyn!! You've even included violets in your post for next month's color. Enjoy those new project bags!

We used to have grosbeaks at the feeder when I was growing up, but I haven't seen any in many years. Your project bags are going to be put to good use I expect. Your carpet of violets is so pretty - but now you have me wondering about the trilliums here. I haven't seen any, but then again we're not traveling too far with the stay-at-home order so perhaps I've just missed the window of opportunity to see them.

It's hard for me to imagine mosquitoes in places where it gets so cold in winter, but I guess those little devils are very resilient. I have never made tumbling blocks and likely never will, so will follow along with your quilt.

Great project bags. Love those fabrics in them. My daughter would have loved the bird one. Great projects you are working on too! Love as always seeing your lovely flowers and outdoor pictures! Hope you have a great week!

I love those project bags. Tumbling blocks always make me smile. What a great way to use up some scraps.

Cute bags and a nice hand work project on the go too! Nice way to spend your time and use up some scraps! We had trilliums and jack in the pulpits in the park where we went hiking last week. The violets are out in our garden. I have not noticed any mosquitoes yet but the ticks are out--yikes! We use lots of bug spray for them! We've had cooler weather the last few days but it is going to warm up again this week Take care.

I am in awe of your tumbling blocks. There is a lot to be said for hand piecing. . .it can be done anywhere which is what I like the best! Some day, I'll get going on a hand piecing project. . .I like looking at yours though and that is enough for now!

Jocelyn - that tumbling block quilt is amazing - it looks three-dimensional! I have had the female rose-breasted grosbeak at my feeder but no male. Curious! That is quite a mass of violets - gorgeous! And we don't have many mosquitoes, but the ticks are terrible this year ...

Hi Jocelyn,
Love your bird and dog fabric...really cute. I really love
your Tumbling Blocks..looking good! I like Dresden Quilts too. I've got a couple in my To Do Box of quilts. We have a big patch of violets that grow in our back yard by the barn. Have a great day!

Such fun bags you've purchased. I'm sure they will be well-used.
Tumbling Blocks is one of those quilts I look at and wonder how on earth they were made, and imagine a million careful hand stitches. Good for you to take these on. They look great.
I love the star quilt on your table. Did you make it?
How I love violets! I know many people consider them weeds but I encourage them whenever I see them in our yard.
And the weather! It seems like Ohio can't decide whether it's late spring, early spring, or summer. One quilt, two quilts, no quilts. What will summer be like?

I love those red tumbling blocks! I will make myself a Dresden quilt someday, it’s on my wish list!
