I enjoy spying the white birch trees. |
Last night we fell asleep to the faint drone of snowmobiles over on the the trails. It was a great calm night for it but would have been cold. I imagine they would know to be well covered. And snowmobiles these days offer heated handles and seats, all sorts of stuff, not like when I drove one in the late seventies.
How did your last week and weekend go? We had a very long doctor's visit for Tony with much discussion about the failing strength in his legs. He has taken two falls in a week but so thankful only his ego was bruised...snow makes for a soft landing. More tests are in his future as we do need to get to the bottom of this. Here is a kitchen window photo of him and Ned returning from their daily walk. Like the doctor said, on the surface an 85 year old man to be walking his dog daily, riding his Spyder weekly last summer, meeting his friends for coffee once a week, etc. sounds like he's doing very well, on the surface at least.
BTW, he doesn't at all mind me talking about him here on the blog. In fact, enjoys reading your comments and suggestions.
In stitchy news, I took out Year at Hawk Run Hallow. The blocks for each month are 6 inches and include full coverage areas- a lot of tiny stitches. But I love how you can otherwise choose a small motif and with just a few minutes of stitching, the design gets moved along.
I did lay more stitches on the Dog Days of August block. These full coverage parts are slow going but easy stitching without colour changes. I'm pleased with my progress this week...another photo to follow as August has been stitched now.
Btw, Stitching Daily offers an article with links to 7 Free Full Coverage Cross Stitch Pattern Websites for those of you who are interested. And the DMC site offers almost 700 free cross stitch patterns. Fun browsing! More stars in pinks have been sewn. I'm planning to applique these to background white fabric...maybe.
About the triangles used in this EPP project. I'm reusing the triangles I'd cut for the Panama Pyramids piece. Just trimming them to be smaller.
Pattern Universe and
My Teaching Station are just two sites that provide free shapes that you can download for projects. There are a lot of online teaching sites that offer all kinds of simple shapes that could be used in quilting; quite often they are free.
What do you suppose this noxious looking brew below is? It's my usual winter booster food for the indoor plants...banana skins and eggshells in water. I let it sit a couple of days and then each plant gets a healthy drink.
And for us, I have a large cabbage to use up and am planning a slow cooker meal with it and rice and pork sausages. I'm going to make a red sauce with canned tomatoes, beef broth and splashes of balsamic vinegar. That's as fancy as I get these days. I drink one cup of coffee a day but it is a big one. And I like Banana Chips for a snack.
And a Pine Seed Bug photobombed my picture. They are considered a wintertime benign home invader here in Ontario. I just put them outside which Tony thinks is cruel but they are supposed to be able to survive our winters so... I hope this week is full of good things for each of you.

you do have a lot of tiny stitches there for sure! Sorry to hear of Tony falling - the legs just get tired out as we age I think. For me it is arthritis I hope the doctor comes up with a reason but so many blame "old age" or "it is just arthritis" I know I get tired of that reason but nothing else but arthritis shows up for me
Eggshells & banana peels in water for the plants??? Hmmm??? Does it perk up the plants? I might need to try this.
So sorry Tony has fallen - it's something I worry about with the RC too. He did fall in the furniture store in September but luckily only ended up with bruises. He shuffles his feet and his shoes 'caught' on the floor and momentum took him the rest of the way.
I am happy to see a return of the 'Year' project. So many stitches but it's going to be a masterpiece when it's done.
And thank you for the plant food 'recipe'. I'm going to try it to see if it might encourage my Christmas cactus to flower.
Lovely to see your cross stitch and your pink stars.
Tony seems happy with his walks etc and I think men meeting up with friends weekly is a great thing to do. Speaking for myself, I know I'm not always as careful with my feet when walking, older people often shuffle and dont life their feet as they used to do. Probably it's a leg/muscular thing but it's so easy to trip over your feet these days. I was going to ask you about snow mobiles why would people want to go out and about at night? Seems rather dangerous to ms.
It's tough when you have to watch out for falls. My Joe's back is healing, sort of. It happens constantly.
Lovely work you do. Those stitches are amazing.
Hope your husband gets some answers for the leg issues. I'm finding out it's the pits to get old. Here in eastern SD we are having a totally brown winter. Lots of cold, but absolutely no snow. We've had a couple dustings, and then 2 days later it's gone. So strange to not have snow.
Bonito bordado y tomo buena nota del alimento invernal de plantas; también he visitado el sitio de DMC y es muy interesante, gracias por compartirlo y BESICOS.
I do hope Tony gets some answers about the leg weakness after the tests. I was glad to see the walking stick in his hand.
I love the DMC site. I need to check it out once again.
God bless.
Your cross stitching project is a beauty. All those stitches! I've heard about banana peel and egg shells water for the plants, but never tried it. The beautiful birch tree lights up the forest, so pretty. Sorry about your husband's fall. The tests should give some answers. Good thing he's an active person.
I love your stitched piece - what fun. Amazing how a few stitches a day can mount up. xx
Hubby is finally accepting that he needs to have his other knee done, and is not happily looking forward to the recovery. I've been noticing that his calves are getting smaller, which is a concern. He, too, is 85, and has fallen numerous times. Lately I've been encouraging him to do toe and heel raises when sitting, like one day when I was driving us 2 hours away to shop. I was doing it too! I can sure feel it in my calves!
Sorry to hear about Tony's fall, but he is impressing me with his activities. He does not look 85. I fell over a dog toy 3 weeks ago and my knee was the recipient of my weight, but nothing was injured thank goodness. I saw the doctor yesterday for my annual checkup, and I notice I get grilled about things I never thought about when I was younger - any falls lately, any memory issues, how's the hearing. Fun times! I hope Tony is able to get to the bottom of his concerns.
I throw banana peels, coffee grounds, and eggshells into our garden, and it amazes me how it breaks down into compost. Your brew it is a great idea!
Oh no. so sorry to hear of Tony's fall. I hope they are able to figure it out. He appears very active, which is great. We notice with my FIL (89) that when he gets an infection, he tends to fall more. Sending you both hugs. Pretty cross stitch and stars as well.
I'm glad Tony continues to be on the move. I can understand the falls are worrisome. Does he get a chance to climb stairs? My mother has noticed that has helped her stability (she now makes sure to climb three flights of stairs three times a day). Wow - that water concoction looks pretty nasty - don't get that mixed up with your slow cooker meals! LOL
