Garden Talk, Norma's Appliqued Baskets, Animals-Wild and Companions Too

Do you know what this is?

Just in bloom or is blooming the right word for them I wonder. I was admiring this welcome spring sight while another sign of spring filled my ears...the peepers and frogs are making such a racket these mornings down by the pond.

One morning, I crept about because a Canada Goose was taking a nap on the far side. Like the little squirrel in the last post, I feared there was something amiss seeing it flat out in the grass like this.

But no, it aroused and flew off seemingly right as rain. That prompted me to look up how geese sleep and it seems it was unusual to see it in such a position. And I also learned they have one of those special brains where half can sleep while the other half is awake so they can sleep even when flying!!! What we couldn't accomplish with a brain like that!

I had Ned's family here for a long weekend- his mother, Abby, and brother, Petey. The three had a good time but I noticed Abby really showing her age. She is 8 now and did not run for the ball like she used to. Petey is still the most athletic of the three and still a very enthusiastic ball player. They are such loving dogs. Instead of one constant companion, I have three when they are here.

I noticed Abby and Petey alerted more to the critters around the yard. I guess Ned is so used to them he hardly notices now. This fox hung around the front bird feeders one day and the dogs went mad. If he heard them, it didn't bother him as he was busy eating seeds.  He looked in great condition and I love how thick and round the tail is. Their noses really are pointy. I often think that feature gets exaggerated in art. But what a beauty!
I didn't stitch as much on the weekend. But I've been appliquing since and thought I'd better take stock of this project. This is how many basket bottoms I've finished now for Norma's Basket Love. I'm finding men's shirt fabric...a lot of it, can lend itself well to repro looking projects.
Time to start thinking about the handles.

I've also laid a few more stitches on my England Quakers. I've abandoned sheepie and worked on this tower motif. I don't know what it represents and the resident Englishman also could not identify it so a little disappointing. England has a lot of towers. If you know please tell me.

I've been fooling around with my indoor plants. Repotted a couple and divided two of them. I filed my fingernails really short because I just can't seem to keep gloves on while I'm at the dirt. This is the time of year I need to look at the garden plants too with an eye to separating some as well. The Yucca, for one, has been overgrown for a couple of summers and needs pruning attention. It has just emerged from the snow and ice. Looking battered but still strangely green.
I'll have to read up again on how to tend to it. It's really old and I wonder how long they live. Still cool here this morning...I just checked and the wind chill is -4 so brisk when Ned and I head out in a few minutes.
Outside temp is the top one...wish it displayed wind chill.
It is spring finally now, as you see in the fox photo, it doesn't take long for the grass to start turning green. These new signs of blooming, the bird calls, the smells in the forest are all magical to me. I love them all.
At Not Afraid of Color, folks are sharing their memories of Easter baskets. I always got one of those flimsy coloured ones with fake straw and one big chocolate egg with some of those small colourful candied eggs. This was not a big deal to me as I didn't have a sweet tooth. I think I passed most of it along to my sister and brother but would have kept the basket to store things. What about you? Did baskets feature in your Easter?

Hope there is something magical in your day that delights you and pleases you!

Oh those three smiling doggie faces - so sweet! Interesting fact about Canada Geese which explains why they can fly for so long.

Pussy willows are so pretty! I can't seem to get them to grow in my soil and I don't see them at greenhouses/landscape stores around here. Apparently we don't have the right soil/climate for them. Foxes are so beautiful! Happy stitching!

Isn't it so nice when Spring arrives and everything wakes up and grows?! I love it too! What a gorgeous fox! We see them around my house but that one is in such great shape. Our weather keeps flip flopping. Some days are cold while others are getting warmer. I'm looking forward to warmer temps!

Pussy willow, Salix, and it has what they call " Furry catkins" , I have always liked this tree so much.

Wasn't sure if your question about what the first plant is was rhetorical or not. It's a pussy willow. I think the "flower" might be called a catkin. Things are waking up and turning green around here, too. Hellebores and daffodils are in full bloom. Hyacinths would be blooming except someone is eating all the buds before they bloom and pulling up some of the bulbs while they are at it. It was almost 70 degrees F here on Monday and it snowed this morning. Winter just doesn't want to let go.

Second comment, I read somewhere many years ago, run a bar of soap across your hand so soap goes under your fingernails, and that keeps the dirt out!!! Love the fox, and I guess dogs are like us, if you don't see an older friend for a while, you notice they are aging more so than when you see them daily or weekly.

How nice to have Ned's family come and stay for a few days. You took such a beautiful photo of the fox, Jocelyn, he certainly is a handsome fellow.

You shared an interesting fact about the geese and their sleep habits. I see Canadian geese at our lake on every visit. Quite often there are several sitting in the sun sleeping...or now, I should say, half their brains are sleeping. The photo of the fox is amazing. What a beautiful creature. Your baskets are coming along nicely, as is your stitchery.

Well how interesting. I have never seen a Canadian goose sleeping like that either. We have a lot around the lakes here. The fox is a beauty. You always capture such wonderful photos of wildlife. Your baskets are looking wonderful. I am in love with the color palette. Have a blessed day. Hugs.

I LOVE pussy willows! Used to cut some in the spring and allow them to dry in a vase for all year enjoyment!

I don't see many pussy willows around here. I miss them. The wind has been fairly chilly, but the sun is shining and that makes me happy. I took a bit of a walk around the garden beds and the tulips are pushing their way up.
What a gorgeous fox.

God bless.

Half asleep brain - I've had days that felt like that! LOL. Such a pretty fox - you got a great photo.

Pussy Willows! love them but don't have them here. In all my time living here in Arkansas I have only seen one fox and that was as it ran through the front yard right in front of the porch were we were sitting! Never saw one here again but 2 miles down the road my daughter sees them off and on. Glad to see even though it is chilly you are starting to see spring.

Love seeing photos of flora and fauna where you live. Pussy willows are so pretty, I used to pick branches (together with birch) to decorate with colors feathers and eggs for Easter (at the farm). The fox looks in perfect health. So beautiful! Hope all your outdoor plants survived the winter. Pretty stitchery and fun baskets. Have a great weekend!

Pussy willows! I have always loved them. The geese around here are pairing off and making nests. We'll be seeing babies before too long! You got a beautiful photo of that fox, Jocelyn. So glad you're starting to see signs of Spring!

That fox really does look so busy and healthy. I have seen a few in our fenced in yard but they've always looked mangy, skinny and unkempt. Apparently you've got better fox grub near you!! I didn't realize that you do needle work too. Your comment about mens shirts looking antique in quilts is so spot on! I often wish I would have only started repurposing fabric, rather than purchasing. It's too late for me now and honestly, I love vintage in other people's homes better than my own. Thanks for always sharing great items and keeping us abreast of what's going on in your world.

I meant bushy not busy...but that works too!

I haven't seen pussy willows in decades! Oh those adorable puppies, how nice to have those three together with their sweet faces. That fox is beautiful, looks like a painting! The basket bottoms are so pretty. I'm going to have to get myself to Goodwill to find some of those men's shirts!

I too have a hard time working in the yard/garden with gloves on. I have found that I can wear a pair of medical gloves and still be productive. They do tear rather easily, but they keep my fingernails cleaner and tend to be reasonable in price. I also use a pair under my gardening gloves when I’m pulling poison ivy to prevent getting that nasty mess. It took several rashes for me to find a better solution! Have a wonderful Easter weekend. I really love all your photos. We don’t see fox up close. Sometimes in the summer running across the prairie. Nor do we have pussy willows in the wild. Keep on sharing, please. Like Diann, we have Canada Geese pairing up also.

You seem to get a lot of sleepy animals where you live, Jocelyn. First the squirrel, now the goose. What next? A moose? It's interesting tat geese can let half their brains sleep. I wish I could do that!
Indeed, the fox is beautiful! It's amazing he's so close, though he does seem alert and aware.
Your baskets are delightful. Will the handles be the same fabric as the baskets?
I hope your weather is warming and the wind is dying down.

Awww - how fun to have the whole Ned Family - They are all so cute. Do geese get like that when there nesting? Kind of try to hide and hunker down? Enjoy the signs of spring!

You take the best photographs of wild life. I can't believe you were able to capture the fox. Boy does (s)he look stealthy. Those basket blocks are coming along nicely.

The Easter Bunny at my childhood home attached a different colored ribbon to my bedroom door than to my brothers. Then baskets and small gifts were hidden around the house. When we woke up we would hunt them down. The baskets were woven with raffia grass and contained a variety of candies. Toys were simple like a stuffed rabbit or coloring book. My favorite was a hollow egg made from sugar with one end cut off, leaving a hole just large enough to look inside where a little garden scene was set up.
