Two Thrifted Things, 4 at a Time HST's, Free Bird Pattern and Liberty's Too

Spring is trumping winter-at last- as I write this. I saw our first robin on Sunday last. And the little chipmunk has emerged from the underground winter den, the one I imagine lined with my sunflower seeds.

Just after the snowstorm this guy below appeared acting like this, a sure sign of spring. The flock of females that were with him had wandered off but he hung about showing off, just because he can, I guess. I'm curious about the mechanics of this- being able to lift all these feathers and change certain body bits to different and bright colours is amazing. Nature is always so interesting.

Our bank of ice/snow here at the front door is still there, sigh. It's in the shade so we joke at this rate it might be May before it's gone. Still below freezing temperatures overnight coaxing this thought. It also means we still can't order a new fridge because getting the old one out and a new one in over that snow bank would be dangerous. On the up side I'm getting in lots of steps going up and down stairs to the cold room. I hate talking on -and on, about weather and I know before too long I will be complaining about humidity....

I just read someone's post who shared the 102 hst's she had cut, prepped and readied for sewing. My mind just boggles at the thought of all that measuring and cutting in one go. I am in awe of you folks with your prolific cutting and machine stitching abilities! But it did spur me on to spend more time practicing accuracy machine stitching a few more of those 4 at a time HST's into blocks myself. So much stopping to measure and trim though! But here they are...I wish I'd pressed them for the photo but I think they look okay. I'm going to call this my closer counts project, LOL. I wonder what the name of this block is. I plan to make more in reds for the April RSC colour.

More about my Liberty's Birds, ...I think I showed this one prepped, ready to be stitched down before. I got sidetracked when I decided to swap out this brighter yellow fabric for the beige print I'd originally chosen. Why not go bright, I thought. Such nice easy applique. This is the Bluebird block.

That snarl of embroidery thread there is an example of thrifty me. I keep all leftover threads from old embroidery projects and have several unruly "balls" of them. I pull out the colours I can reuse in these applique projects. Yes, I know these should all be individually rewound onto bobbins or something (which does happen at the start of new projects), but no, not in this house.

Update.. this week I spent a few hours stitching and embellishing this block.

Just need to have a think about the eye, the feet and I also debated adding a wing. Do you think he looks a little bare? This is a first for me... With three blocks basically finished, I'm ahead on this project as per the SAL. Don't think I've ever been able to write that sentence before.

Someone asked what have I been cooking. I seem to be doing a lot of assembling these days. For instance, I put together a massive mostly vegetable soup in the Crock Pot (which I've been calling the slow cooker). I put in carrots, onions, celery, chickpeas, tinned tomatoes, chicken broth and sausage meat from a couple of leftover sausages. It made dinner with cheesy bread and then lunch the next day. And, btw, there are two great thrift finds in this photo below. The tablecloth, brought out for April, is April Cornell and a big find for me several years ago. Love the colours. It's getting that well washed/ well loved look.
I'm forgetting some things (unlike Tony whose brain is so sharp). Here is an example... this Royal Stafford bowl which I'm pretty sure was a thrift find as I can't think where it would have come from otherwise. I would have paid around $3.99 for it. It features many fruit and flower details and an old fashioned English haying and mill scene. I found an identical used one on Etsy for $24 Canadian. So perhaps it was a great find too???LOL
These loon babies look soooo comfortable they put a smile on my face and did you know they are called loonlets, which I find hard to pronounce. I also noted how vigilant the mother was. I'm discovering how wonderful most bird mothers can be...not all of them mind you, but by far the most.
I notice birds seem to be featured in this post. With that in mind I'll share the link to the cutest little chicken cross stitch free design at our generous friend's latest post...Melisa at Pinker n Punkin Quilting & Stitching. She also shares a beautiful Easter quilt in that post.

And it's time to share this video I've had in my queue for awhile...Corrine shows how to slow stitch a little bird. She approaches it like solving a puzzle. This method just requires basics...scissors, fabrics, ruler, needle and thread. Corinne's YouTube channel is called To Be Loved Treasures By Corrine.

The free pattern for this particular bird pattern can be found at Charming Tribe HERE. And I think I've seen it in various forms other places too.

I've been puzzled why I feel so much more energetic some days than others. As I've said I keep notes and they don't provide any real answers. I like to be up in the mornings an hour before sitting...that's easy here with chores and Ned but it feels like some mornings I have to push myself. I remember my younger grandmother saying this too. She said some mornings she felt like she could jump over the moon and then others barely move. So maybe it is a natural ebb and flow. What about you?

Easter plans are for a ham dinner. Anything special happening at your house?

Your little blocks are called broken dishes. I made several for a swap years ago and hope to start hand quilting the quilt soon. I love all your birds…the ones in your yard and the ones you sew. We had Easter brunch yesterday with my husband’s family. Otherwise, a quiet weekend. Happy Easter to you and Tony. Gail at the cozy quilter

as I get older I have less energy - I think we are about the same age - 72 here. I think it is normal especially in my case of not being able to stay as physically fit as I was just a couple years ago. I say don't worry about it - set new goals that are more realistic for your age and enjoy life. Could you possibly have depression? I know Tony's health has not been great and between that and the cold long winter it might be getting to you.

Loonlets hitching a ride or two, under her wing, or on top, and what colours and shading on the Mum, Fantastic video. Easter here, very quiet, even the street traffic was quiet.Taking it easy after 2 days in hospital with angina, tread mill test is finally scheduled for the end of May. That might make me have a big tidy up of all the "stuff" everywhere, and yes, it is almost all fabric.

Loving all the birds in your post. I saw baby turkey chicks on my walk with Bear this morning. I too have mornings like that - lots of energy and the will to get things done and other days, not so much. That blue plate reminds me of the set at my parents camp only in red with the pretty settings in the middle. I'll have to find them this summer while up there. Thanks for checking on me - it has been a week but this weekend is going much better. Wishing you a Happy Easter.

I loved the video of mother loon and the loonlets, they really are quite striking birds arent they. Easter is different this year for me, as we always went on a caravan trip somewhere, not anymore though. But I've got Gemma, Hot Cross buns and an Easter Egg or two to keep me happy. Plus time for stitching, our Autumn weather is so nice I've been sitting outside for a while.

Bummer about the fridge. I like your bowl. Reminds me of my grandmother's china. Thanks for the link to those bird blocks!

We're hoping to have family over tomorrow - pork loin instead of ham, and maybe a quiche. Happy Easter!

You're coming right along with your Liberty's Birds blocks. Did you decide to add eye, wing, and legs?
Your Royal Stafford bowl is beautiful. I wonder if they originally came in sets and each set was identical or each bowl/plate had a different scene.
I don't think I've ever seen a loon at such close range. Isn't she amazing with her stripes here and there and her dots that line up in stripes? Wow!
I'm not a morning person so jumping over the moon was never a consideration. Haha. But I do notice that some days I'm slower than others. (Always slow these days with this headache.) But I've wondered if it has something to do with the barometric pressure or another weather condition. I haven't researched that, though. Just a guess.
Happy Easter to you and your family.

Your Bluebird block is beautiful! That crockpot soup sounds wonderful. I recently gave my big crockie to Goodwill and purchased a smaller one. I'm eager to try it out. I have a 1-1/2 qt just for serving queso, and this one is 4-1/2 qts, so should be just right for us. Your tablecloth is beautiful, and I love that type of china with the old fashioned scenes. I fully relate to the "ebb and flow" of being energetic!

The loonlets are so sweet riding in Mama’s back! Your thrifty finds are great, I especially like the colorful table cloth, and your soup looks delicious! We are read6 for spring here too. The rob8ns are here, now we just need some RAIN; it was a dry winter.

That strutting turkey is a sure sign of spring. The quilt block units are looking good, your practice is paying off. I love the Bluebird block. He looks fine without a wing but adding one in a slightly light color might look nice, too. The vegetable soup looks hearty and delish, especially in your pretty bowl.

I've seen wild turkeys and was intrigued. When a few of them got up to fly, I was freaked out!!! Wow, nature is so weird and wonderful. Thanks for post. I get a kick out of hearing from life up in Canada. My Mom has a turkey platter, like your plate. She didn't celebrate Thanksgiving in Canada, and once in the US, she embraced it like wildfire! Those slow stitched birds look so lovely. I don't have patience for hand work right now, but perhaps in the winter I'll tackle a few. Your liberty birds are looking good. I laughed at your ball of leftover threads. I think we all have something that looks like that. No matter how I try with embroidery thread, it seems to have a life of its own!

So glad you are finally seeing signs of Spring, Jocelyn! That always helps to lift my mood and give me more energy. Your HST blocks look great! I don't like to cut and sew a whole bunch of blocks at the same time either - cut a little, sew a little is my way to do things usually. The bluebird block looks lovely to me. I love a crockpot vegetable soup - one of my favorite meals!

Oh my goodness I wish I knew about loonlets years ago because 100% I would have called my children LOONLETS if I knew that was a real word! They are 21 and 24 now but I just decided to start calling them mommy’s little loonlets anyway. Is that big bird with a bright blue head a TURKEY?! I can’t even fathom ice right now. It’s already getting hot and sticky and afternoon-icky in Southwest Florida, and Spring has definitely sprung here in North Carolina (I’m here with my mom this week). Birds are my favorite, at the bird feeder, in the yard, in appliqué or fabric prints, and the only ones I don’t love are the cowbirds that steal eggs from other birds and put their own eggs in their place, and the vultures because while I know they are necessary in an ecosystem they spook me out when there are a whole bunch of them in a tree guarding some awful rotting dead thing!

Love the "loonlets" sounds awesome, but like you say kind of hard to vocalize. Love your quilt blocks, and I am always amazed at how lovely you do this craft.

God bless.

Looks like the turkey has decided it is spring! How fun having them that close. Amazing video of the loons, they are so pretty. Cute stitched bird, but way too small for me! lol Your Liberty Bird is coming along nicely, pretty colors. Nice blocks too. Love your Royal Stafford bowl. I'm an early bird too, even if I would like to get at least one hour more sleep in the mornings. Our cat wakes me up 03:30 almost every morning; it's food o'clock!!! At that time I'm awake and can't get back to sleep. A nap is required in the middle of the day (almost every day).

Thank you for leaving such a lovely comment when visiting my blog. Your posts are so interesting. Your stitching projects, creatures, delicious soup and pretty plate. Hopefully warmer days are not too far away for you.

Mr. Turkey has quite an impressive display - hope he had the ladies flocking to join him.
I wonder if the lady who cut the 102 HST's has one of those cutting machines? That would certainly make it a whole lot faster and easier from what I understand.
Your soup looks delicious!
