March Weathers, Basket Blocks, Cross Stitching FLowers

Just one of March's many weathers...
March brings sugaring weather to our corner of Ontario as well though we won't be spying daffodils any time soon.  Here is a Tasha Tudor sweet image featuring the dogs she adored-corgis.

Can I cram it all into one post, was my thought this morning.  I have so much to say.

First off I'm busy hand stitching  Block 1, Evelyn, in the Book Club Hand Pieced QAL.  I love hand stitching but I didn't realize I would like and be pleased with the results of hand stitching pieced blocks.  I learned that last year when I was doing the same with the Sarah Fielke Grasshopper project; I liked the process and also was surprised with how strong hand stitches can be especially remembering to take a back tack stitch every so often.  As well it does not cause eye strain which my cross stitching seems to do.

My quilt as you go Dresdens panels are sewn together which went surprisingly smoothly.  I had two tucks that had to be released and resewn which was okay especially considering there are about a million seams in this. I still like the look of the piece as a whole.  It is so cheery! It is a good twin bed size at this stage.  Contemplating borders.

I finished my Swirling Flowers as mentioned in a past post. This was stitched on 32ct linen,
And chose this one, A Year at Hawk Run Hollow, to keep my cross stitching mojo going.  I got the threads all ready.
Started stitching the outline on a fabric I had on hand and realized this far into it
that, even though a large piece of linen, it was not near large enough for this design. Halted that and have ordered a fat quarter piece of 28 ct Wichelt Jobelan so no moving forward on this one till that arrives.  Eeek...did not realize just how expensive the larger pieces of linen are! But I'm anxious to get it and get a real start made, hopefully this week.

A bit of bother.  Then Pat at Life in the Scrap Patch mentioned to me what about joining this SAL hosted  by Lori Holt called Prim Village.  Lovely shades so I'm very tempted.  Thinking hard about getting the pattern for later on.

Also very tempted by the Prim Village quilt version which is available as a kit.  I always wanted to make a house quilt.

I began stitching together my baskets blocks! I made about 65 of them and this week I hope to stitch them into three panels much like I did with the Dresdens. This will help me manage the eventual quilting.
This is our monthly linkup for our international SAL hosted by Avis at Sewing Beside the Sea.

An interesting array of  hand stitched projects to see when you visit, being stitched by the kindest, most encouraging group of stitchers to be found.

I guess we'll do a Costco run tomorrow morning.  Seems like a lot of people are preparing for this virus to cause problems here too. Our Public Health have told us to have medicines and essentials on hand. I guess it can't hurt. What are you thinking about all this? Has it reached your neck of the woods?
So happy meanwhile to join Kathy's Quilts and Slow Stitching Sunday. Also linking with Kate at Life in PiecesSarah Goer Quilts, Home Sewn By Us and Quilting is More Fun Than Housework.

the virus has not reached my state thank goodness but they are saying to have at least 2 weeks supplies of meds and things you need on hand in case you need to stay home. I live outside of a small town area where people do not travel a lot for business so I am hoping no one will bring it here. I have stocked some food and things and this week I will be calling in my prescriptions to get them filled I have extra's so should have 45 days worth at that time so hopefully we will all be ok here. Do you have cases near you?
love your stitching and yes linen is expensive I ordered some for my daughter for her birthday and it was pricey - she usually gets the cheaper stuff at Hobby Lobby and what I got was a better quality but you do pay for it! Love your fans!

Linen in good quality is expensive down here. Yes, we have stocked up on essentials, I went to our local shop and bought a LOT of freezer paper, interfacing, some more batting, and a very fine iron on backing in case I do start some hand stitching. We recently had a couple who had returned from Italy, they were at their home for a few days, then flew down to the airport closest to us, spent some 5 hours or so somewhere? used public facilities I guess, touched multiple surfaces, flew home, went to 2 medical centres, then tested positive. We have stocked up on food, cat biscuits, toilet rolls, tissues, hand wipes, and I am going to make my own sanitiser with alcohol and aloe vera gel. Not in a panic, but worried. We are in the vulnerable age group now. So, if we do buy stitching and quilting essentials on line, this will be a good way to do it always, Collecting the Maple Syrup, a delightful image, love the dogs, two buckets on a shoulder sling, and warm clothes, so much in one drawing, love it.

Goodness so many wonderful projects to keep you stitching, not heard of the virus around here but the flu has been keeping the doctors very busy. Love the Tasha Tudor picture.

Jocelyn, you've been busy! I enjoyed seeing everything you've been working on. Your Dresden quilt looks wonderful and also the pretty cross-stitch piece you finished! I am going to participate in the new hand-pieced QAL, too - I loved it last year. This year's blocks look more complicated, though! I haven't started the first one yet. Enjoy your stitching today!

I hope your replacement fabric arrives quickly so you can work on that pretty piece. I love the floss colors.

There is a couple of confirmed cases in our province but the panic has hit. My sister tried to buy TP yesterday as she is almost out and there was none!

Your cross stitch and dresdens are beautiful. The Prim Village quilt is definitely tempting. I love houses.

Aah..."that" virus. Truly, it's the flu, one of many that people will perhaps catch this year. Many influenzas, including the Corona Virus will kill people, but then every year people die from some influenza or other. It's amazing how many people die from the flu each year. I suppose, yes have a supply of your medicines in store and most definitely practice safe hygiene methods but I think we should go about our daily life as before. If you do catch this flu or any other, then you should stay home until you are better. Of course if someone has pre-existing conditions or is older then they will be highly susceptible to this illness. Medical researchers will discover a vaccine for the Corona virus but next year there will be a new flu to battle; to discover a new vaccine for. Anyway.....you did ask.....=) As for your gorgeous stitching you have been enjoying.....love those dresdens of yours and your Prim Village kit is fabulous. Love all those houses. Hope you enjoy a lovely Sunday stitching your pretties.

Love your finished cross-stitch! I am a stitcher too and always have a few projects going. Hawk Run Hollow is going to be lovely and it should keep you busy for a while. I also like the idea of having a quilt and a stitched piece that match! I follow FQS on Instagram and I've seen several people stitching the houses - they look really nice.

Wow - all your projects look terrific!

Ugh, the virus. Gut says people are making more of an issue out of it than it really is, but it's bad enough to be cautious. We haven't stockpiled anything more than what we usually have in the pantry, but I am thinking about reordering my meds sooner than later.

I love that doggy art and your quilt is sure pretty! We have 5 potential cases of the new virus here in South Carolina, they are waiting for confirmation from the CDC. Have a terrific week.

Love your projects Jocelyn. I am not ashamed to say that we are taking the virus and the accompanying economic issues very seriously. We have no cases in our state at present, but they have started to show up in the neighboring states. We have a well stocked pantry, but are working on getting meds. My DH has a compromised immune system and delicate lungs, so I am taking no chances.

Your Dresden Plate quilt-to-be is definitely cheerful. And happy dancing over the completed Swirling Flowers! It looks beautiful. Do you know about the Fiber Talk podcasts? You can find them at wetalkfiber.com or on Youtube. They've been at Market in Nashville this weekend, sharing the newest charts and threads. So much to look forward to!

Your Dresden blocks look beautiful all sewn together. Definitely cheerful and spring-like! Your Swirling Flowers piece is beautiful, too. Such tiny, perfect stitches.
I don't even know what to think about the Corona virus. It seems like it hits and kills older people more than anyone else, and it seems like it pops up without warning or indication that it's in the geographic location it is. I'm going to just keep washing my hands, try not to touch others, and stay away from people with coughs -- as much as I can!

Enjoyed your post. My sewing machine conked out on me early last fall. I was almost finished with a maple leaf quilt I fumes a few days. No money on hand for repairs or a new machine. Thought and prayed about it. I have never cared for hand stitching "it's so slow. But needs must to get it done. The first hand done seeing I had to do over then it started getting easier then I began to enjoy the sitting and stitching. Got the squares done now to get it quilted. Now I know the joy hand stitching can be. Dresden is in the bear future the Lord Jesus willing.☺️

Your Dresdens look amazing.
Good luck with your new projects.
I love your header picture, I have that panel in my stash, might have to go look for it.

Your new project is looking great! The virus is spreading its way through Sweden right now. Just hope I want get it!

Gorgeous projects in the works! Love Swirling Flowers, it's very bright and bold. Last I heard we have one case of the virus in the state, but next week is spring break. Unless the warmer temperatures work to slow down the spread, I bet we have a lot more cases after everyone goes off and comes back.

Allie said...

Wow wow your dresdens are amazing - a really special quilt! You always have so many wonderful projects going on, girl. Not worried about the virus - more worried about the media coverage on it, lol - getting folks to panic. The flu kills WAY more people than this virus. I'm taking elderberry gummies every morning to keep it away - and not touching my face, and washing my hands a LOT! So far no cases in Michigan of the coronavirus, but lots of flu. Stay well hon!

This is the first time I have seen this blog. Interesting and informative. I enjoy the fact that so many of the projects can be used in other types of needlework.

Lots of gorgeous colourful projects here Jocelyn. Love your Dresdens, and the Swirling Flowers too. What is the piece you now have as your blog header?

My mom's name was Evelyn so that part of your post made me smile. Your swirling flowers are impressive! As for the virus - we always have a good supply of food on hand anyway but we did pick up an extra bit of toilet paper - just in case.

My goodness, you have been a busy bee. Nice progress on your projects. I looked at the Lori Holt cross stitch and considered it. I wouldn't buy the aurifil threads, though, as I thought that 89.95 was a bit pricey. Could convert to DMCs I am sure.

Hi Jocelyn! Wow, you've got lots going on. Your Dresden piece looks fabulous on the twin bed. I am enjoying seeing your cross stitch pieces (and Pat's as well). I haven't done any cross stitch of late but it is very tempting. I have always wanted to make a house quilt, too. That kit looks like a good one . . . I know it will make it on my list sooner than later. Thank you for linking up today. ~smile~ Roseanne

I love your Dresden blocks quilt. What method of QAYG did you use? I love the Prim Village quilt blocks too and hope you decide to make it.

Kathryn T said...

I too love your Dresdens QAYG blocks. I love those kind of quilts. Hand stitching I am finding is very relaxing and in these anxious virus times that's very important. It is very low key here in New Zealand but... people are beginning to stock up on basics. Kathryn Quilts

Wow you've been busy, Jocelyn! Your dresdens are absolutely gorgeous, as are your swirling flowers. The colors in that Prim Village pattern are really pretty -- you could do the cross stitch and the quilt! ;)

Angie said...

Jocelyn - if you do get stuck at home for an extended period, it looks like you have plenty of pretty projects to keep you busy! There are no confirmed cases in Montana, and our only provision so far as been some hand sanitizer to carry with us. Praying that efforts by everyone to do more hand-washing, etc., will help to minimize the spread.

I love your quilt top! It is definitely cheery. I look forward to seeing your progress on A Year at Hawk Run Hollow once your fabric arrives. Happy stitching!
