My groom is starting to take shape. I hope to finish him this week. I heard from Gitta's that the Autumn Quakers threads had to be backordered. I would love to get a start made on that piece before any thoughts of Christmas cross stitching get on the radar. But c'est la vie.
The sewist behind Love Laugh Quilt and host of the linky party Monday Making, Beth, is hosting a Christmas Red and Green Sampler Quilt Along on her YouTube channel, My Sewing Room. She has generously offered free PDF files plus videos posted for three blocks now. I like the way she works with traditional style patterns and gives them a modern look with fabrics, etc.
A Finish of a Small!
I showed a little piece that had some orange and black strips sewn together back in this post. It wasn't hard to guess a Halloween project was in the making. I didn't have a pattern as such but drawing a pumpkin isn't exactly hard to do. I just cut the wide mouth and the eyes without a template.
And found a piece of Black Cat on orange fabric for the backing and brought forward for the edging. I stitched simple in the ditch quilting lines through the strips. This machine sewn place mat is probably one of the few things I've ever made completely by machine. I had to practice to get the applique bit the right amount but other than that, it was pretty easy. Perhaps this will make it all hang together better when going through the washing machine.
I heard that almost 8 year old grandson, Robbie, liked it!
Please tell me this has happened to you...an ugly quilt story!
At the farmhouse back in 2015 I had the fun of embroidering large flowery patterns from a quilt along called Hazel's Summer Wildflowers.
Shelly Pagliai shared excerpts from her mother's diary of her life as a young girl and woman in the '50's in Missouri and offered the free patterns as a way of remembering her mom. The diary entries made for the most interesting reading (including the recipes for the food Hazel helped her Mom make) and I loved the patterns. I finished embroidering all six of the patterns and they sat for a couple of years. Then I sewed them together with blocks stitched in this rather brightly coloured bee and flower fabrics. I remember being excited to find fabric with bees and flowers and thought it would be perfect. But I hated the results.
I spent Saturday night unstitching them all.
Including parts of the stitched blocks too.Hazel's blog is still there and the patterns for an appliqued version as well...The Life of Hazel Ilene, as well as the patterns for a number of other quilt alongs. I'm interested in the Vintage Christmas Ornaments one, for instance.
Thinking of life at the farmhouse reminded me of the sumac lined driveway that turned brilliant red this time of year. I'll leave you with my dogs that I loved so much and think about all the time, Rex and Murphy, on that driveway one October back at the farm. Poor Hubby cannot say their names. 😢
I hope your week is off to a good start. Happy Stitching All!

some people miss their dogs for a long time, Melanie had gotten a new dog over a month ago as she missed her dog a lot and still she can say the old dogs name without tears in her eyes.
I hope you find the right fabric to go with those beautiful embroidery blocks that you have.
You did a good job with the pumpkin!
I know what you mean about thinking something is going to work and then...it doesn't. You will figure it all out and have two beautiful quilts.
The little pumpkin project is so fun, Jocelyn! Just right for a satisfying finish. I really love those embroidered blocks, and I'm so sorry that you didn't get the look you really wanted with your original design idea. Taking them apart and trying again is a wonderful idea! They deserve to be out where you can enjoy them!
I agree with the other blocks, too bright and busy, the stitched ones are really beautiful, I can see this will be finished so soon. Rex and Murphy, a memory to cherish, even if Tony cannot say so.
The wilderness embroideries are very beautiful, and it was a pity that you were not happy with the quilt. But it was a smart decision, and now there will be two new beautiful quilts.
Love your pumpkin! And, yes, I've been known to unstitch, but more often I just pass it on. We have all kinds of crazy mushrooms growing after a week of rain. At least the army worms appear to be gone as yards around here are getting greener again.
I totally love the pumpkin and I aways admire your art. Rex and Murphy look happy in that photo. Hugs to you and your hubby.
I too had dogs that I think of often, but it hurts to say their names. More than 20 years have passed for some of them. I hope we get to meet again some day!😢
Love the pumpkin very cute. Oh more times than I can count when it comes to making something just not right. But your stitching is gorgeous. I don't know what I will do if I lost my little companion. I would be heart broken.
The embroideries are charming. They remind me of elaborate doodles.
I'm still missing our Hannah and it's been more than two years now. Losing a beloved pet must be one of the saddest things in the world.
I love to watch Beth...she is so easy to listen to, and always makes interesting quilts.
I love that embroidery...that is a lot of work!
Yes, I have made what I considered an ugly quilt or two...the one I am working on now I call my okay quilt...it is not really ugly but is no beauty either.
I am afraid I am just too lazy to pick apart something that isn't working or I don't like. I have pulled apart a knitted sweater that just wasn't working though.
Love the pumpkin placemat.
God bless.
Looks like your little pumpkin head has a new home, since Robbie says he likes it.....
I must say your pretty embroidered blocks look much nicer now you have removed those bright pieced blocks, to my eye they just didn't go together. So I'll be waiting to see how you assemble them with some different fabric. Perhaps they dont need alternate blocks at all, just some sashing perhaps? But nothing that overwhelmes their beauty.
What hard work. I agree. Ripping it apart.
I enjoyed seeing your projects!
I love those embroidered squares but agree that the pieced blogs might be a bit overpowering for them. Good for you for taking the time to frog them - if it were me no doubt the entire thing would have gone into the donate pile.
Such a cute pumpkin!
beautiful embroidery!
A dog is so much a part of your family, the missing remains after they are gone….
Sometimes we got it all prepared in our minds but it just doesn’t turn out that way, I think it is a good decision to try other blocks, the embroidery is lovely.
Oh Jocelyn that Laura Ashley fabric looks like it will make those beautiful blocks just shine! Love the pumpkin placemat. I can remember when I used to draw pumpkins and those teeth all the time!
Well now you've got me interested in Beth's sampler QAL. I watched one of her YouTube videos and I really like her!
My heart aches for your husband. My husband still says "no more puppies" since our Buddy died in January, but I know he would open his heart instantly if one came along.
Thanks for linking up to To Do Tuesday. :)
Thanks for your blog, I really like it

Perfect timing to get that pumpkin all done! I just finished cross stitching a little mini tonight, now to figure out how I want to finish it.
Beautiful embroideries! I hope this new fabric works better for you. Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.
Another great post and those embroidered blocks are absolutely beautiful! Memories can be great, but sometimes leave us with sadness! Have a great day!
