Morris Strawberry Thief, UFO Scrappy Runner, A Question, Ugly Gardening Perks

Hello all! The Fur Papa and I are well and thankful to have our health and strength to see us through all our daily activities this week. That there is the first bread from our new bread machine. It worked so well-much quieter than the old and gave us a lovely loaf.

A quick question for you???? With a flying geese border, should the top and bottom be like the sides? I sewed a row together like this and now think it should be the same as the side strips. Is there a rule I wonder.
I love these Ginger and Honey Crystals packets...a little in tea is nice or just hot water for a warming drink to sip. I believe in the good properties of both ginger and honey ( but have to watch out for sugar no matter what form it's in of course).  We bought a huge bag at Costco.  Also love my Morris Mug.
I cross stitched this famous Morris motif on navy linen back in 2017 when I was living at the farm. I enjoyed the stitching so much even though the dark linen was a little challenging. The Strawberry Thief. My pattern was from a book I own but you can buy a small kit at Amazon that features the famous bird and strawberries.
I sewed together several table runners last year when I was in a yellow and also scrap busting mood.  I showed you a little table topper I finished using grey and yellow and some hand quilting.
At that time, I also stitched together more scraps to form a longer rectangular runner which has rested in a drawer unfinished since. Its' time has come! It is all layered and I'm adding quilting lines in between other stitching. The black and white polka dot print seems to suit the colourful front and is looking good for the backing and borders. I have a table in mind for this.
So happy I am able to practice ugly gardening. Many birds find a little nourishment throughout the winter in my garden leftovers.
Including the ever present American Goldfinches whose colour palette up close is so pretty.
We are off to do a few chores, banking and the like. Hope your Thursday is going well too!

What a lovely embroidery!
Flying geese - don't worry about rules, do whatever suits your taste:-)
But I would say it would look better if the top was the same as sides, but as I say - it is your quilt! xx

I haven't seen the honey ginger crystals sounds good. The log cabin blocks are so nice it has been awhile since I made a log cabin quilt. I think your flying geese border looks just right - I don't know if there are any rules on it but you got them to line up nicely

I think the most common way to set flying geese is for them to be presented the same way around the borders, sort of 'flying in the same direction' or whatever. That being said, I'm a huge proponent of making quilts the way that we think looks best! Let the quilt weigh in and just do what your instincts tell you to do!:)

There are no quilt police in your home, dont let them in if they knock on your door. I agree with the others, do what suits your eye, and what you are happy with. But, being a Libra, I'm happier if things are in balance I'll never be in the improv camp, but that's just me.
The strawberry thief image is certainly a famous one, and so pretty.
Have a wonderful week, and give Neddy a cuddle from me.

I like your flying geese just the way they are, Jocelyn! The Strawberry Thief is a pretty design, too. I love your scrappy little mats, like the gray and yellow one. They are so fun to make! Enjoy stitching this next one.

The bread sure looks good. I bought a fairly expensive bread maker and it didn't work worth a hoot so I started making it the old fashion way. Love that The Strawberry Thief!

Glad the new bread machine is working great. Love your cross stitch. Do whatever you like for the flying geese. All flying around going in the same direction, or as you have it now, whatever you fancy. There are no quilt police. :D

I agree with Audrey's comments. The flying geese will look fine whichever way you orient them, your quilt - your choice! Never had a breadmaker, but we do have a new sourdough starter that seems like it is going to survive here, so planning some bread real soon. Biscuits and pancakes have been mighty fine!

I would continue the geese to fly around the quilt. That's my preference, anyway. They're beautiful, regardless! That mug is so pretty. Happy little goldfinch. I haven't seen them recently, but I hear them chirping in the morning.

I've seen hundreds of antique flying geese quilts and anything goes. Your quilt is lovely and you should do what please your eye! I love your Strawberry Thief! Amazing!

I think your geese are flying just right. I love Strawberry Thief and your cross stitch looks wonderful against the dark background.
Have a wonderful weekend Jocelyn!

I think the only rule there should be in quilting is to do what makes you happy. If you like the side flying geese border as is then keep it. If it bothers you, change it. You are the designer, so what you decide goes. I love your mug and the coordinating cross stitch. Then again, I love anything with indigo blue. That little goldfinch is beautiful. We have robins, cardinals, blue jays and sparrows mostly around here. Have a great weekend.

Re the flying geese question - I think most I've seen have them 'flying around' the outside.
Your bread looks tasty. Since covid hit we haven't been buying bread - a friends gave us a sourdough starter and Resident Chef has been making all our bread, buns and the like. So much tastier than store bought bread!
As for ugly gardening, I've seen numerous posts on facebook begging people not to clean up their gardens too soon in order to allow the bees and beneficial insects to complete their winter hibernation without disturbance. We need to do everything we can to help the bees to survive.

I like leaving the summer debris for the winter critters! It's so cold.
I love a border the same all around, but you should do what you like.

I don't think that there is a rule for flying geese borders. It is always a matter of how you like it to look. The sideways facing geese move the eye around the edges of the quilt while the up facing geese you chose make it look more like the quilt is resting on top of a consistent bed of geese. It is lovely either way!

Anything goes! If you like your flying geese then leave it. I think it's lovely!

Seems as of the consensus is to do what makes you happy! And I, for one, am a proponent for that line of thinking. A Morris mug like yours would make me happy too! And the cross stitch is wonderful. Hope your evenings are enjoyable hand quilting on your runner with the polka dot binding. So pretty! I'm glad you practice "ugly gardening". It makes for interesting garden "art" in the winter and the birds and critters are happier.

Your Strawberry Thief is magnificent! As for the flying geese border, I think I usually see them arranged so the geese appear to be flying all the way around and around the quilt. However, one of the interesting things about antique quilts is that, before social media and the Quilt Police, there was a lot more variety in the way quilters put their quilts together and less worry/awareness of "rules." For example, if it was meant to be a bed quilt, one border would often be attached "upside down" (from our modern perspective) so that it would appear right side up when placed on the bed. Anything goes, really! If it looks good to you and yields a finished quilt size that works for you, go with it!

If you like the flying geese that is what counts. I am a bit OCD so would have them going in the same direction.

God bless.

What a lovely cross stitch project, Jocelyn. I don't see anything wrong with the flyingeese. It is your quilt and you make it as you like best. Do what makes you happy! This is what count! Hugs

No rules in quilting... the birds can fly wherever they want to :)

Lovely pictures. As to the flying geese, I do whatever I feel like. I would like to find some of those ginger things. I guess I will have to go with my daughter the next time she goes to Costco.

Flying geese - I tend to see them the same way all around or on 2 sides..... but I have to say I really like how you have them set in the photo. Unique and truly yours (and it looks great!).
Beautiful shot of the finch - they truly are beautiful with all the subtle colors. The bread looks heavenly. So glad the new machine worked out well for you. Have a wonderful week.

What rules?? Make your own. Have fun. Play. Do what makes you happy. It's fun to try different ways of making things.
Love the strawberry thief counted cross stitch.

Take care

Your cross stitch and your quilting is so lovely! You do such wonderful work. I have had a bread machine for many years. It is such a great help in kneading the dough. Such a wonderful little goldfinch. You captured it's photo so well!

There is nothing like homemade bread. I make it for my husband each week which he appreciates. But, sometimes, I just really want some sourdough bread so I keep it in the freezer and just get it out one slice at a time. The strawberry thief on that royal blue background (or is it navy?) is wonderful. As much as I love quilting, there is nothing like stitchery to please the eye.

When I have a flying geese border, I have always placed them as if the "geese" were flying in the same direction around the quilt, all points going the same. I don't know about any rules, but that is how I've always done it because I think it looks nice. Love that quilt you are making. So much work and many hours must have gone into it.

Love the embroidery! So cool that you have the mug too. I think your geese border should fly whichever way they want to. You might start a new trend with this layout. One never knows. 🙂 Your UFO table runner looks great too. Enjoy the peaceful stitching. ;^)

Lovely post with many photos to enjoy!! As many have already said, feel free to make your quilt the way you want!!! However, you may want to do a little mock-up of how the geese would look flying left across the top, down, the left side, etc. to see if aesthetically you like that better before making a final decision.

Spotted you on a mutual friends blog, so thought I'd pop in to say hi. It's always fun to meet new bloggers. You're keeping busy with nature and with your sewing. LOVE the embordered bird.

The quilt police will not come get you if your borders do not all match. Make the quilt the way You want to, make the quilt YOURS.

Your scrappy runners are so sweet. I need to get back to sewing some when I'm finished these two quilts.

I love your embroidered quilt, with the flying geese borders. I like them running all around, but your version is pretty too.
The loaf looks good, and I love the mug and the embroidery ;)
Thank you for sharing such lovely photos, and linking up!
