Free Patterns, Lone Star Medallion Progress, Cutest Thief

Doesn't he look so innocent!
Meanwhile, he is a thief, albeit a cute one. He is quite adept at robbing bird seed from whatever style feeder I use, even those labelled "squirrel proof". Luckily, I don't mind. All creatures deserve a little something to get them through our cold winters. This time of year, the furthest from anything growing, there's not much left of nature's food.
This below made me smile; "my" squirrels still run away when I appear but the moment my back is turned, they are instantly like magic at the feeders again.
I'm feeling happier with how this below, the EPP Lone Star Medallion, is looking.  Colour choices and placement are certainly important for a medallion and, being me, I'm still second guessing where I've placed the darks and lights. One more diamond to stitch...maybe next week that will be a priority. Btw, the three triangles on the tips are actually real red, not this burnt red looking colour showing.
LeeAnna at Not Afraid of Color's prompt this week is what would we like in a dream studio. I've moved around a lot and lived in all kinds of accommodations. I've never been one to dream about a space that would be just mine. But if I'd done that I probably would have wanted a space for a little library with big wingback chairs and a nice writing desk. I do wish my present sewing space was big enough to hold a cutting table though. But other than that, I'm pretty happy and grateful for what I have available to me in this house.

Thursday's Three Free

Planted Seed Designs is home to Gerri Robinson, a designer for Riley Blake Designs. She has interesting free patterns like this one called Chinese Checkers... It involves something called  a Triangle in a Square block that when aligned together forms stars.

I followed up with this tutorial video showing how to make that block and got lost at the idea of using rulers. But many of you are adept at it.  Emily does make it sound sort of easy in this video. She has lots of other tutorials at her own site, Homemade Emily Jane
You'll find more links to Gerri's books, kits, patterns and fabric lines for Riley Blake there as well.

I love this pattern called Berry Patch from Laundry Basket Quilts. The free PDF download is found HERE. What a pretty table topper this would make.

I became quite taken with the look of a quilt made up of a block called Clown's Choice. I found free download instructions at Meadow Side Designs Link Here. Very simple geometrics (yes I could sew it!) but the combination gives an interesting overall look to a project. Two basic colours, a light and a dark but they also show how to incorporate a third colour into the design for another "look".

And for my fellow slow stitching friends...Smart Cross Stitch has many pages of free cross stitch designs for special occasions and whimsical topics too. This caught my eye.  A small project that uses cross stitch and pretty Algerian Eyes stitches which look complicated but are easy.
The sun is shining brilliantly but not warm enough for any melting today alas. But the daylight is lengthening and the quality of the light is changing, definitely brighter. Hope everything's brighter in your world too!

Jocelyn , my ideal sewing and quilting room would be large, one room, not spread in 2 rooms and machine in the smaller lounge, with a cutting table inside. Mine is large and on the outside verandah, that has a clear roof, so good daylight and sheltered from rain, but not the wind. Love the Lone Star layout, I am not game to try that now.As a change from quilting, am going to have more fun with some merino slivers and wet felt some scarves.I had kitsets from Ashford for Christmas, and so enjoyed something new.

The squirrels always seem to find a way to empty the bird feeder! Your Lone Star Medallion is amazing. I really like the colors.

Squirrels certainly are cheeky little creatures, I remember being so thrilled when I saw my first one on a trip to England. Busy little things, running up and down the trees in a park in York.

I love that Edyta table topper pattern. If I had the ideal sewing room I would love a wing back chair also with a small table next to it with a pretty lamp and room for hand stitching items. I have never had one and always loved the look of them - with a footstool also! I could care less on most other things that would go in the sewing room as I think I have enough of all of that.

Your squirrel is adorable! If you have access to YouTube, check out Mark Rober, he has 3 videos on squirrel "Olympics", they are hilarious 😂. I admire your EPP skills. I need to figure out how to do that too. Hugs, Kara

I think your color choices and placement are perfect! We have a Droll Yankee feeder and it is the only one we've used that is truly squirrel-proof. It spins them off! Look at their website for a demo.

Your Lone Star medallion is beautiful! Love your squirrel tales.....we have been very amused by squirrels on our visits to Canada as we don't have any here, and they are amusing to watch.

Hi Jocelyn! Hmm. I think your additions to the water you use for your plants make sense. Especially the vegetable water - I've always heard that boiling leaches out some of the vitamins and other goodness. Your plants look remarkably healthy and happy. Here's a late HB wish for Ned. {{Hugs}} a bunch for you. ~smile~ Roseanne

We had to stop feeding seed to our birds because they were knocking it onto the ground below and attracting the squirrels who would either climb the brick wall (three storys up!!) to get to the feeder itself OR when they were feeling foolish they would chew the wiring in the cars in the parking lot. It was a real (and costly!) problem so we decided we would no longer feed seeds opting to only put out suet.
Your Lone Star quilt is looking wonderful. I remember my grandmother making that pattern.
Thank you for the links - I especially like the 'Berry Patch' design.

The Lone Star looks perfect! I love your colors and fabrics. I love watching the squirrels in my yard. There is a few of them that live in an old tree. I see them chasing each other and running in and out of their home. Love the freebies. Thank you!!

Your Lone Star Medallion is looking fabulous. I love watching the squirrels. They have always eaten from our feeder, but it isn't at all squirrel proof.

The squirrels love the peanuts and bird seed! The Shepard Hooks from which we hang the feeders at the beginning of the season is coated with Vaseline. They will not climb up the feeders. We feed them peanuts and they are all very creative with them. Gerri Robinson designed a mystery quilt for MCCALLS Quilting magazine in 2007?which was a fun one to make. Love your Lone star EPP. You can always turn the diamonds around to see if the other colour way works more for you. It looks absolutely beautiful so far, have a great week. We are hoping the groundhog was right for an early spring… too much snow still falling.
