Hand Quilting, Free Patterns, Fair and Bird Sounds

I step out on the veranda quite often during the day. Sometimes to smell the air with the hope that it is clear enough (free of smoke) to take a walk. But I always stop awhile and listen. Summer's song is still strong...birds tweeting and singing. Occasional squirrel chitter or blue jay squawk. I tell myself to remember this in winter. My Dad became a little hard of hearing in older age and Mom always said how sorry she felt for him because he could no longer hear the songbirds singing.

Speaking of which, the Song Sparrows are home building. This one had taken a bath in the bird bath then very industriously went about collecting dried grass bits. I watched it make many trips doing the same thing over and over; it must have liked the particular grass it was finding there between the stones. A heartening fact is that these tiny birds can live over ten years in the wild.

In the sewing room I am pleased with how I've used my time. I've been able to move a few projects forward and as we all agree, every stitch counts. The Rainbow Neighbourhood has been layered up and basted, ready for the quilting lines. I used the thinnest batting I had. Surprising though you can see through the layers in the light.
I really don't understand why the sashing fabric is just showing as white only. Here are the first hand quilting lines where you can see it clearly has enough black flecks to be noticeable.

I'm going to set getting the hand quilting on this done as my July OMG at Elm Street Quilts.

Here again is a photo of the three hand sewn blocks that didn't make it into the quilt. I'm wondering what to do with them.  I spied those leaves on the ground yesterday and they looked so much like the colour of the beautiful girl's dress in the Leighton painting seen here. They were wet at the time and just shone against the greens of the forest floor. I wonder did he take his inspiration from nature.
Commenter AnnetteJ told me this colour is called Saffron. Thanks Annette!

LeeAnna at Not Afraid of Color's prompt this week is about county/state fairs. Fall fairs are very common in this area of Ontario. In addition to the special rides and food venues, they include farming attractions such as tractor hauls, horse and wagon rides, and various farm animal shows.
The longest running fall fair in Ontario (with Covid interruptions) is in the little town of Richmond not far from here. I attended it for awhile and older grandson went every year with his dad while growing up. One time when the fair had just started, I was driving him-5or 6 years old at the time, and he asked me to pull over, stop and lower the windows. He said he just wanted to hear the fair. So we sat there while he took in the sounds of the rides, music, folks talking and laughing, animals neighing, etc. Fair sounds are happy sounds that's for sure.
Any special memories about fairs you would like to share?  How about the food? You know I love reading about food. :D

My scraps are mounting and I'm looking about for scrappy projects and that in turn leads me to patterns to share with you.

At Prairie Moon Quilts you will find a bank of  great free patterns. I've marked the Happy Tree block. Shelley is also the writer behind The Life of Hazel Ilene blog that I read and loved. At that post you can find the link to her free download of another vintage style Apple Tree quilt block. Another that uses small scraps and I love it too.
And an aside to this is I embroidered the blocks for Hazel's Summer Wildflowers, a free stitchalong quite a while back; mine eventually made it to a quilt flimsy stage.
Here is one of the blocks...I loved stitching this- the fancy version as Shelley called it. Here is the link to Block 1. The free downloads are still available!
Hope your week has been a good one and your weekend will be even better!!

Such a sweet wee sparrow! I love listening to the birds (when we can have the windows open that is) and often get awakened by a little Jenny wren singing his/her heart out.
Re what to do with the leftover blocks...how about using them in the back?
Fairs - when I was a teenager I loved going to the fair mainly to see the hand crafts and also to watch the glass blower at work. I saved my allowance for an entire year so I could buy one of his pieces.

Your Rainbow Neighbourhood is looking wonderful, Jocelyn! I love the close-up of your quilting and the pretty sashing fabric. Mine is still hanging on the ironing board, waiting for some attention! That's such a sweet thing your grandson said about wanting to hear the fair - love it! Beautiful embroidery design - there are lots of interesting stitches in it. I love your little song sparrow photo, too. We've had house sparrows interested in our birdhouses here, but I haven't seen song sparrows.

I don't really have special memories of the county fair - but I really liked going to the Wisconsin state fair two years running back in the early 70's with my friends and my sister - we had a blast - it was held in the city we were living in at the time Milwaukee.

Since you asked. I love county fairs, especially the small rural fairs that still feature 4H kids and their animals, the home economics buildings with their demonstrations and exhibits, quilts and other needle arts, etc. Carnival rides and fair food I can do without!

I'm like your dad now - my hearing is not good enough for me to hear that birds I used to hear. It makes me a bit sad, but I'm glad I can still watch them! It's been so much fun watching all the Rainbow Neighborhoods popping up - yours is a pretty one! Are you part of Prairie Moon Quilts 350 block project? I'm going to have a low count for June!

The photo of the Song Sparrow is beautiful. I love your neighbourhood houses quilt, and wow on hand quilting it! The comment about your Dad not being able to hear as well made me sad. My Mom missed being able to hear as well as being almost blind in her last years. And your grandson wanting to hear the fair - how sweet! Your Flaming June has haunted me since I saw it on your other post. I LOVE it and downloaded the photo. I've decided I'll steal your idea and make a quilt at some point - lol!

We hear so many bird songs now that we've moved to the mountains. Your Rainbow Neighbord is so pretty and it looks almost like stained glass in that picture. What kind and size hoop do you use when hand quilting. I'm thinking about trying it on a small project. I've been to a state fair but I loved going to the county fairs. The story about your young grandson is super sweet. Life can be wonderous through the eyes and ears of babes.

I love those pieces. You inspire!
The smoke is bad, and I have been staying indoors. It is such a shame as our seasons are so short.
Of course, I feel badly for those who are affected by it.

I didn't know the Song Sparrow could live 10 years. I love those little birds. Their warbling song is just beautiful. Lately I've been hand quilting a little project too. Love your houses and they will look even better with your stitches. Good "Likes" here!

A great photo of the tiny sparrow! They flit around our neighborhood, but usually I cannot get a photo! I think the hand quilting on your Rainbow Neighbourhood quilt is lovely! I admire hand quilting so much! I attempt it now and then, but get quickly discouraged!

I had no idea any sparrow could live that long. I haven't posed a monthly OMG in ages! Your neighborhood looks great. Scraps! As soon as I finish this quilt, I plan to do several scrappy projects just for me! :-)

I've received so much enjoyment from watching each house In the neighborhood receiving its day in the spotlight. Now to be treated to the flimsy is pure joy.

When I am not making blocks for the RSC challenge, I often opt to thread paint animals. I am so taken by your photo of the sparrow. Would you be willing to send me the image for use in my work? Here is an example of my work in progress for a piece I did last fall. https://www.gwynedtrefethen.com/life-of-an-artist/decisions/

I'm loving you Neighbourhood quilt and hope the hand quilting goes well. Thought I'd left a comment when I saw this on Sandra's linkup, but evidently didn't. The embroidery is very, very nice. Take care & hugs from down under.

I love LOVE your embroidery! So pretty! I've been wondering how you are faring with the smoke from the fires. Keep yourself safe! We often can smell the wood smoke even down here in Pennsylvania! The rainbow house quilt is spectacular! It's an amazing piece and so unique! Have a great day and Happy Canada Day!

Jocelyn, wow! What a beautiful embroidered block! You've got lots going on ... enjoy your slow stitching day! :)

It's been forever since I've been to a fair. As a child I liked the rides, as an adult, the needlework and craft exhibits. And music. I remember one with an Ecuadoran band where I sat and listened for over an hour.

You and I are kindred souls…I love listening to Nature’s song as she greets me! Yes, it was so sad when Daddy was not longer able to hear the waterfalls in our respective ponds.
You are a fabulous photographer! The sparrow photo and the Rainbow Neighbourhood quilt are lovely!
Have you considered framing those hand stitched blocks? They are so lovely!
My favorite fair food: funnel cake!
THANK YOU for sharing Hazel’s Summer Wildflowers! They seem challenging, but oh so beautiful! Who can resist? I’m off to download and print them out! They’ll be the perfect project to take to San Diego!

What a great photo of that sparrow and I had no idea that one could live ten years. That is a long time!
Congratulations on getting your Rainbow neighborhood layered, basted and beginning to quilt it!

I loved hearing the story about listening to the fair sounds - so sweet! I enjoy fall fairs, enter quilts in a couple every year, and judge at 4-6 fairs in my area. It's a wonderful time of year!
Your embroidery is just exquisite - I made the photo as large as I could on m computer to see the details. You must enter this in a fair!!

And I forgot to mention the glorious hand quilting project - total swoon over that!

That embroidery piece is just stunning as are all your projects. Good luck with your goals, especially the hand quilted neighborhood.

I love watching birds flitting around our bird feeder -- they can empty it in 36 hours. Your sparrow picture is wonderful. I am sad to report that the links to the free patterns doesn't seem to work. (Or maybe it's my computer....) I was hoping to pick out a few new ones. Sigh. Aren't error messages fun?

ARGh -- throw out my previous post as it worked when I clicked on the picture -- just like it said to. Thanks for the link - I liked the Dashing pattern and saved it for a later date. Good luck on your hand quilting. The houses look wonderful.

Your rainbow neighborhood is beautiful! I too love listening to the sounds of the birds chirping and chatting with each other. I am loving the loon calls on the lake this week and the hummingbirds fluttering wings. It is too hot to be outside most of the year in Florida. Hope the smoky haze has lessened and you can enjoy some outside time.

I’m catching up in reverse this time! My June was a total wreck, so I got way behind on blog reading. Your house quilt is a beauty, have a great time hand quilting. I hope you meet your goal to finish it this month. The embroidery you shared is really stunning; I am so tempted, but trying to continue finishing things for awhile longer!

We have been enjoying the fresh berries too, even put some in the freezer for later. Your July blocks are lovely, glad to see them in the open air again!
