My Raven portrait. He was glowing in the early morning sun. They visit the feeders and front garden and actually let the little red squirrels boss them around. I 'm holding my breath for the day that will not be such wise behaviour on the part of the squirrels.
I've been in the garden a lot lately. It reminded me I need one of those fancy kneeling benches that flips to an actual seat like Karen at Quilts...Etc. showed in one of her spring garden posts. I was very busy with pulling out the surprising amount of weeds and all the old plant debris, etc. from last season. But it is such a good feeling to see the beds cleaned up.
Being in the garden reminds me about areas of the property that are neglected and something should be done about. Like the rock garden for instance. I bet it was beautiful in its day but is just an overgrown mess now with the odd little bloom popping up. Also the landscaped bed the Smoke Tree and Lilac bush are in.There were more flowers there the first time I saw it just before we bought. The squirrels had fun removing the bulbs I think. But I just don't have the energy or will to do much more with either of these. Each summer season it takes all my gardening time keeping up with weeding what I do have on the go. And playing around with setting a few seeds each year which is the fun stuff. This year, three trays and four pots.
Mother's Day was celebrated on the second Sunday in May here in Canada and the United States. I was curious about quilt blocks with Mother in the name and had found these with a little digging. Featured at the Patchwork Square site. I forgot to share at the time. All such pretty blocks.
I realized lately that I am a genuine one stitch at a time stitcher. That is where my real joy in stitching comes from. Whether it is crocheting or knitting, embroidery, applique or cross stitch. It is forming/laying each single stitch that gives me the most satisfaction. Like stitching my tiny bride her wedding dress.
Veranda stitching!
I would love to see this block finished this week and get a start on July which would give me the illusion of being "ahead". And July's block features a sailboat which is fun.
The Green House for my Rainbow Neighbourhood was a bit of a love/hate affair. I waffled on the mottled look of the fabric, the size of the circles in the other fabric, etc. I had only a small amount of that fabric and having those two big circles side by side on the eave was the only way to get the bits I had left into triangles. Whichever, whatever, it is finished. Funny how each of these houses has elicited different feelings in me. Here is a front veranda photo.
We have been riveted by the last episodes of Succession. Amazing on so many levels. It's not often you come across a series where each episode is better than the one before. I've been enjoying watching videos of psychiatrists/film technicians and the actors discussing motives, personalities, scene setups, etc.-all of it elaborate and steeped in meaning. Very interesting.
And while not exactly in awe and also lighter entertainment, we are enjoying the performances in Fatal Attraction. I remember the movie so well. Do you?
Lots of outside chores will fill spare moments this week. I've received some fun mail I'll share next post. Meanwhile, hope you are happily occupied as well.

We have been watching Fatal Attraction, but I forgot about it for a week, and you've reminded me that there are new episodes! Your raven photo is beautiful - we get them in our neighborhood now and then, too. Your current cross-stitch project looks lovely, Jocelyn! I agree that this kind of stitching is so enjoyable - one stitch at a time you see the design emerge. Happy gardening - whether it's weeds or seeds!
Small world! I just ordered one of those kneeling benches from Lee Valley and it was delivered yesterday. I don't have a garden but have a real problem getting up and down when I need to do anything in lower cupboards. I think it's going to be a huge help!
Beautiful photo of the crow - I can 'see' that made into a quilt!
(ps. noticed that the two of the three links to the Mother's designs doesn't take you directly to the patterns)
I know exactly what you mean by the gardens looked so much better years ago and how all the time now any more is weeding, weeding, weeding. Never getting ahead of that chore and so some beds get left behind. Oh well, such is life! Haha! Love your raven picture, he looks so stately. Enjoy your day, stitch by stitch. Now that's what life is all about!
the garden kneeling pad really comes in handy - you won't regret getting one. All your stitching looks great! I have not watched Succession I will need to check it out as I have heard a little of it now and then over the past year and the Fatal Attraction.
I don't know where you get the time!
I would love to sit on my porch and work, but the bugs are sooooo bad! I loathe wearing bug spray to weed.
I admire your needlework. Well done.
What a gorgeous bird your raven is! And the photo portrait is perfect.
I had not thought about quilt blocks with the word mother in their name. Fun!
Your cross stitch is coming along beautifully. So much detail!
I've reached the point where gardening no longer brings much pleasure and thus, I'm contemplating where to reduce the plantings. Of course, I've been doing that for several years now without much progress. But dying shrubs, invading grasses, the weird weather and an aging body are all factoring in the process now.

I hear you about property management being an increasing challenge, Jocelyn! Fortunately I find my brain adjusts to the limitations of my body. Oh boy, do I love my bench/kneeler that I bought years back from Lee Valley Tools. I use it a lot -- weeding, changing my car tires twice a year, washing floors, painting and as a handy seat if a neighbour stops by to chat. Thanks for the video recommendations and by the way, I'm loving the Elizabeth Strout books you liked. Just finished 'Anything Is Possible'. So well written!!
Beautiful Raven!!!! We do not have them in South Texas as far as I know! Love the cross stitch you are working on. I was hiding behind the door when they passed out green thumbs! Darn!! Enjoy and have a great week! And I love all the Mother's blocks you posted! Neat! Hugs
One stitch at a time, that's your way and you enjoy it. I'm like that with any hand quilting I do, never could get the hang of loading a needle up, so it's stab stitching for me. Not that I do much hand quilting these days, and it's so much easier doing big stitch quilting. Whatever makes us happy!
We had a raven in the tree and the robins, sparrows and a junco were busy chasing it around. I think it was too close to some nests.
Love the tiny bride.
God bless.
That raven really is gorgeous! Your stitchings are always so beautiful and the green house is special too. We haven't watched Succession yet but it's on our todo list.
You have such a pretty view from your veranda, and I love your cross stitch project. Good luck with your seeds. I wish I had room in my little garden for a kneeler - lol! I like your green houses. Thank you for the link to Patchwork Square - I like the organization of the website much better than Quilter's Cache (which I appreciate being free, but it is SO hard to find a block there!)
Veranda stitching is the best! We Canadians have to make the most of the good weather.
again, your photo of the bird, I must paint that! LOVE your light capture on him
LeeAnna
My mom had one of those kneeling benches and I now have it at my house. Just a thought, why don't you put a slew of bulbs under the smoke tree this fall. Then you will have pretty flowers to look at in the Spring and it is a one time chore. I like your green house and that bride's dress is so pretty. Enjoy all of your stitching!
What a lovely shady spot for some stitching! Who knew about all those mother blocks??? Gail at the Cozy Quilter
Lovely place to stitch. I wouldn't be able to use a kneeling bench because of my bad knees. I have this little rolling seat with a compartment to hold my tools. I still have a fair amount of cleanup to do, which hopefully I can get a bit more done before my guests on Thursday and Friday come. I have been cleaning up previously unused part of my yard, which was John's boatyard for many years. I love your raven picture, my family has a close connection to ravens or crows.
That Raven is gorgeous! I love your house for Rainbow Neighbourhood and your cross stitch project is SEW pretty! Love that little white country church! Thanks for sharing on Monday Musings!
I cannot keep up with the outside work at all. It makes me sad, but time and energy are finite and I need some time to stitch! Love the bride you are stitching and outdoor stitching is just such a treat! Thanks so much for linking up to Slow Sunday Stitching!
Outdoor stitching is the best! I am not keeping up with my gardening at all this year - I just would rather stitch with any extra time I have! Thanks so much for linking up to Slow Sunday Stitching!
You are such a gifted photographer, Jocelyn! Thanks for those Mothers themed blocks, they are pretty and a nice change!
Wow, this raven is gorgeous, beautiful photo! I love your embroidery too, this little lady is very pretty. Have fun stitching while sitting on the porch!
Thank you for sharing, and linking up!
Jocelyn your raven is so pretty. Mine here don't have that lovely blue tinge. Its fun to see the progress on your stitchery. The bride is so pretty. I love your house and even if the circles are close it is a beautiful finished block. Thank you for linking with To Do Tuesday.
